Saturday Dec 31

Road run (Paved bike trail) 54:16 [3] 6.0 mi (9:02 / mi)
The usual Saturday run. Only Nadim, Leo, and I showed up. That's okay with me since I usually run alone anyway. And Nadim got to have some company with Leo for most of his run.
Wanted to run easy, but having the quarter miles marked off makes me check my time and get competitive with myself. So, as always, it got a bit harder than I planned, especially the last mile/half mile, which was a level 4 effort.
Splits: 9:28, 9:19, 9:00, 8:57, 8:52, 8:39
Stretching 8:00 [2]
After running, using the exercise equipment as a help and motivation, while waiting for Nadim to finish his run. Felt good to stretch. (I usually do after the Saturday runs but don't usually log it.)

Friday Dec 30

Orienteering (Line o) 1:12:24 [2] ***
shoes: VJ Integrator
We had a 3-hour early release (thank you, taxpayers!) so I went to Great Falls, MD and did a big hunk of the line-o that Nadim set up last month. The woods were very open (saw many deer, or the same pair over and over, and a small furry fox) and runable, but I was going easy on purpose. I haven't been in the woods in a while and I could tell, though I did keep running, even uphill, almost all the time. Was mostly very close to the line, just off in a couple places when I relied too much on the completely out-of-date vegetation. Easy to relocate though.
The AA gave me a painful blister on my left heel. I don't know why I can't remember that and do some preventive medicine.
Around 45, partly cloudy but mostly the sun was behind a cloud or two. Felt fine running.
Trail warm up/down 14:04 [3] ***
When I hit a trail near the logical end of the line o (before it headed over to Bear Island), I decided to take the trails back. Heel was sore, I was losing motivation, etc. Actually did pick up the pace on the trail and felt good, except for uphills (where my shoe rubbed against my heel a lot).
Helped some hikers find the way back to the Tavern. (They said, "Do you know the way back?" as if I knew where they had come from ...)

Thursday Dec 29

Nordic Track 41:41 [3]
Brought my stuff to work today planning to either work out in the gym or, if the rain stopped, going for a run outdoors. But all afternoon I was feeling worse, headache again, and feverish. Came home and took a nap (well, kind of, had Judge Judy on and that was distracting), and felt well enough after that to suit up and sweat in the basement. Big pile of magazines to choose from, as several were delivered while we were gone. Went with OnEarth.

I'm pretty motivated to train these days, reading other people's logs and finally having no painful body parts (not sure of that, haven't run enough to know for certain), but then this stupid cold I have had since we got back to the States has left me feeling too crappy to do much. I think I'm just about over it though. I'm just really happy I felt okay in Russia!

Tuesday Dec 27

Road run 36:18 [3]
St. Paul, MN. Finally had our clothes, finally not busy, finally I had no excuse. Still feeling a bit sick but I love running along the river and this was my last chance, so I went with it. Ran south along the Miss. Riv. Blvd. as far as the Ford Bridge, then while Nadim headed into Minneapolis, I turned around and ran north as far as the statue at Summit Avenue. Back by way of lovely Woodlawn, as always wishing I could live in one of those beautiful houses.
A bit cooler than it had been, but still quite mild by Minnesota winter standards. Felt pretty good except for some breathing issues due to my cold.

Saturday Dec 24

Hiking (shopping) 1:30:00 [1]
Well, people seem to expect me to log this, so here it is. Actually we were shopping for over 2 hours and much of it was actually walking, powering through the crowds, looking for stores that might hold something worth buying. At the Mall of America, about 5 miles from my parents' house. Not much else to do without our luggage!

Thursday Dec 22

Cross training (exercise bike) 39:09 [3]
In the morning at the Fitness Center at the Petro Palace, before a long day of traveling. Nadim opted to run outside but I was feeling wimpy and didn't feel like running in the dark on the ice & chill, so went downstairs instead. Finished off E Magazine.

Tuesday Dec 20

Road run 53:02 [3]
In Sortavala, Russia. After our morning visit with Sergeiy, while he was having lunch and napping, we had a couple hours (during daylight hours!) free, and when Nadim suggested a run, I had no excuse. ;-)
We had a really enjoyable run around town -- the best way to see any place, of course -- and up in the hill on the edge of downtown, with gorgeous views of the town and the fresh snow on the trees. A shortcut through a field indicated there was about 2 feet of snow. Much more than St. Petersburg.
Very pleasant run.

Sunday Dec 18

Cross training (elliptical trainer) 35:46 [3]
Back in the Fitness Center, because it snowed all night (probably only 1-2" of fresh snow) and i, with plans of walking around outside, decided I'd rather not get cold & wet twice. Yeah , a bit of a wimp, but Nadim followed along. :-) Continued to read E. Mag.
Lots of walking all weekend. After today, we'll be in Sortavala, with probably very limited training opportunities -- maybe a run, in the dark? Or, situps in the hotel.
C • Update 3

Saturday Dec 17

Road run 47:50 [3] 4.5 mi (10:37 / mi)
Tour of downtown St. Petersburg, in the morning. Officially before sunrise (10:15 these days!) but plenty light at 9:30. Nadim and i ran from our hotel through a park across from the Hermitage, across a bridge, down along the icy Neva River, across another bridge and yet another to SS Peter & Paul Fortress; through the fortress grounds, across a couple more bridges back to the south side of the Neva, past the Church on the Spilled Blood and the Palace Square, and back. (More details in Nadim's log.) Nadim, bored at going my slow pace, took lots of pictures and videos.

Friday Dec 16

Cross training (exercise bike) 32:24 [3]
In the Fitness Center of the Petro Palace Hotel, St. Petersburg, Russia. We discovered lastt night that the Fitness Center is free only between 7 am & 11 am. I had planned on using the center, and today, with a day of medical exams scheduled, it made sense to get that done early. We didn't get picked up until 10 so we had plenty of time. Read E Magazine.
Cross training (elliptical trainer) 12:05 [3]
In the Fitness Center. Still reading.

Tuesday Dec 13

Nordic Track 34:12 [3]
Schedule for tonight: pack, track, pack. :-)
Brought the latest Track & Field News downstairs to the Nordic Track since all my other good mags were already packed for the trip. Motivating to read about elite runners while tracking. Glad I had enough time to fit in some exercise. It's a great stress relief.
Almost ready to go! Getting excited. New video arrived today; little Sergeiy is crawling up a storm and trying to walk. He'll be doing the White course before we know it. :-)

Monday Dec 12

Nordic Track 40:00 [3]
Really had to do something. All this list-crossing-off activity is pretty sedate and, besides, I need a little stress relief. Not that I'm stressed ...
So it felt good to do something. Finished off Nature Conservancy and I had to read all the junk I usually skip because I didn't have another magazine with me and I didn't want to run all over the house to get another one.

Sunday Dec 11

Note
Too busy crossing off things on my to-do list to fit a workout in.

If I crossed things off vigorously, can I log it?

Saturday Dec 10

Road run 57:30 [3] 6.1 mi (9:24 / mi)
Capital Crescent Trail. We figured the Rock Creek Trail would be worse after the snow/rain/freezing rain/melting/freezing so we ran on the CC trail instead. Mostly covered with frozen footprints & tire tracks but not too bad. Every once in a while there'd be 5 or 10' of dry pavement. Ran with Nadim for just over 1 1/2 miles then he sped up. I ran on the trail just to the far end of the tunnel and then back to the junction with Little Falls trail & took that. The trail dies out at Mass Ave but I didn't realize that; ended up running a tiny bit on a short dirt (snow-covered, untrampled) trail, then the shoulder of the somewhat busy road, and then on the snow-covered grass, and finally on the shoulder again. The snow-covered grass, uphill, was hard work and I could feel it in my glutes & hams. Was breathing hard when I had to stop for the light at River. When I got to Dorset I got back on the Capital Crescent trail for the last 1/2 mile or so. Nadim passed me just as I was approaching the parking lot.
Chilly morning but bright and rather fun for running. Saw a lot more dog walkers than runners.
Mile splits for first two miles: 9:09, 9:01
C • Little Falls Trail 1

Friday Dec 9

Nordic Track 40:07 [3]
Another day with work (delayed arrival! Yay! I took advantage of that for the first time so I could get some stuff done at home), left an hour early (after discovering, to my shock, that I am in a use-or-lose situation for the first time ever :-), ran some errands, and home to do more stuff. Fit in a little bit of sweating in between the stuff.
Started the latest Nature Conservancy.
Ankle hurts.

Wednesday Dec 7

Nordic Track 34:27 [3]
After a long (well, normal length) day at work, interrupted by driving downtown to pick up a check from Nadim and then to the Russian Embassy to deliver our visa applications, and some errand running (picking up stuff for gifts & the trip), I made myself do some Nordic Tracking. Been busy and a bit lazy the past few days so I needed to do *something*. Felt good to do something. Finished Utne.
Sunday I skipped the o' meet -- resting my ankle and doing a bunch of sewing (gift bags for the orphanage workers & others) -- Monday was a waiting parents' meeting; Tuesday was massage. Ahhhh. No excuses today.

Sunday Dec 4

Event: Possum Trot IX

Saturday Dec 3

Road run (Paved bikepath) 51:09 [3] 6.0 mi (8:31 / mi)
The usual Saturday morning run with MCRRC. I thought we got there right on time but all the regulars were nowhere in sight. We ended up passing them all. Nadim's usual group of guys arrived just after we did, so we all started out together, but Leo is coming back from injury and was running very slowly -- so the others did, too. I was able to run with them and then get ahead of them. Nadim stayed with me until mile 2, then he went ahead, planning to run 8 miles to my 6, and see if he could catch me at the end (he didn't). After another quarter mile or so, I passed Hinda and Rosanne, and Rosanne sped up to run with me. So I had company most of the run today, which helps me maintain the pace. Rosanne was a bit slower than Nadim so the pace slowed somewhat. Still a decent pace for me, and I was talking most of the time so it wasn't difficult. Yay, it's nice to feel good at 8:30 pace again!
Splits: 8:44, 8:23, 8:26, 8:36. 8:35, 8:26
Brisk, around 27, sunny.

Friday Dec 2

Nordic Track 36:50 [3]
In the morning, before work. My ankle is definitely sore so I figured tracking would be better, with the ability to stop whenever I needed to. It hurt oddly for the first 9 min or so but I couldn't wimp out after only 9 min. Got better after that.
Read Utne. Way behind on my magazine reading.
