Walking 40:00 [1]

Brisk walk - same as yesterday. Hip OK while walking but stiffens up later.

Walking 1:30:00 [1]

Nice hike around the property of a landowner on the Carp Ridge. Once he knew what orienteering was all about, he gave me the grand tour of his 200+ acre property. Very nice when things work out like that.

Walking 30:00 [1]

Brisk walk to VM Park -one Mount Mooney. Very tired in the evening.

Saturday Oct 27, 2012 #

Note

40 minute walk and then a good stretch with a very tight hip. Masseur killed me yesterday but I trust I can loosen up over the next couple of days. Fair bit of walking in the past week but no running. Will set up the bike trainer for the expected bad weather until Tuesday.

Wednesday Oct 24, 2012 #

Note

A long hike with Bill M to look at new areas around Lac Philippe. No big discoveries - the current west edge of the map can only be extended a bit before hitting the thick woods. Will look at the NE corner and SW end another time.
Still feeling a little tired after the hectic but fun week-end at the NAOC's. Leg is good - hip is cranky. Will sleep well tonight I think.

Orienteering race 19:15 [3]

Leg was feeling OK so I set a goal of a slow jog for the whole race. Was able to accomplish that except for a couple of short hills in the middle. I think I had the slowest run in the finish shute but I moved up several places in the standings. The race atmosphere was fabulous with the great turnout and DVOA arena. The FC and senior relays were superb fun for all. So happy for Jennie to be involved with the Nat. team.

Orienteering race 1:14:00 [3]

Took a painkiller and actually jogged a bit for the first few controls. Felt much more confident with my prescription glasses too. Maybe the forced exercise from the previous day was helping my leg recover! Anyway, my focus was good for most of the race. The only big mistake was my route choice on the long second-to-last leg where I should have kept to the road.
Sort of jogged in the finish shute. Happy to be back in the middle of the pack.

Orienteering race 1:03:00 [2]

Horrible race except for one thing - I survived. The leg was feeling so bad all week I expected that I would have to bail out back to the finish or stop often. As it turned out, I was able to move OK and without too many distractions from the hip. I don't like taking painkillers when I am competing but Advil kept me going. Never got into any kind of focus and made some really big errors. I also realized that rainy/foggy 2.5 readers are not going to work any more. Futher investiagtion later confirmed that even in dry conditions I need to use my prescription glasses to read the fine detail.

Note

Slept OK but was awakened several times with aches. Topped up with advil during the night. Tried a 15 minute walk this evening. Was very stiff during the walk and was sore afterwards. Even the glutes are aching - and I haven't done much. Will have to investigate why this all happened after 3 successful earlier injections.

Saturday Oct 13, 2012 #

Note

What a night - virtually no sleep. Gloria went to the pharmacy in the morning to get fresh drugs and stomach relief pills. Switched to max. dosage Advil and by noon was able to uncomfortably move around.
All mapping/orienteering planss are on hold until this settles down.
Maybe a short walk at Nakkertok tomorrow to plot the new sprint loops.

Friday Oct 12, 2012 #

Note

Took it easy as I was scheduled for an injection in the hip in the afternoon.
The hospital process went well but by supper my whole upper leg started to ache. By 10 I was in unrelenting pain. Aleve didn't help so I switched to Tylenol which provided only a little releif even with an "overdose". By 2 in the morning I was ready for the hospital and some prescription drugs. Another Tylenol and ice packs provided some relief but now my stomach was realy upset too. I can't remember being in so much pain!

Thursday Oct 11, 2012 #

Note

Still feeling like a cold is waiting to break out. Didn't sleep well last night.
Spent most of the day catching up on fieldwork and base mapping.

Stretch & Strength 40:00 [1]

Woke up with a sore throat and feeling like a cold was about to start. OD'd on vitamins and Cold FX. Felt better as day went on but only went for a walk and then stretch. Dreary day anyway.

Walking 3:30:00 [1]

detailed exploration to the north west on the Narroway property on the ridge. Not a lot of good woods or detail. Plotted two long trails and defined all the lake and marshes - many larger than the base shows as Mr. beaver has been really busy.

Orienteering race 48:52 [4]

Long course. Nominally only 4K and not too hilly but some of the rocky terrain was slow for everybody. Only 2 one minute blunders. One becasue I didn't recognize a feaure on the map and turned away from what was a perfect compass line. Fortunately there were some good clear features to recover by. The other was again a needless rush without a plan. I had caught Gord and Dave and was pulling away over the next couple of controls by taking good bearings from solid attack points. Then my brain went dead on the way to number 11 and I ended up in some real crappy, rocky forest way to the right of my intended line. Smacked my shin really hard on a log and that took 30 seconds to shake off. Having taken the lead I should have used the safe but longer trail-based option. Anyway, I still beat them into the finish - even with having to walk a bit on the last easy leb.

Orienteering race 42:00 [3]

Ontario Champs middle event. Started OK but then the bottom fell out when I tried to beeline it without a good attack point on number 3.
Contunued to fall apart on 7 & 8 as I tried to be too clever. On 8, I didn't take a good first bearing and turned onto the wrong foot path. Musta cost me 3-4 minutes on that leg alone.

Orienteering race 16:25 [3]

Sprint at U of Waterloo. Fun run on the wrong course. The program and bib said course 2. So that's what I took. The other 65's did course 3.
Ah well, I probably wouldn't have won anyway because I fell for their biggest trap between the residence buildings. Probably a minute mistake on a 15 minute course.
Leg was a bit sore but I didn't stretch it out until the finish shute. Slept OK.

Cycling 1:00:00 [1]

Great day for a quick ride downtown and back along the canal. No hip or leg issues, but I did take it pretty easy. Lots of other cyclists and joggers.

Wednesday Oct 3, 2012 #

Running 40:00 [3]

Run to VM park with several waking breaks. Legs sore from all the walking yesterday but they loosened up after a while.

Walking 3:00:00 [1]

Beautiful hike on the Carp Ridge looking for a route to Spreckley's Trails.
Hip felt fine, but it was a pretty easy walk with lots of stops.
