Orienteering race (Summer Short Series) 47:15 [4]*** 5.29 km (8:56 / km)
spiked:11/14c
Summer Short Series at Claude Moore Farm. A new area & map, and a new SSS host! All in all, a successful outing, with 8 participants (me, Nadim,
Dave O, Greg L, Tom, Michael W, Scott & Elise). Dave Pruden made the map, which Ted Good put into OCAD. It's not perfect of course but plenty fine for this event. The printing was not very good though, with the contours very light -- most of us had trouble seeing them -- and the light green showing up as light blue. Good route choice on the long legs, with all the trails to pick out and occasional out-of-bounds areas.

I started first (well, Scott & Elise, as near-beginners, went out several minutes earlier) and was passed by Dave, then Nadim, then Greg. Then I passed Scott & Elise on the trail. I got to #1 first. :-) Nadim re-caught me at 3; never saw Greg or Dave again (and I finished ahead of them). Tom caught me at 5, and I saw him off and on until nearly 10. He's a much faster runner but he was making some less-than-ideal route choices and was also having more trouble reading the map than I. I found the long, double streamers easy to find ... Dave had trouble, as he often does with streamers. Lost some time on 8 (which was 1, coming from the other direction), but otherwise was pretty clean. And I was running fairly well all things considered. Nothing really hurt while I was running, so that's good at least. It's just the aftermath. :-(

The park is nice, great for local events & sprint o's -- which this almost was. It's pretty flat (1.5 m contours!) except for the hill at the north end). Lots of ball fields, picnic grounds, nature center, a couple ponds, large network of trails. And the weather was perfect -- didn't even feel hot running.

I finished 2nd overall behind Nadim, a minute-plus ahead of Tom ... then Dave, then Greg. Always fun to beat the faster guys!

Aquajog 40:11 [2]
(injured)
Gave in to all the sore bits and figured this was all I can do without aggrevating something. Even so, my inside knee hurt.
I went slowly, mostly because of the knee hurting. I don't hate it but I certainly don't enjoy it and I avoid the pool whenever I can make an excuse to. But so much hurts when I run or bike or do yoga: left baby toe, left ankle, left hamstring (a bit), left wrist (why, I have no idea), top of right foot, inside of right knee ... wow, I'm really falling apart.
No core exercises yet. Just did a plank pose to show Nadim, but that hurts my wrist.

I smell like chlorine.

Note
I remembered that there was something downtown (Bethesda) that I was interested in going to -- a festival or something -- but couldn't remember what it was. I headed over anyway; we could hear announcing from the house but couldn't hear what they were saying. Turned out it was the Bethesda Grand Prix bike race(s), and I was in time to see the main event, though I had to wait about a half hour before it started. The course was 7/10 of a mile, around Woodmont Triangle (an area of downtown); the men's race did 60 laps. The crowd wasn't huge so I easily found a spot just past the start/finish and, though I kept thinking I didn't want to stand around watching the whole race for over an hour, I ended up doing just that. There was a nice breeze and I found just enough shade to keep my legs from frying.
A group of three riders made a successful breakaway less than halfway through, and with about 10 laps to go they lapped the field. From then on it was a bit hard to follow (except for the eventual 4th, 5th, and 6th place riders, who had an exciting finish). I think the field got confused, too, because they rang a bell for the top three when they had one lap to go, but after those three finished, the rest of the field slowed and, I thought, very few of them came the rest of the way around for their last lap and those that did looked like they were just jogging. Except for the 4-5-6 places. Anyway, I had already been thinking about going for a bike ride and this got me in the mood.
Biking 31:32 [2]4.17 mi (7:33 / mi)
Nadim had already gotten my bike ready to ride (thanks; I'm pretty incompetent). I just wanted to go for a very easy ride around the neighborhood. I'm still scared to death with the clipless pedals, and I always have to get re-accustomed to the brake locations & shifting. You'd think I just got this bike last week. I still hate the feeling of being locked on to my bike (at least that's what it feels like to me). It really isn't a system that's necessary for a recreational rider like me. At least I didn't fall.
Very short ride, very slow, just up and down the neighboring streets, looking at houses mostly.
