| Orienteering race 1:03:37 [4]**** 6.23 mi (10:13 / mi) +300m 5:31 / km | ||
| Day 2, Colorado 5 Days, at The New, New Blue Monutain. Red. Having run here a couple times before and enjoying it, I knew I'd like it better than yesterday and that helped get me out the door. I was too sloppy to #1 and was almost immediately confused ... but then I came across a distinct bare rock area, and I was more careful from there. But I still missed the control, coming right below it, looking in the correct reentrant (I think) but not seeing it. I went down the spur and saw the green & rocks at the end (other side) and crawled back up. Chastened, I was more careful to #2, but still missed it a bit. Was low, thought I knew what spur I was climbing despite the bare rock I didn't see on my spur ... went up the spur and things didn't match up. Luckily I saw the powerline and that confirmed that I was off by a spur. The bare rock was on the map, I just was not where I thought I was.
The rest of the course went pretty well, just slow because I was too tired to run much; uphills just a grind (even on a trail). Much happier than yesterday.

| Orienteering race 1:38:30 [4]**** 6.7 km (14:42 / km) | ||
| Buena Vista map, Day 1 of the Colorado 5 Day. Rained most of the way out to the meet site, a high field with a view of the 14ers to the west. Rain was likely, and it was chilly. I was kind of distracted from the start by non-relevant stuff, and concerned about the first control (clearing). Sure enough, I missed it and had to come back, meeting Joe B. spiking it ... he reminded me that the map is 1:10, which I knew. Turned off brain and followed behind Joe (not visible for long) then turned up a reentrant when I misinterpreted the reentrant I was in -- ending up on the hill with controls 5-8 instead of the further one with 2-3. Even came across #s6 & 7, saw the codes, and didn't realize what they were. Nadim came along and I asked him if he was going to 2 ... he was, but he was almost as confused as I was. Eventually Peter G. came by, going to 6 or 7, and he told Nadim he was on the wrong hill. Nadim told me and, though I was not believing it at first, I followed along and found the control. Fritz met me at 2. I saw him on and off the rest of the course.
Twisted my right ankle on the way to 5, hurting the side of my Achilles, rather painful. Made a weird 180 type error out of 5, misreading and misinterpreting what I was doing. Leaving 8 I drifted too far left and made a parallel error going up the wrong reentrant -- passed near 1 and when I saw some rocks on a spur, I immediately figured out what I'd done. Added lots of distance. 10 was a bit tricky and annoying but I didn't lose as much time as some people. The "saddle" wasn't too bad -- got close and looked right and saw it. Crazy. Leaving there, I was right on but then I second-guessed myself and decided I was one spur over. So I went off line and found a control on a big boulder I couldn't find on the map where I thought I was. But the huge cliff behind me got me back on track. Back to the spur I'd been on, and then on to the next, with Angelica and Fritz coming in as I was leaving. The rest were a bit shakey; lost a couple minutes on the penultimate when I was walking up the reentrant just looking at my feet so I didn't see the control up the hillside. Not happy with my run and very tired, and ankle sore, so I mostly walked in to the last control and the finish. The rain started somewhere along the line and it was quite cold -- at one point I said, aloud, "I'm freezing!". Took a long time before I warmed up.

| Event: Colorado Five-Day | ||
| Orienteering race (Sprint) 20:48 [5]**** 2.7 km (7:42 / km) | ||
| Prologue of the Colorado 5 Days, a sprint in the sprint series. Felt really tired! Couldn't run very well. Missed 8 to the right, as did several people. Angelica made up a minute on me by 4, and she stayed ahead (but within view) until she spiked 8 and pulled away. Not terribly pleased but it wasn't too bad. Sunny, warm but not hot.
7th F, good for 34 points (I don't think that's a counter for me, if it is, it's just a point or two more).
| Orienteering race 58:00 [4]*** 7.5 km (7:44 / km) | ||
| Chase, Badger Gulch, Colorado 5 Days. Started out sunny, got cloudy, and eventually started raining. I had on my sunglasses and had to take them off; stuffed them in my pants with one earpiece out, but I found out after the race that I lost a lense. Serious drag.
Started about a half minute behind Franchesca W (Texas jr), passing her on the way to 4. Saw a group of people stopping and looking way too early for 4, including Viktoria and Steve Gregg. Hillary S. had passed me and she was just ahead. When she hesitated I almost said, keep going, you're right, but she figured it out. So did Viktoria, racing past us to the control. I just managed to be within vision of a train led by Viktoria. Most of them missed 6 on the hillside, to the left. I was a bit to the left but not by as much; arrived there at the same time. Viktoria and Hillary (and the guys) slowly pulled away and I just kept trying to run as best I could. Lost sight of V after 11 (spectator control). Hillary slowing, I was just behind her. We spiked the last control, but as we approached I saw Viktoria and someone else behind her coming from the other direction. We punched ahead of them (but V is too fast for me and she and Rick Breseman sprinted past me); I didn't realize Angelica was with V & Rick until I heard her talking (!!) behind me in the run-in. Good run but probably shouldn't have run so hard...
