Sunday Nov 20

Event: Susquehanna Stumble

Orienteering race 3:47:47 [4]*** 16.2 km (14:04 / km) +680m 11:37 / km
shoes: VJ Falcon
Susquehanna Stumble, Long. My legs felt tired right at the beginning; guess I ran too hard on Saturday after all.
Was with, on and off, Angelica, Tim G, Dave O, Michael W for the first map. All were running faster than I (not sure about Michael) but making enough small errors that I'd catch them or I'd get ahead and they'd catch me. I was pretty clean on the first map, then fell apart on the second.
At Q, the last control of the first window on the second map (got that?), Dave & the other guys were ahead of us (having found the trail, which A & I missed) and Dave yelled "it's here!" when he found it. But I didn't believe him, and went a bit the other direction. Karl Alswede caught me there. After a minute or less, I decided Dave must have meant it, and went over to where he had been. Yup.
From then on, I was alone, and made mistake after mistake. It became a miserable run that was really no fun at all. The woods were okay, but the hills were huge and we had to cross the ridge two ways. I kept misreading things so that caused me trouble, and I ran off the map (briefly; figured it out right away and got back on ... Dave O was not so lucky ... if that's luck :-). And it started getting cold. My feet got blistered early on; the moleskin on the heels didn't last and I got toe and balls of feet blisters as well.
I got ahead of Dave when he was in the midst of his of-the-map oddessy; I didn't see him. Not too many others behind me.
Oh well. That's how it goes sometimes!

Long - Splits

Saturday Nov 19

Road run (paved trail) 52:29 [3]6.0 mi (8:44 / mi)
Regular Saturday morning six-mile run, Rock Creek Trail from Ken-Gar mile 7 to mile 4 and return. Got there just one minute after 8 (because I had to scrape, really scrape, the frost off my car ... grrr) and everyone was taking off just as I was putting my gloves on. I ended up passing everyone who was there, including Richie and Rosanne. Rosanne sped up and caught me at about mile 3.75 miles and we ran together the rest of the way, chatting. That was fun! We slowed a bit, partly because she seemed to be running slower than I today, partly because we hit the hilly section.
Very chilly this morning, first time below freezing since March, and it took me until mile 3 to warm up (hands, at least). I kept thinking "I'll warm up soon ..." and it took longer than I expected. Luckily it was sunny and calm. Nothing hurt, I think because everything was too numb. I think I run better in the cold, at least based on my splits, which felt easy. Or it could be that I'm finally getting back in shape.
Nah, it's the cold.
Splits: 9:09, 8:57, 8:22, 8:34, 8:50, 8:37.

Thursday Nov 17

Nordic Track 45:21 [3]
A nice workout before heading downtown to a conference (African Studies) on Metro.
Reading material: Utne.

Tuesday Nov 15

Trail 1:00:25 [3]
C & O Canal Towpath and some nearby trails, from Lock 10 to Carderock and back. Took the small trail just before Lock 11 that leads to the river, and checked out Plummer Island, "The most thoroughly studied island in North America." It's pretty cool, with a variety of woods thicknesses, and a bunch of cliffs and boulders near the hill, atop of which sits an old cabin, still in use by -- apparently -- anyone who wants to use it (mostly biologists). And with a view of the Beltway: what could be better? I counted 8 plaques on various cliffs, memorializing various men who apparently did a bunch of studying on Plummer Island: an entomologist, ornithologist, several biologists. Really wonderful spot.
From there I headed down the towpath to Carderock & back through the parking lots. Timed two miles on the towpath: 9:45, 9:21.
Felt pretty good. Perhaps the last balmy day for a while. :-)
