Orienteering race 1:31:07 [4]**** 7.02 km (12:59 / km)
shoes: VJ Falcon
Boulder Dash Day 2. Not raining! That alone lifted my spirits. Kissy started 6 min ahead of me today, Nadim 4. Tim Good started 2 minutes after, and while I was waiting to start he said to me "I'm going to get you today!" (I beat him by not much on Saturday.) I don't care! I expect him to beat me. But then I gave it away to him, when I turned on the wrong trail at the triangle (!!! stupid !!!); he caught me at #1. I stayed on the road much longer than he, hitting the terrain higher and contouring around. Dropped down from 3 to 4, which seemed like a good idea at the time. I did fine, it was probably just too slow. Careful leaving 4 so I knew where I was when I hit the trail and I read my way in to 5. Saw someone in a Quantico suit ahead and I thought it was Don Davis. At the control, I saw it was Kissy -- and she said something about today not being as good as yesterday. Saw Tim coming back to the control as I was on my way out. Sloppy getting to the trail, should have just headed straight to the big trail or to the little one. Hit just before the junction. Then had trouble in the circle on 6; things didn't seem quite right. Surprised Kissy didn't catch me. Tim caught me at 7, and we were together to 8, which was helpful. I was trying to be careful to 9 but still ended up a bit off to the side, which I figured out quickly. On my way to 10 I saw Kissy and I motioned that 9 was behind me. A bit high on 10. Trails to 11, and when I was still there Kissy came in. Shouldn't have helped her! ;-) On 13 I got distracted a bit by others who were heading to the big cliff south of the one I wanted. Stupid! As I was leaving the control, Nadim was coming in! Ouch, 4 min lost to me. He sped past me on the trail to 14 and of course was gone. I was losing energy on that long running leg, with the hill at the finish. No more navigational errors, at least.
Well, a better day so that's nice, but I still did a lot of stuff wrong. I don't know if I'm just distracted by other things in my life and am having trouble concentrating, or I'm lazy, or I've gotten more stupid. I think partly I've been worried too much about my body aches. The active ankle worked fine, ankle was okay (though still sore).

Red Day 2 - Splits

Saturday Oct 15

Event: Boulder Dash

Orienteering race 1:53:25 [4]**** 6.99 km (16:14 / km) +315m 13:15 / km
shoes: VJ Falcon
Beaver Brook Assn., NH; Boulder Dash, Red, Day 1. Rainy, 8th straight day of rain, constant rain, lots of mud and high streams. I think the rain distracted me more than I expected, at least in the beginning. I blew #1 when I was almost within sight of it but something happened in my brain that made me think I needed to turn north along the hillside and I ended up going along a steep hillside covered with mountain laurel. Finally I realized my error and, kicking myself, recovered. Marty H-T caught me at #1. We both drifted right going to #2, me much worse. I hit the trail before the stone wall. Tanner Harrison, running orange, caught me at #2. Seemed like a hard control for orange.
Missed #3, finding the Blue control first and taking a bit of time to figure it out. Headed for the stream and rethought my first crossing place, eventually crossing on a log just past the beaver dam.
4 & 5 were fine. Thought I knew just where I was going to 6, but was off, finally finding myself a bit west of the control. I should slow down. 7 went well. Came to a big pond on the way to 8 and wasn't sure what it was; whatever my interpretation of it was, wasn't right, as I ended up southwest of the control. Kissy (started 2 min behind) was heading from where I was back to 8 when I was still figuring it out. Drat. 9 was fine. 10 was a mess. Decided to go straight, and thought I was reading everything well but then things just didn't make sense, and there was no control. Bailed out to the trail and tried again, which worked but wasn't fast. Took the S-shaped trail to the south for 12, missing the last trail junction because of white runners. The circle covered up some pertinent details on the map and it took me some time to figure it out. Next several controls were fine. Passed Sharon on the bridge as I was heading to 14 and she was going to 12. Careful going to 16, which worked. One last error on 18 -- which I'm sure I could have seen had I just looked up -- but I was following the map, which was distinctly not right in this area; the cliff was much higher (the trail, and a sign that said "trail," were AT the control) and I found myself at the lower trail to the south scratching my head.
Overall, a pretty poor run. My goal was to go slowly and cleanly, and I did neither (though I ended up slow by not not being clean ...). Really got to get my act together.

Red Day 1 - Splits

Thursday Oct 13

Cross training (recumbent exercise bike) 32:00 [3]
A short workout between a bit of overtime at work and dinner with the in-laws.
Right knee and left ankle bothering me, even walking. Grrr.

Wednesday Oct 12

Trail 40:18 [3]
C&O Canal Towpath, downstream from Lock 10 and back. Just an easy jog on the path, on an overcast and pleasantly cool afternoon.
Left ankle hurts -- definitely need the Active Ankle this weekend, hope it fits nicely into one of my new shoes ... -- and my left knee was a bit painful as well. Otherwise I felt okay.

Tuesday Oct 11

Nordic Track 41:03 [3]
The joy of having exercise equipment in the house is the flexibility of time it gives me ... I came home, had a snack & read some of the paper, then did a bunch of ironing in preparation for quilting (mmm, ironing, I bet all the guys are jealous), and some actual quilting. And then I found some time for some light sweating.
Continued reading OnEarth. Couldn't quite finish it.

Monday Oct 10

Road run warm up/down 14:53 [3]
Getting from home to the trail and back through the neighborhoods, nice and slow.
Trail intervals (Half-miles) 18:36 [5]2.5 mi (7:25 / mi)
Half mile repeats on the Georgetown Branch trail. Unpaved rails-to-trails with a slight uphill grade towards Bethesda. It's barely noticeable, but my times going that way were significantly slower and I felt faster going the other way.
Morning, feeling fresh & enjoying the cool temperatures. Nice to have a holiday!
Splits: 3:42, 3:37, 3:52, 3:50, 3:35 (first two and last downhill towards Connecticut; other two uphill). Nadim tells me that the elevation gain is around 65 feet. It's very gradual but I felt it today!
Trail warm up/down 21:16 [2]
Recovery between half mile repeats.
