Orienteering race ("long") 1:17:16 [4]*** 7.61 km (10:09 / km) +240m 8:46 / km

US Long Course Champs, Camp Pinacle/Thacher St. Park, near Albany, NY. Green Y course (F45 et. al)
Nadim and I ended up using our assigned starts, 2 min apart, and leaving Max in childcare, his first time. It went well, so that's good. They had lots of toys and other kids he knew, plus snacks when he got unhappy (only once, they told us). We both started early. Kristin started 6 min after me and she caught me at #4. That showed me my route to #3 wasn't very good. For some reason, I was being overly conservative in my route choices, avoiding the woods with the fissures (they were hard to run in...), and the hilly trails and bugging out to the roads way too often. Took the road/fields to #3 -- flat & fast running but way too much extra distance. To #4 I took some trails but then dropped down to the park road and attacked from below. To #8 I again went to the road, which was a fine choice but I should have taken the lower trail and angled up on the angled trail instead of going directly to the road.
On the road on the way to #3, I could feel the Compeed on my left heel slipping off -- just like in PWF a few weeks ago. Resigned myself to a very sore heel (and Nadim can attest to the pain I felt, after he watched me in agony when putting on my shoe at a stop on the way home). But I don't think it affected my racing this time.

My navigation was solid, my running was as good as it was going to be, but my route choices on the long legs killed me. Over 17 min behind Kristin :-( and 6+ behind Sandy T. (US titles for all, once again.) Valerie was second F45, not that far behind -- her training is paying off. (Sorry Valerie, I'm not going to carry Max in a race anytime soon ...)

Another gorgeous day weather-wise, and interesting woods and fun course (though perhaps a bit short for a long o', with the winning time under an hour? or is that what it's supposed to be?)
Really nice to see Sandy out again. We had some nice conversations.

THIS is how I like to spend my weekends! A close-to-perfect day in my book: great weather (cool, high in the 60s, sunny), a fun o' course with a decent map and interesting woods, a good result, no injuries, and lots of hanging around with good friends. Nadim and I had split starts and I went early (along with Andy Hall and other parents doing the split thing) while Nadim watched/played with Max on the playground and surrounding area with many other kids. Bonus to have the playground right there, even if it wasn't terribly toddler friendly!

I was a bit shakey on the early controls, unconfident going to 2 once I got low into the correct area, and missing 3 by a minute or more. Sandy Tetreault caught me at 3, but I wasn't sure if she was running Green or Red -- she'd originally signed up for Red, then emailed a request to run Green, but she told me they hadn't changed her to Green. After I saw her multiple times on the course I decided Green & Red probably weren't that similar and she'd moved to Green. (She had.) After the early controls I did better, and it did help to see Sandy because it reminded me I needed to really run hard and push through the less-pleasant areas. Lost sight of her with about 4 controls to go, all of which I hit right on (or pretty close). Ended up ahead of her, second on course only to Kristin (2 1/2 min or so back of her). Sandy wasn't far behind. It was just like the old days! Except now, we're all in different age groups -- so US titles for all of us. :-)

Road run 42:06 [3]
Busy day. In the morning/lunch hour I took Max to work (Take Your Child to Work Day ... officially for school-age kids but I figured the office would already be disrupted so why not go, and we got to see some people we hadn't seen on our first trip; lunched with Meredith and Toby in the cafeteria -- that was a trip), then a nap (for Max; I had laundry etc to do), then Michelle and Damon came over; the boys got along great so I think the arrangement will work out pretty well.

Then finally, Paul, Max, & I went for a run through the neighborhoods. Paul pushed Max in the BabyJogger for 22 min then, as we were heading uphill toward home, he turned it over to me. :-)
We went across Wisconsin to the NIH trail, down McKinnley to Bradmoor, and up Roosevelt & back via the NIH trail. Nice neighborhood, and good weather for running. Legs felt tired even when I wasn't pushing Max.

Hi Mom! Glad you got home safely. I'll write more after the weekend.

Nordic Track 40:43 [3]
Max fell asleep before 10 this morning, on the couch. I moved him to his crib and he didn't even wake up. Then I got the laundry ready to go and went into his room to look for dirty clothes ... mistake, as that woke him up (but not until I left the room). Several minutes of distressed crying.
I, being the compassionate mother that I am, left him crying in his crib and went to the basement to wash the clothes and get a little exercise in.

Road run 50:24 [3]
Ran with Paul and Max in the BabyJogger; Paul pushed him for the first half (the downhill part :-) and I pushed him the second. We went through East Bethesda to the Georgetown Branch Trail to the Capital Crescent Trail, through Kenwood, Edgemoor, English Village, & Battery Park and home. Paul definitely is able to run faster than me, despite his McDonald's addiction (and its effects), except, evidently, uphill. Once I had Max, I had to slow down the pace. Nice morning for running.

Monday Apr 24

Hiking 30:00 [1]
Max and I went to the Rockville City Park (all wooded) for a hike. I'd hoped to visit Croydon Nature Center but unfortunately it's closed on Mondays. Still, the trails in the park were wonderful, and Max had a great time hiking and exploring the woods. He did his share of walking/finding cool things to examine (dried leaves, acorns, sticks, rocks, water). I carried him up and down the big hill and when we were close to or crossing the creek because he was very interested in the water and would have gone right to it. I let him splash his hands in the creek but not as extensively or for as long as he would have liked. Much unhappiness when I pulled him away from that. But there was always something else cool to see!
We were out for about 75 minutes total, but there was a lot of standing and sitting around going at the pace of a toddler in full exploration mode that I'm not logging.
The park and its adjacent mansion/grounds would be great to map. The woods are quite open and it flows into Rock Creek Park (which we probably couldn't get permission to use). Would be good for a summer short series/sprint.
