Orienteering 1:03:54 [4]6.02 km (10:37 / km)
1000 Day Stampede, Plutonic Pleasures map. Started on a windswept hilltop. Mass start, mob orienteering. Started out slowly & slowly passed people but was still well back. Made some of the same errors as everyone else plus I went to #9 before #8 ... oops. Good thing it was just for fun.

Stampede - Splits

Thursday Jul 29

Hiking 21:00 [3]
Short but tough uphill hike from the Alpine Visitor's Center, Rocky Mtn NP. I could hardly complain since it was my idea, but it was cold & windy at the top (though the views were great). Lots of altitude.
Hiking 28:00 [2]
Somewhat longer hike from along the Trail Ridge Rd. But gentler, easier climb, and with cool rock things at the end. Liked this hike better.
Trail 58:37 [3]
Moraine trail in Rocky Mtn NP, with Nadim. It was hard mostly because of the altitude. We'd carefully chosen a route that didn't have much elevation change. It was a nice run, along a marsh & through some beautiful pine forests, plus through a campground. Knees a bit sore but not too bad.

Hiking 4:02:00 [3]8.4 mi (28:48 / mi)
Chasm Lake below Longs Peak, Rocky Mtn National Park. A not-too-intense hike 4.1 miles up to the lake just below Longs Peak. I wasn't about to hike up Longs. Very popular trail. We had lunch at the lake; unfortunately there was a nasty cold wind and it was cold when the sun was behind a cloud. Almost immediately as we headed back down the trail, it began to rain & hail. It rained lightly most of the rest of the hike. I pushed the pace because I was cold & I wanted to get off the mountain. Loved having the hiking poles (my first use of my xmas present); they propelled me forward! Both knees felt pretty shot by the end. Took hours to warm up.

Hiking 2:30:00 [3]
Royal Arch trail outside Boulder in the Flatirons. Just arrived in Colorado in the morning, so the altitude definitely affected us. Tough all up route first half; rough down route back. Rain hit when we reached the top.

Sunday Jul 25

Road run 30:34 [2]
East Bethesda streets to the Georgetown Branch Trail towards Bethesda. Turned around just after emerging from the tunnel, where the CCT crosses Bethesda Ave. Low 70s & light mist. Felt okay but a bit lethargic.

Orienteering 1:39:42 [2]
Great Falls, MD, Bear Island. I set up a starburst exercise for Nadim and me to do -- this would be a great place/exercise for a summer short series but we really need to keep low profile at G Falls, esp Bear Island (where they no longer let us orienteer even during the winter). I could almost literally throw darts at the map and have a decent course, so it took me less than 10 min to pick the controls & print out the map from my Illustrator file. Of course we were running later than we should have so we only had time to do 10 controls; first we each put out 5 (Nadim odd, me even) then we picked up each other's controls. We returned to the start after each control. The ponds were the most helpful feature: many were dry (obvious and runnable) and those that weren't were, of course, easy to see. As it got dusky I had real trouble reading the map and even seeing the features in the terrain, so we stopped after 10 controls. Took it easy physically; this was for some much-need map work. Not particularly relevant for Wyoming but just being on a map helps.
