SA Long distance O at Maretlwane. Weather complete opposite to yesterday, cool, overcast and about 20 degrees. So enjoyed my run and much better focus today. Had 1st start at 9am, so on my own and no one to try and catch. Really enjoyed the short sharp control sequence from #5 to #12 between the cliffs and rivers. Was slightly off approaching #6 but realised as soon as I hit the open rock. Also investigated an adjacent boulder at #8, but quickly corrected. Biggest time lost was at #18, where I should have contoured a little more between 17 and 18 instead of straight up and over the hill (probably about 30s). Also overshot 18 and had to backtrack (another 30s). Apart form that a clean run and very happy with how it went. Legs felt strong and good focus on map contact and direction all the way around. 2nd place behind Brad by only 20 odd seconds!

SA O Champs at Maretlwane. Frikken hot afternoon! Wasn't quite prepared for mid-30's. I really love this type of rocky bushveld terrain, but today was a bit of a shocker for me! Two big mistakes at #2 and #8. Was too far west heading up the hill to #2 and got drawn by another (un-mapped) quite distinctive rocky ground. At least 4 minutes lost here. All good from #3 to #7, then another 5 minutes lost at #8. Something weird going on with the map around here, paths and vegetation not adding up to what I was expecting, which completely threw me. Also lost focus too, as the heat was getting to me and my mouth was bone dry. 4th place in the end behind Nic, Mark C and Alex. No GPS track, as I didn't know if GPS watches were allowed.
