Event: Hudson Highlander

Orienteering race 5:02:38 [4]*** 26.2 km (11:33 / km)
Hudson Highlander IX. One of the things about being one of the Magnificent Seven (is it 7??) is that I can't possibly miss a Highlander, and have to finish at all costs. Not that that was a big problem this year, but some year the streak will have to end. Thanks to Janet T, both Nadim & I were able to run while Max was well taken care of. (How many hyphens should that phrase have? I think 3.)
So we started with the trail run, which incorporated the King/Queen of the Mountain race. I didn't work hard at that as I knew I had no chance at either title (trail & mtn, not King *and* Queen...) and trying would wear me out. The serious downhill on the non-trail portion of the trail run was pretty intense. I think that, and the other downhills, like at the end, are why my quads feel so trashed. Don't remember them hurting quite so much in previous years.
Got caught up by a group near 3; we all were looking around a bit for it. Susie DW found it (others in the area: Tracy Olafson, Tori Campbell, Tim Good, Paul Regan, a couple guys I didn't know, I think). Susie was first to leave, me second, and after about 20 meters I saw a route I liked better, but it meant going over a rise through the blueberries. Wondered how many people I'd suck off on my route choice. It was a good route but then Paul & I (& the other women) blew the control, and then Rick DW & some others caught us. I made a different route choice to 6 ... and then blew the execution, drifting way left and finding myself near 3 again. Argh. It took me a long time to make up for that, or rather to catch the people I had been with at 5. Finally saw the DeWitts & Tracy at 12. We, and a couple guys I didn't know, were together on and off for most of the rest of the loop. I was often near the front and finding the control but not quickly -- often a bit of looking around, which allowed the slower people of the group to catch up. I went right through the marsh on the way to 19; it was very cold which at first was refreshing but after a while it was numbing. I was first of my "group" to make it to the map exchange. Only Rick was in sight when I left on the last 4+ km.
It was hard for me to push myself enough on this last part, as I was tired & aching and there was no one around me. Rick caught me at 23 and he took off; I kept him in sight but just. I ended up 32nd overall (20 places lower than last year! Stronger field, weaker Peggy.). I think I was 6th or 7th woman but I was chatting during the awards so I may be off. Worst finish ever, in that regard! But pretty inevitable.
It wasn't a horrible run for me, just could have been better. Only one fall: landed on my palms on a rock. Stung for a minute or so. My feet (soles, toes) are quite sore; perhaps it's time to rethink wearing o' spikes in such a long race. Well, maybe after the Minnegoat I'll think about it. :-)
Good running weather, good food, good organization, yadda yadda. The woods were a bit too blueberryish for true enjoyment, but they weren't all bad. And it was *beautiful,* especially the views on the way to the King of the Mountain. Thanks to Daniel for making sure the race happened!

Note
(sick) (rest day)
Woke up yesterday with a sore throat. (The Mary-Cristina cold??) A bit achy during the day, dull headache, and a slight fever by evening. After putting Max to bed, I went to bed myself.
Woke up feeling not too great; throat still sore, still achy, but no fever. Went to work but decided my plan to run at lunchtime wasn't a good one under the circumstances. So I skipped it. We'll see about tomorrow. If it's as cold tomorrow morning as it was today, I might skip again (partly because I'd have to take Max in the Jogger & I'd really have to bundle him up.) We're leaving around noon for the HH so not a lot of time to play around with.

Thursday Oct 12

Cross training (recumbent exercise bike) 35:00 [2]
At lunchtime. Will I ever remember to bring my own reading material? I read about King Tut in an old Nat Geo.
Stretching 10:00 [2]
My regular routine, which covers all the basics (and some not-so-basics).

Wednesday Oct 11

Trail 43:12 [3]
Planned to run at lunchtime, but I had forgotten about my monthly quilt guild meeting, which is during lunch. Can't skip that! I don't have time to quilt these days but I sure get inspired seeing the other womens' work.
So I ran after work instead. Drove (it's maybe a half mile!) to Turkey Run Park. It's right on the way, and by driving there I could skip running through the parking lots & on some crappy trails and just run on the nice stuff. Started out on the uplands trail, which drops down to the creek as it goes under the Parkway. Then ran on the trails in Langley Fork Park (and whatever other parkland is there; it's a mess of different jurisdictions). Passed the high school x-c teams; cool to see them on the trails.
Mid-60s but humid & overcast. Right shin hurts where I bashed it during the last race & lower where I bashed it on the shower track. :-( But otherwise I felt pretty good.

Tuesday Oct 10

Trail 55:21 [3]
Didn't plan to run quite this long. From Lock 10 parking on the C&O Canal, ran upstream on the towpath (towards Great Falls), turning off on the Billygoat Trail Section C; took that to the far parking lot of Carderock, and then back on the towpath. My left knee was sore, and my shin, where I bashed it during Sunday's race, hurt, and I generally felt a bit sore & tired. But it was another beautiful day and this is a lovely run, so that made it okay. I felt like I often do towards the end of the Highlander: tired and heavy-legged but determined to keep running. So perhaps it was good preparation for this Sunday.
It was nearly 5:30 when I picked up Max because I left work a bit late and then ran longer than I planned. He was happy to see me. He's still a bit sleep-deprived from the weekend & was in turns clingy/cuddly and cranky. I feel kind of guilty for taking him on all these o' trips and making it hard for him to get all the rest he needs.
