Orienteering race 1:29:30 [4]*** 7.4 km (12:06 / km) +295m 10:05 / km
(injured) shoes: VJ Falcon
QOC Prince William Forest, Red course.
Well, the blister stuff I got yesterday didn't work. "Stays in place" ... not! On the way to #2 I actually felt it slip off. Went from tolerable annoying pain to searing miserable pain. Considered a DNF, especially since I was concerned about leaving enough time for Nadim to run Blue, but I stuck it out. Hurt especially bad going uphill (often I turned my foot sideways).

Okay navigationally most of the way, but I was often distracted by the heel and may not have made the best or quickest decisions. The injury situation was compounded either right before or right after 9 -- climbing over a small log, and I ran the side of my right knee into a tree limb stump. Unavoidable scream of pain, followed by silent screams of pain and whimpering for a minute or two. I thought I might actually cry from the pain. Youch. This injury definitely distracted me on the leg to 10, where I decided not to follow the nice handrails but to go across the flat green spur. I ended up going down the wrong reentrant and not figuring it out for a while. Then I either had to go way around on a trail or up and over a hill. Picked the hill. Painful error (in more ways than one!).

lost a bit of time on the penultimate control, in an area that I know is tricky. Was a bit too cautious, perhaps.

So now I'm a wreck. But Nadim bonked on the Blue course and is feeling worse than I am now. However, he'll feel better after more food and sleep, while my pain will linger a few days. :-(

Upside: woods were gorgeous. Kind of cool but fine for running.

Trail warm up/down 18:00 [2]
shoes: VJ Falcon
From the parking lot near the tavern up to the start on the trail and back. Lots of uphill on the way out. Heel already hurting.

Great Falls, MD. Ran most of Francis's Blue course that wasn't allowed to be used for the MD champs in January. The streamers were still up. Didn't do the part that was the same as the Brown course that we all did. Felt a bit tired (Max insisted on being carried a whole lot on Friday ... that wears me out!), especially on the uphills. Had to walk a few of them. One weird error I haven't figured out yet -- probably just lack of concentration. Otherwise, pretty good navigating. Running was a bit slower than normal. Woods were great, not Ohio-like at all.

My heel hurt most of the time. I was going to make a mental note to buy some Compeed before we leave for Ohio, but then I realized we're racing tomorrow so I stopped at CVS on the way home. They didn't have Compeed, got what seemed the next best thing. We'll see how it goes.

I was going to laugh at the meteorologists for forecasting rain today, because it was sunny/partly sunny (and breezy, c. 50) the whole time I was away. But Nadim said he and Max had to come inside because of showers. Wow, it's only a few miles from here to Great Falls.

Road run warm up/down (Warm up, recovery, cool d) 49:59 [2]
From home to the far trailhead for the Georgetown Branch Trail, on the trail (unpaved) to the first half-mile marker just past downtown Bethesda, then half-mile intervals with half-mile recoveries. Did 2 halves going towards DC, continued on a recovery that same direction, then turned around and did three halves on the way back. The last one had a mile recovery to avoid having to run hard through downtown Bethesda -- can be a mess. The last one also was unpaved. The previous two were uphill. You don't notice the elevation loss outbound, but it's obvious on the way back!
About 48, cloudy, felt colder than that. My hands got cold.
Road run intervals (Half mile repeats) 18:37 [4]2.5 mi (7:27 / mi)
On the Capital Crescent Trail (last one on the Georgetown Branch Trail). Since only half miles are marked, I had a full half mile recovery between because I didn't feel like jogging around the markers as recovery. Felt like I was working fairly hard but the times were pretty pathetic. Well that's why we train I guess.
Passed Jon T biking the other direction during the last one.
Splits: 3:37, 3:42, 3:49 (uphill), 3:48 (uphill), 3:41 (unpaved)
Note
Today in the mail I received the entry form and info for the annual 5k race at work -- a co-worker sent it to me. I received the same thing from another co-worker yesterday. :-) This is the 16th annual running of the race, and I'm one of two people who have run all editions, which everyone in my office is aware of, so they're looking out for me. In fact one of my co-workers told me she called the registrars and they said they knew me and if I missed the entry deadline, that would be okay.
The race is scheduled for the first week I'm planning to be back at work, in about 7 weeks. Figured I better start doing something faster, hence today's workout.

Road run 51:06 [3]
In the morning, once Nadim was awake/showered/fed so he could watch cranky Max.

Across Wisconsin on Battery to the trail cut-through to the NIH trail, through the nearby neighborhood, across Old Georgetown, down Glenwood -- past the three houses we couldn't buy :-( -- through the "presidential neighborhood" (all the streets are named after long-dead presidents), briefly through split-level land around Bradley Hills ES, then back on different streets but roughly the same area.
Chilly, around 37, a bit windy, but sunny. Legs felt really good and finally no sore throat while running.

Tuesday Mar 21

Nordic Track 45:07 [3]
Continuing reading Psychology Today.
Not much else to add.
