Tuesday Nov 30

Cross training (exercise bike) 50:00 [3]
Not motivated to do much but the exercise bike. One recumbant was in use and the slob had his newspapers all over the other, so I used an upright. I feel like I'm falling off the seat. Read an entire magazine, Fitness; can't recommend it. Lots of pablum.
Weights 15:00 [3]
Nautilus for legs; 5 lb barbells for arms.

Sunday Nov 28

Woods run 1:02:11 [3]
Great Falls, MD. Took the map with me this time, since Nadim wanted to have a map & we dug up two. Even with the magnifier, it was hard to read all the small details. Ran my baby toe into the hamper this morning and I really injured it, still hurt for the run (worst on uphills and on trails). I'm sure it will be fine by next weekend.
Beautiful weather, 50s, but breezy. Felt pretty good, at least somewhat strong going uphill. Just the toe hurt plus the usual hamstring aching.

Saturday Nov 27

Trail 1:11:20 [3]
Greenway Trail in Seneca Creek St. Park, starting at Berryville Rd & heading north. Nadim & I ran separately at our own paces. The trail generally follows the creek, and the portion we did was mostly flat -- floodplain, fields, and woods. Some easy hills further north. The woods looked pretty nice, like the nicer areas of Little Bennett. Perhaps useable for a SSS. Really pretty. Enjoyable run. Felt my hamstring but otherwise felt okay.

Friday Nov 26

Cross training 45:10 [3]
Recumbent exercise bike at work. Better than nothing, and warm & dry.
Weights 15:00 [3]
Legs -- Nautilus; arms -- 5 lb barbells. I am weak. So what. At least I'm doing something.

Thursday Nov 25

Road run 48:50 [3]
We skipped out on running the local Turkey Chase 10K -- didn't register on time to get the reasonable rate, didn't feel like spending $30 on race day and not really feeling all that "pigg" for a road race anyway. But since the temps are forecast to go down through the day and the race passes just 2 blocks from our house, we got up & dressed -- overdressed in full rain gear as it was raining steadily when we were about to leave -- and ran part of the course backwards, cheering on all the runners including our friend Bob. Then we cut through some neighborhoods to catch the last mile + of the race, yelling out people's places as we passed them (Nadim) and women's places (me) until we got overwhelmed, around the same time we saw Bob again. Then shortcutted back through the neighborhoods & home (crossing the course and passing the laggards). Rain stopped, sun peaked out once or twice, humid still but pleasant temps (nearly 60), windy. This was much more fun than running the race, and cheaper too. And we didn't have to figure out what to do with the ugly tee shirt.

Sunday Nov 21

Road run 38:20 [3]
Easy run to shake out my Stumble muscles. Through East Bethesda to the Georgetown Branch trail east to Jones Bridge & back. Around 60, overcast. Felt okay, just a little lethargic.

Saturday Nov 20

Event: Susquehanna Stumble

Road run 10:00 [3]
Warm up before SS, on road back & forth to bathroom (twice).
Orienteering 3:59:56 [4] 17.23 km (13:56 / km)
7th Susquehanna Stumble, Elk Neck St. Park, MD. Felt kind of raw along the river, overcast & coolish, so I overdressed & was regretting it already on the way to the first control. Adjusted after the first loop (100+ min in). Started out with a window. Already falling behind Angelica, but I figure she's running the Short (first loop only), while I need to pace myself for the second, longer loop. Not too clean, with several smallish bobbles, but running okay (given my training level, aches & pains, & lack of enthusiasm for a hard race). The second loop again began with a window, on the other end of the map. Long time just in getting there. The field -- the obvious "easy" route between controls M & L -- was filled with pricker bushes that were not always easy to avoid. Lots of thorn pricks on my legs. Saw no one on the second loop until the last window, coming up to Q. Tim Good & Mark Cornish were coming down to it, but it was their 3rd of the 4 controls in the window, while it was my 1st. Lost some time on my last control in the window but Tim & Mark lost even more time on the same control (P) and I got ahead of them. But I had a huge error in the downfall area around #30 and we ended up finding it together. Only 3 controls left, but I proved to have the most energy left, finishing ahead of both of them (and beating Ted, Dave O, and Nadim on the run-in!! that NEVER happens!!). My longest Stumble yet; very physical but I found it interesting & enjoyable. Thanks to Randy and the SVO crew.

Thursday Nov 18

Trail 42:03 [3]
Heritage Trail along the river from work. The trail from the bridge is getting indistinct, and there's a big log across it ... wonder if I'm the only person who ever uses it? It's hard these days to get excited about running, when so many body parts hurt: left big toe, right foot, left shin, right hamstring ... I've been ignoring the toe, thinking perhaps I was imagining it, but it's getting worse and definitely isn't right. Noticed it most going uphill. I was doing a work out where I pushed on the uphills, normal on everything else. Though it's a hilly route there's way more flat/downhill.
On the bright side, the woods looked beautiful.
Trail 8:26 [4]
Uphills on the Heritage Trail.

Wednesday Nov 17

Cross training 41:30 [3]
Just didn't feel like running, with various aches bothering me. Instead, I enjoyed a pleasant ride on the recumbent exercise bike at the gym while reading "more" (apparently a mag for women over 40 ... who knew?).
Weights 15:00 [2]
Legs on the Nautilus machines + arms with light dumbbells.

Tuesday Nov 16

Road run 43:57 [3]
From home through Battery Park to Glenwood Ave through Edgemoor back through Battery Park & Glenwood to the NIH trail back to Wisconsin. Felt my toe & foot & the pavement aggrevates my shin (which isn't too bad -- yet). Pleasant weather; hate how early it gets dark though!

Sunday Nov 14

Orienteering 53:06 [4] 4.6 mi (11:32 / mi)
Mid-Atlantic Champs, Hammonds Rocks, PA, Green course. Wobbly on #1 and lost a few min on #2 from carelessness, then settled in okay. Just tired in the blueberry & uphills -- hard to run with the limited training I've been doing. Various little aches, too -- feet mostly. Beautiful weather, at least compared to last year's M-As: mostly clear, pushing 50, but breezy. Good for running. 4th on Green behind 3 DVOAers.
Orienteering 33:15 [5] 3.7 mi (8:59 / mi)
Mid-Atlantic Champs Relay. Ran on QOC's #1 team with Nadim leading off (he finished first, just ahead of Randy Hall) and Jon Torrance going second (he came in with a 1 1/2 min lead over Clem McGrath). Jon's theory was to give me a big lead and hope I could hold off DVOA by 5 or more minutes (teams with no women got a 5-min penalty; DVOA's #1 team was all male). But Wyatt caught me before #1 as I overran it (going as fast as I could and not navigating well enough :-( ). But I kept pushing, hoping no one else would catch me. Finished about 2 1/2 min too late for us to win, but we held on for 2nd. Pretty fun. Thanks to SVO for a classy event, complete with e-punching. :-)
Road run 5:00 [3]
Warm up to start of Mid-Atlantics w/ Nadim. I was started almost immediately after I arrived, which I wasn't really mentally prepared for. Oh well.
Road run 5:00 [3]
Warm-up for the Relay w/ Nadim & Scott P.

Friday Nov 12

Cross training 30:22 [2]
Elliptical trainer, at the gym at work before a cafeteria breakfast and a day of Quilt Questing.

Thursday Nov 11

Trail 41:41 [3]
Rock Creek Park. After a nice holiday, spent with an architect & cleaning the bathroom (not simultaneously), we drove to the park & went on our separate runs. Nadim ran home & I drove back. Nice trails, fairly hilly. The woods looked beautiful. It was getting a bit late in the day (the architect thing took longer than expected but was worthwhile), so it started getting kind of dim in the woods. Pleasant, about 50+. Felt okay, not great but no bad aches.

Wednesday Nov 10

Road run 1:01:26 [3]
Nice day. First run in a while. Felt good to get out. NIH trail to Glenwood/Grant Ave, Sonoma, Old G'town Rd to the YMCA, through Alta Vista/Maplewood, back along NIH on Wisconsin.

Sunday Nov 7

Orienteering 2:05:00 [3] 9.26 km (13:30 / km)
QOC Blue course, Broadcreek. Not feeling all that energetic or excited about going for a long hilly o' run. Started out slow, sped up a bit but didn't go too hard. Woods varied from beautiful open deciduous to pleasant pines to quite unpleasant fields of thorns. A trail or two was just about gone. A couple long route-choice legs were fun. Beautiful day, around 70+, felt hot. Enjoying it while it lasts.

Blue - Splits

Tuesday Nov 2

Road run 35:47 [3]
Didn't think I'd run today, figuring the voting process would take a long time, especially after hearing the stories from my co-workers who voted before work. But I hit a good time, just after 4, and the entire process, including walking the two+ blocks there and back, took less than 25 minutes. A gorgeous day, still with light left, so I figured, go do a short run. East Bethesda streets to Georgetown Branch Trail to Chevy Chase streets & back. Feeling a bit out of shape, not surprisingly. Butt hurt from the bruise I sustained in my bike fall on Sunday. :-(
