| Orienteering 1:02:23 [3] | ||
| shoes: VJ Integrator | ||
| Orienteering training at Greenbelt, set up by Jon T. I had not been enthusiastic about this -- colder today, have to split starts & watch Max in the cold, and, c'mon, it's GREENBELT (which was well named). And I have other things to do around the house. But I knew I probably wouldn't get any exercise in if I didn't do this, so we all went.
I ran first, and we agreed I'd be back at a specific time, so Nadim would be able to start before the window ended. I had to cut out a few controls (14, 17-20) but that was not unexpected. Chilly out but was okay running. Made several smallish errors. But overall it was good fun and I enjoyed the course, with the short control-picking-type legs & the longer (trail option) ones. Wore my new Axis Gear tights, size L (Nadim & I both bought tights without trying them on at NAOC, and were chagrined to find they don't stretch the way normal lycra tights do. My size S were uncomfortably small, as were Nadim's L on him. The Ls are a bit baggy on me but preferable to the too-small Ss.). This left a gap on my upper ankle (need higher socks or to go back to gaiters or something), which, in GREENBELT is a bad idea. I did get a few scratches on my ankles. Also twisted my left ankle as I was on the run to the finish. It's a bit sore but I think it'll be okay.

Training - Splits | ||
Saturday Dec 2 | ||
| Road run (mostly gravel path) 47:58 [3] | ||
| Decided to run from home today instead of treking up to Ken-Gar, as it was chilly and we didn't want to take Max out in the BabyJogger. So Nadim & Max stayed home while I ran. To the Georgetown Branch Trail (thinking about how it would be if the Purple Line goes through here) to the Capital Crescent Trail, to the 4.5 mile marker just before the bridge over River Road. Turned around and went back the same way, but cut off the trail where Pearl Street hits it, and back straight down Pearl/Maryland to the house. Sunny, chilly, pretty calm morning; the trail was busy. I felt very good, though my pace was fairly sluggish. Been eating too much and not exercising enough. | ||
Friday Dec 1 | ||
| Cross training (recumbent exercise bike) 40:00 [3] | ||
| At lunchtime the temperature was 71 degrees, and it wasn't raining. But the radar showed a band of rain moving towards us from the south, and I really didn't want to get drenched and then have to go back to work. I'm not sure if it rained because I was down in the gym in the bowels of the building instead. Too bad I missed what is probably the last warm day for quite a while.
At least I remembered to bring a new magazine, December Runner's World. The woman on the elliptical trainer next to me (the only other person in the room) kept commenting on the snow storm in the midwest when it came on the news.
| Cross training (rower) 10:03 [3] | ||
| I think this is kind of boring. At least the tv was on and I could watch the predicted distance change as I changed my effort. | ||

| Happy 2nd Birthday Max!!!

| Road run 26:17 [3] | ||
| Pretty pathetic. No energy today, either during my run or sitting at my desk. Perhaps my body is fighting off whatever Max had over the weekend. At any rate, when I started running, I decided to hedge my energy bets by going on the paved 1.1x mile trail at work; if I felt good I could do more than one loop. I never did, though; legs felt heavy and it was an effort to run. My pace was abysmal. So I did just the one loop and headed back to the gym. I thought I could do some weights or stretching or something, but there was no energy/desire for that, either.
Some days are just like that. C'est la vie. Hope for better energy tomorrow!
Tuesday Nov 28 | ||
| Cross training (recumbent exercise bike) 40:00 [2] | ||
| I was going to run at lunchtime and was heading for the gym to change. As I opened the door to the stairs (that only go to the gym), a guy was ahead of me about to go down the stairs. He looked at me funny, and I thought, hmm, he must be just going to use the men's bathroom to change to go outside or use the punching bag because it's women's hours. Then I realized it's Tuesday and it was, instead, men's hours. So a quick change of plans: head to the new gym (no gender-specific hours) and cross train instead. It's just much more of a pain to get outside to run from the new gym. (I love my excuses.)
Nice & easy, finished up reading Runner's World, and snuck a few peeks at The Price is Right on the telly. What a stupid show.
| Stretching 10:00 [2] | ||
| After the biking, my more-or-less regular set of stretches: legs, core, arms. I don't like doing the core exercises. And it shows. | ||

| (rest day) | ||
| I was turning out of the driveway when I realized I'd forgotten to put my running shoes in my gym bag. Rather than go get them, I decided I'd have a rest day. As it turned out, I would have had to skip running anyway, as Max is still sick and we kept him home from daycare. Nadim stayed with him in the morning and I came home around lunchtime for the rest of the day.
I *could* have Nordic Tracked while he took his nap, but instead I reveled in the unexpected lazy free time. :-)
