Orienteering 53:18 [4]4.5 km (11:51 / km) +145m 10:12 / km
spiked:8/13c
Flying Pig Sprint, Woodland Trails, Ohio. Hot, thick woods. Thrown off by the rough open areas with juniper (despite reading about them in the notes) because it was very hard to read the vegetation on the map -- such areas were supposed to be rough open yellow with green dots, but the green was impossible for me to see in the dim light of the forest. The map was a bit funny in places in addition to the vegetation, and rather thorny. And did I mention it was hot? Upper 70s, perhaps 80s -- not at all ready for that yet given that just two days before it was 48 & rainy. Made a boneheaded error near the end that cost me 5 minutes. Ack. Nadim won M40 in 46 min; Eric B & Cherie M were 49; Dan M 50; Sharon 55.

Red - Splits

Thursday Apr 15

Road run 36:46 [3]
Early in the morning (c. 5:15) before work, as we were heading for the airport right after work. I felt like I didn't do much training this week and didn't want yet another blank day in my log. Ran on the streets of Edgemoor. Kind of dark, but felt extremely safe. Nice way to start my 45th year. (Ack.)

Tuesday Apr 13

Road run 49:03 [3]
Bethesda streets in light rain & 50 degrees. Through ritzy Edgemoor to Radnor Ave, through Kenwood (the other place in DC to see cherry blossoms, though these are past their peak), and back through Edgemoor. Stopped at library on the way home to pick up tax stuff. Felt okay, a little tired.

Saturday Apr 10

Road run 35:00 [3]
Warmup (from TGIFridays to the loop on the 8k course & around) before the race and cool-down with Melissa, once around the loop (backwards). Felt okay, even though foot has been bothering me.
Road run 39:00 [4]4.96 mi (7:51 / mi)
PGRC's Springburst 8km race, Greenbelt Park. I hadn't run this race since my first year in the club, probably 1990 or 1991. After that I wised up and worked the finish most years (or otherwise volunteered) and got to skip out on this race, which is deceptively hard. It's "rolling" and two loops. The weather was good, around 55, cloudy, and calm. I took it easy and ran what I thought I could maintain. Kept momentum on the hills -- caught the last woman I passed as she walked up the last big hill. My time was much slower than my one previous time (I remember 34 but more likely 35 & change) but I'm okay with it. Mile splits: 7:33 (mostly downhill), 8:12 (mostly uphilll), 7:36 (mostly downhill), 8:07 (first half downhill, second half uphill), 7:33 for last 0.96 miles (first half uphill, second half downhill). Foot hurt before running; didn't bother me while running and felt better after. Go figure.
