Flying Pig, Red. Templeton Creek, Indiana. Later start today, so hotter. Runner's course, with several lengthy trail runs. Many common legs with Blue, 2-7 plus a couple common controls later. I lost my head at #5 & instead of heading uphill right below the control as I saw a Blue runner do, I inexplicably continued on until I hit a dry stream and I headed uphill and hit the elephant track, which happened to be just above some obvious rootstocks. Back to where I had been. D'oh! Had one other error on the long leg. Had a kid follow me most of the leg; I was thinking about that and how I should tell him there's no way he's on my course so he should try to navigate on his own, then I drifted right at the top of the hill. Caught by the yellow bits & I righted myself and found the control easily. The poor kid came up to the control and, realizing it wasn't his, just stood there with a stunned, scared look on his face. I went on. I'd planned on kind of yelling at him for following but I think his realization that he wasn't at his control and, apparently, had little idea where he was, was punishment enough. Woods were a bit thick & thorny in places, so I was glad for the trail options. Really wanted a clean run but I couldn't manage it. Also my nagging right foot hurt plus all the side-hill running the same direction gave me a blood blister under my big toe. Ouch. Nadim: 69; Katarina: 67; Eric B: 65; Cherie M: 85; Sharon: 91.

Flying Pig Farsta. Garr Boat Ramp, Indiana. Starting early turned out to be a good thing, as the temps were still reasonable (50s/60s; it got into the low 80s and was sunny later). Only 4 other women (Sharon, Katarina, Cherie, Svetlana). Saw Katarina coming out of #3 as I was going in, and saw Cherie, obviously on a different fork, early and then twice late. The first late time I must have been distracted by her as I drifted left & then misread the green & contours, losing about 2 minutes. Sloppy on the last loop in the flat green stuff. Most of the course went through very nice open woods but very hilly. Exhausting, and I definitely didn't make the best route choice to the first control. Finished 4 min behind Cherie, not unhappy about that though if I had been clean it would have been a tough fight at the end I think. Katarina DNF'd apparently after losing her punch card. Fun event. Thanks to Vlad for all his work.

Flying Pig Sprint, Woodland Trails, Ohio. Hot, thick woods. Thrown off by the rough open areas with juniper (despite reading about them in the notes) because it was very hard to read the vegetation on the map -- such areas were supposed to be rough open yellow with green dots, but the green was impossible for me to see in the dim light of the forest. The map was a bit funny in places in addition to the vegetation, and rather thorny. And did I mention it was hot? Upper 70s, perhaps 80s -- not at all ready for that yet given that just two days before it was 48 & rainy. Made a boneheaded error near the end that cost me 5 minutes. Ack. Nadim won M40 in 46 min; Eric B & Cherie M were 49; Dan M 50; Sharon 55.

Early in the morning (c. 5:15) before work, as we were heading for the airport right after work. I felt like I didn't do much training this week and didn't want yet another blank day in my log. Ran on the streets of Edgemoor. Kind of dark, but felt extremely safe. Nice way to start my 45th year. (Ack.)

Bethesda streets in light rain & 50 degrees. Through ritzy Edgemoor to Radnor Ave, through Kenwood (the other place in DC to see cherry blossoms, though these are past their peak), and back through Edgemoor. Stopped at library on the way home to pick up tax stuff. Felt okay, a little tired.
