Felt like a complete beginner again. And when I got misplaced near number 5 I even thought about giving up and retiring. Even though I was never that far from the flag. Inexperience. Found it really hard judging distance and scale. Lack of practice. I'll chalk this down as a success as I got round without physical problems, but my eyes are clearly a handicap and I'm never getting back to what I was (which wasn't much anyway). Mistakes (at 1 and 5) probably only totalled about 6 mins, but I was happy to walk for hills, marsh, tussocks and uncertainty as to precise location, and result was disappointing. I've long had a problem with vision and terrain running, but now I'm finding it hard to read the map as well at any speed, and today the light was fine. Missed the obvious paths to 2 and 5 and lost all fight in the wet tussocks near 9 and 10. And when you're not having a particularly good time all the other O frustrations like mud, cold and lack of atmosphere seem almost overpowering. On to Chichester - see how that goes.
