| Road run (hike-bike trail) 36:41 [3]4.0 mi (9:10 / mi) | ||
| Since I'm running the summer short series tonight, I went a bit shorter than usual. But wanted to run because I haven't been getting enough training in, and it's cooler at 8 than at 4:30 so it's nice to take advantage of it.
Nadim was going to run, too, with Max in the jogger, but his car needs a new battery & we didn't want to chance driving it to the park, and the jogger doesn't fit as easily in my car. So he & Max played on the playground & the basketball court (where a large group of runners were doing post-run calisthenics) while I ran. Did 4 miles instead of 6. Felt pretty good. Splits were slow. Mile splits: 9:28, 9:08, 9:13, 8:51. Around 75, humidity around 65%. But didn't feel too bad.

| Summer Short Series, on a new map in Rockville city park. Nadim made the map and set a fun course, starting out with a few sprint legs around the school, then into the woods. Since we started at 30 sec intervals, we all saw a lot of people. Was doing pretty well until I misread the trails on the way to #12, made a 90° error, and climbed an extra hill. I saw both Ted G & Greg L on the hillside, which made me believe I was in the right place. I should have belived my compass ...
Otherwise, it went pretty well and was good fun. There are some very nice woods here. Nadim did a good job of mapping the area given that he didn't have a lot of time and a big hunk of the fieldchecking was done at night. (!) Nice turn-out for the event on a hot, sticky evening. Team nets over $100. :-)

| Road run 49:51 [3] | ||
| Since I had a class today that didn't start until 9, I had the luxury of sleeping a bit later and running a bit longer. Though once again -- after much fiddling and thinking I had it right -- I don't think my alarms, either one of them, went off. Then again, maybe they did and I hit the snooze or the off button and then forgot. At any rate, I slept about 20 min longer than planned, which meant that by the time I got home, Nadim was up, showered, dressed, and had Max up & dressed.
I ran through Woodmont Triangle to Edgemoor & back via Battery Park. Humid this morning. Nice to run in early daylight (though still a bit darkish even at 5:45).

| Road run warm up/down 35:12 [2] | ||
| Part on the roads, part on the track. To the track the long way as a warm up, in the dark-dark. Decided to do my intervals starting on the opposite side from normal because it's lighter there. Track gets some light from the streetlights up by the school. Felt okay despite the high humidity, just groggy from the early hour. | ||
| Track intervals (quarters) 7:26 [4]1.0 mi (7:25 / mi) | ||
| 4x400m. Pleased that I was able to make myself do these, even though they were pathetically slow. Mid-way through the third, I came upon fellow track-users: three women, power walking and doing some gabbing as well. Splits: 1:53, 1:53, 1:49, 1:51 | ||
| Note | ||
| Melanie at work (who beats me in the annual office 5k; she's nationally ranked in cyclocross or something like that) has started running at lunch on Tuesdays & Thursdays & wants me to join her. That'll be helpful, some motivation to run during the day vs the dark mornings or the sweltering afternoons. Can't tomorrow as I'm at training, so I'll plan to start next week. Yay! | ||

| (rest day) | ||
| Couldn't make myself get up this morning; one of my alarms is now not sounding (Max likes to play with buttons so perhaps he hit the volume) but the other one woke me up. I just kept hitting the snooze. I'm getting less willing to run in the dark as it continues to creep later.
Despite not running, I felt tired all day. I did whirl Max around in a basket for several minutes (a minute or two, three or four times) ... it left me breathing hard & I considered logging it -- but what would I even call it? So I'll just be the lazy sloth I have been the past few days.

| Road run 42:36 [3] | ||
| Had a doctor's appointment at 8:15 this morning, so it didn't make sense to drive to work, work for 45 minutes, and drive back to the doctor's. So instead I got to sleep in an extra half hour or so and run in daylight. :-)
Down Battery Lane to the trail spur leading to the NIH trail; down Roosevelt & over to Glenwood; through English Village; into & through Edgewood, and back via the Woodmont Triangle area of downtown Bethesda. Feel pretty good after Saturday's excursion (& Sunday's rest). Saw more runners this morning (5) than the total on all other early mornings combined. Mid-60s, felt nice.
