| Road run warm up/down 5:00 [2] | ||
| In the campground on the way to the start & around. | ||
| Orienteering race (sprint) 17:26 [5]*** 2.4 km (7:16 / km) +80m 6:14 / km | ||
| shoes: VJ Integrator | ||
| US Sprint Champs, course 2 (green/brown/orange). Running my age group since it was a US Champs event and I am not in shape. The course had a nice mix of woods & campground navigation; the woods tended towards very open and that was fun. Got a bit confused when I came across the SI station for the relay and lunch-selling people; thought I somehow was back at the start. But I reminded myself that I was just where I wanted to be and this was the relay set-up. Did hesitate for several seconds.
2nd woman on course; 1st -- Anna S-S, time I think was 16:59. I never had her speed. Not bad to be even that close to her.
| Orienteering race (relay) 35:29 [4]*** 3.8 km (9:20 / km) +165m 7:40 / km | ||

| US Relay Champs, first leg ("orange"), for OK's team. With the absence of Snorkle ("too busy with work"), we went to an 8-point configuration for the first time, with Mary Jones & her 3 points joining Spike, Mook, and me.
Many of the other contending teams had top women running first, as well: Anna S-S (SLOC), Viktoria (WCOC), Suzanne (CSU), Angelica (DVOA), Dasha (another DVOA team. I didn't expect to stay up with them; just wanted to keep it as close as I could. Very physical course. And while it's been years since I've run an orange course, this course didn't strike me as being orange difficulty -- the control locations were okay, probably, but the legs themselves were advanced. Probably because of the forking issue. Oh, and did I mention it was physical?? I was navigating very well, and running about as hard as I could, when I came to one of the infamous mud trails. I thought, it's the relays, suck it up and run through the mud. I did, and I lost my shoe. Pulled off into the thick mud. This was the shoe with my Active Ankle, which stayed on my foot of course. It was hard to pull the shoe out of the mud; I had visions of my e-punch coming off in the mud because it was on my hand as I pulled at the shoe. Finally free of the mud, I proceeded to the stream and washed everything off and struggled to get my AA'd foot back into my shoe. Agony thinking of the time slipping away. In reality, it was probably just over a minute lost. Little navigational error at the end when I came off the campground circle and saw #14 instead of #13. Finally tagged off to Mary, about 5 minutes behind the leaders. Mary had some troubles on her "yellow" leg (which Sandy F described as a "2.9km Red course"); Spike and Mook had decent legs, Mook especially, pulling us up into 4th by the finish. Ahead: DVOA, WCOC, SLOC. Nadim's QOC team finished 3rd in the 4-point category! Yay. I held Max in the snugglie for a few hours while watching the relay; my back got very sore from that. It was also fairly cold/raw at the meet site. What happened to our 65 degrees? Cloudy and seemed to get colder throughout the day. Overall, nice relay setup, good logistics, etc. My only complaint is that the courses seemed way too long (and hard for the "orange" and "yellow" legs) given how physical it was -- the winning teams weren't finished until 4:15-4:30 and the slower teams had to hang around longer. I suggest shorter than usual courses for all relays. Really increases the fun level and the competitiveness because more teams can be closer.
Sprint O/Br/Green - Splits
Friday Mar 31 | ||
| Event: Flying Pig X (OCIN) | ||
| Trail warm up/down 10:00 [2] | ||
| Along the very muddy wet path to the start of the o' race.
I had insisted on stopping at Walgreen's to buy some Compeed while we were just a few miles from the meet site, even though Nadim insisted we "didn't have time." He'd tried to find some for me at a CVS in the morning, to no avail. I ran in, found the Compeed (not labeled as such on the box), and immediately put it on. Worked like a charm, no heel pain.
| Orienteering race 41:45 [4]*** 4.4 km (9:29 / km) +180m 7:53 / km | ||
| shoes: VJ Integrator | ||
| Flying Pig X Middle Distance race, Red. I ran after the last scheduled starter on Red (Peter G -- oddly, never saw him in the woods!) for child-care reasons. Sooo glad to have the nice building to hang out in while Nadim was out doing his course. The mounted albino deer really scared Max. Peter & his beard, not so much.
My run was pretty good, I felt fairly strong except of course on the hills. I think my route choices were a bit conservative early, but overall I was pretty clean. Aside from Pavlina, who blew everyone out of the water w/ a 34-something, I was close to the other women, but typically just at the tail end of the top pack.

Thursday Mar 30 | ||
| Trail (w babyJogger) 1:00:13 [3] | ||
| Ran in the morning with Max while Nadim was getting his haircut and working. Went down to the Georgetown Branch Trail (c. 16:30 on that, counting both directions, unpaved) to the Capital Crescent Trail, as far as Kenwood to see the cherry blossoms & back the same route. The blooms aren't at peak yet, so we'll go for another run next week to see them, and more than just at the entrance to the neighborhood.
Max fell asleep somewhere; I noticed as we were in downtown Bethesda on the way back. The bumpy ride on the G'town Branch trail woke him up and he did the head moving thing to fall back asleep. Smiley & giggly when we finished. Knee doesn't hurt if I don't bend it too much, so it is fine for running. O' should be mostly okay. Beautiful weather, around 60, sunny. Lots of little kids out with their caregivers, several no doubt from the daycares we won't get in ... Hi Mom! I'll write next week.

| Meredith suggested Max & I go with her & her son Toby to the Germantown Pool, since Max likes getting wet. His first experience in a pool! He loved it, after some initial apprehension. The pool has a great area for kids, various stuff for different abilities. Once he got comfortable, he was happy to go in deep water with me, get splashed by the waterfall, and go down the last two feet of one slide (me holding him so he wouldn't go under water). Great fun for him. I enjoyed it too, but got no exercise benefit out of it. | ||
Monday Mar 27 | ||
| Nordic Track 40:56 [3] | ||
| (injured) | ||
| Max fell asleep around 10:30 am and I grabbed the opportunity to do a little Nordic Tracking while he was out. He only lasted an hour.
I figured NT would not hurt my blister or knee too much -- not much knee raising on the track. The knee is definitely sore, especially going uphill. About a one-inch gash. I think it'll be fine in a day or two. Finished Psychology Today and wasn't prepared for that; had to run upstairs to get another mag -- E -- to start reading.
| Note | ||
| Pushed Max in the stroller for about 30 minutes, to the playground and then back (the long way, down the trail Nadim mentioned to me, past the high school, zigzaged back. Max was asleep by the time we got back but of course woke up as soon as I took him out of the stroller. :-(
Many liftings of Max up to the various slides. He loves the slides.
Sunday Mar 26 | ||

| QOC Prince William Forest, Red course.
Well, the blister stuff I got yesterday didn't work. "Stays in place" ... not! On the way to #2 I actually felt it slip off. Went from tolerable annoying pain to searing miserable pain. Considered a DNF, especially since I was concerned about leaving enough time for Nadim to run Blue, but I stuck it out. Hurt especially bad going uphill (often I turned my foot sideways). Okay navigationally most of the way, but I was often distracted by the heel and may not have made the best or quickest decisions. The injury situation was compounded either right before or right after 9 -- climbing over a small log, and I ran the side of my right knee into a tree limb stump. Unavoidable scream of pain, followed by silent screams of pain and whimpering for a minute or two. I thought I might actually cry from the pain. Youch. This injury definitely distracted me on the leg to 10, where I decided not to follow the nice handrails but to go across the flat green spur. I ended up going down the wrong reentrant and not figuring it out for a while. Then I either had to go way around on a trail or up and over a hill. Picked the hill. Painful error (in more ways than one!). lost a bit of time on the penultimate control, in an area that I know is tricky. Was a bit too cautious, perhaps. So now I'm a wreck. But Nadim bonked on the Blue course and is feeling worse than I am now. However, he'll feel better after more food and sleep, while my pain will linger a few days. :-( Upside: woods were gorgeous. Kind of cool but fine for running.
