Sandy's wonderful ROGAINE. Much more tomorrow. Essentially had enough physical energy for the event, but after 4 hours began to navigate very, very poorly. RouteGadget will confirm - in fact, I can't wait to see where the hell I was two or three times.
OK - here's the summary:
Thanks to my magic GPS watch, I now know where I was for six hours on Sunday. Hopefully I'll read this before my next ROGAINE. My knotted string/planning called for an overly optimistic 18km of orienteering (crow-flies) and a pace of about 22-25 mph. I intentionally started with conservative controls (wanting navigational success) and a relaxed pace. The following controls went as planned: 31, 65, 58, 37, 45, 63 (left control 60d off – no big deal) and 80 (by far prettiest control, near waterfall). Did not find 34 after a long side-hill/up-hill scramble and then did OK with 51, 67, 59, 72 and 77. The uphill to 77 necessitated switchbacks, resting, near-cramping – and was likely not the best approach as it took me over 30 min. (60 min.per km! - really!). OK to 35, 75. Missed 33 somehow (within 50 meters). OK with 46, 76, 61, 74, 32 (sloppy), 70, 42, and 68. Now begins the zombie troubles. Navigated through a 250m swamp to a road and 55. Then, wishing only to get to Milford Road – 150 m away to the NW (really needed to be on a road, a road, a road), I inexplicably let vegetation force me NE FOR A KILOMETER, and may have thrown in a brief 180 there. I was hopefully listening for the sound of a car when I was within 100 m of 49. FINALLY found the road with enough time to get 73. Left 73 and allowed vegetation to force me far left – E – into briars. Eventually reached the road AND TURNED THE WRONG WAY on it for 50 meters or so. So, counting the two I missed, nearly, and the three controls I had to skip because of zombie-state, I left 229 points on the table.
Food for thought: 1 – I need more leg protection than compression socks and thin tights. Look into gaiters; 2 – need to shorten string with knots next time if woods are similar; 3 – do not overrule my compass, ever; 4 – do not let vegetation force me too much off bearings; and, 5 – do this whenever I get the chance to be part of such a terrific event.
