Orienteering race (Ash Ranges) 1:19:37 [4] *** 8.3 km (9:36 / km) +210m 8:31 / km
spiked:9/16c slept:5.5 weight:72kg

Heather 1 Thraws 0 I reckon. Nav was generally ok, and I was able to get a jog on along paths or where the running was good. But quite a few legs meant you had to take on the heather and, once in it, I lost all attack, urgency and enthusiasm. And sense of direction sometimes too. Despite overshooting 1 as I struggled to decode the contours I was pretty good through 5. Back was ok just, but I had a muzzy head from last nights party and a lack of sleep. 6 was in the open but I could see the track was the only sensible way to get near it. As soon as I left it I was floundering, and 7 was the same. And this time I passed the flag to the left and had to relocate. 8 and 11 were the long route choice legs. I changed my plan a bit at the end of 8 but it was ok; I couldn't bother being clever for 11 and just picked up the big track to run hard on. Legs and back complained a bit. 15 and 16 (last two) were straight through the heather or round the paths the long way. I'd sort of had enough. I went 'round', wishing I hadn't. That 900 metres straight took 10.5 minutes. I enjoyed the run, but my orienteering appetite has deserted me for the time being.
Edit: according to Winsplits I made up 11 places on the people around me on the two long legs. I was running ok on the paths, but letting myself down badly in terrain (where I could hardly be bothered).

Note

Just as I start to think I might retire from endurance events, guess who wins the club place in the London Marathon draw? It's the last weekend in April so I've got 18 weeks to prepare. I'd been thinking about another 10k and the fun run league 5 milers, not to mention the Corp Chally, but now I'm going to have to focus on building up the distance without buggering my back. So no racing this spring, I reckon. And will I want to do 15-20 miles off road at weekends and orienteer as well? Doubt it? Gotta love the London though. Fifth time for me.
