Orienteering 2:25:40 [4]12.8 km (11:23 / km)
Possum Trot VIII, Camp Naish Scout Camp, KS. Site of my second-ever o' meet. I'm not sure I have orienteered here since then. I did a lot better this time. Mass start thankfully before the rain started, and I was doing okay at first, in a large group of guys, including Fritz & Charlie. But I wasn't able to hang on, whether due to my sore baby toe, the efforts of the previous day, or something else. I had neither the physical nor mental ability to keep with them. Lost the group on the way to #3; I thought I might see them again later (and I did, apparently, pass a bunch of guys during the race, but I only saw a few of them). The woods were actually pretty good, in some places downright pleasant, though the loose limestone was a bit scary at times. Had a few small errors and then about a 5 min boom when I was in the wrong reentrant looking, with two others, for a rock. They headed off just about the time an orienteer not doing the Trot yelled to me It's right behind you! Since I still thought I was right, I spent a long time looking on the hillside for the absent control, cursing like a sailor at the idiocy of the situation... before I finally realized where I was and then of course I was even madder! Oh well.
I skipped #22 & #23, out of 24 controls. There were several good skip pairs, but I had thought beforehand that it would be nice to skip late, both from a psychological and a physical point of view. Both Mikell and Michael made the same choice, so I feel like I did okay.
The rain started within the first hour but it was mostly light, only some times increasing in intensity, and the temps were okay. It was actually good running weather.
I managed to be 1st woman, winning the coveted dead possum, though I was nearly an hour behind Platt. My toe really hurt but the adrenaline of racing made it tolerable. In comparison, everything else felt fine.
Overall, a really fun race and a delightful weekend going back to my o' roots.

- Splits

Saturday Dec 4

Orienteering 39:46 [5]4.7 km (8:28 / km)
Kansas State O' Champs, Tall Oaks Conference Center, KS. Mass start of about 35-40 of us. There was one control we went to 4 times: at the beginning and at the end of each of three loops. People had the loops in different orders. I had the long loop first and was lapped by Mikell as I headed to #6. Ack! I then lost a couple minutes on #7 when I hit the stream too low but thought I might be too high. Otherwise it was a decent run. The woods weren't nearly as bad as I thought they'd be. Decades of remembering the unpleasantness of Kansas woods seemed mostly unwarrented. The other two loops were much shorter and kind of park-o' like; it was quite fun! I found myself at the last fast and I figured he'd beat me in, but I decided I'd make him work for it. He did pass me, beat me by about 3 seconds in the end, but he was surprised by how hard he had to run. (My run-in time was a second ahead of Nadim -- two meets in a row where I beat him on the run-in!! Unheard of ...). Felt the toe quite a bit but it didn't slow me down. Great weather, sunny and 50+. No warm up because my toe hurt too much.

Advanced - Splits

Thursday Dec 2

Trail 38:00 [3]
Through the woods at work to the Turkey Run trail back to work. I had taken separate splits for the various surfaces -- woods, trail, paved -- but had to delete them when I showed up at the line of the KS Champs without enough splits to capture them all. Oops. Not even sure of the total time, but this seems about right.
Wasn't terribly motivated but then I decided to run through the woods vice the Potomac trail (hilly...) and that was a good choice. The woods were beautiful, mostly, except for a patch of Kansas-like stuff. Nice day. Toe hurt but not too badly.

Tuesday Nov 30

Cross training (exercise bike) 50:00 [3]
Not motivated to do much but the exercise bike. One recumbant was in use and the slob had his newspapers all over the other, so I used an upright. I feel like I'm falling off the seat. Read an entire magazine, Fitness; can't recommend it. Lots of pablum.
Weights 15:00 [3]
Nautilus for legs; 5 lb barbells for arms.
