Trail warm up/down 2:00 [1]
In the fields at the start/finish area. Just trying to determine if my body will hold out on the long sprint, or I should run the short one first and see how it goes. Not a very good test as I was wearing my street shoes because spikes weren't allowed in the building and I didn't feel like putting them on and then taking them off in a few minutes.
Orienteering race 34:52 [4]*** 4.8 km (7:16 / km)
Lake Fairfax, Long Sprint. New map of a new area, which is always exciting. I've run some of the trails here a couple times, when in the area for (work) training, but from the other end of the park, which wasn't mapped. I do remember the picnic area, though.
Most of my concern today revolved around my toe & my calf. My toe seemed to feel, all day, like it was simply frozen, but I'm still not entirely sure it is okay. It definitely hurts now, but at the tip, which is nowhere near the Site of Impact. So perhaps it will recover well.
The course was pretty straightforward, hard to make a mistake. Uphill near and at the end, which was tough. I realized that getting good on hills takes running up hills, not machines that are supposed to simulate hills. So I'll be better at hills next week.
A tad warmer than it has been, around freezing or a few degrees above, and not too windy, so it wasn't too bad for running. And the lodge was a truly wonderful, lovely amenity.
Orienteering race 21:28 [5]*** 3.3 km (6:30 / km)
Lake Fairfax Medium Sprint. This one didn't go around the lake, and was more in the fields & picnic grounds. Same uphill finish, though.
Orienteering race 16:06 [5]*** 2.5 km (6:26 / km)
Lake Fairfax Short Sprint. Didn't take much rest after the Medium. Dave Onkst was starting when I arrived at the start; I thought about giving him a generous head start, then I figured, nah, he's way faster so it doesn't matter. And of course he was much faster, but with the open terrain I could see him a lot, which was a bit helpful in knowing which way to turn for the next control.
Happily, this course looped the opposite direction of the long & medium. Had several controls in common with one or both of the other courses, but they felt very different coming from the opposite direction.
Lots of fun! Hope the park folks eventually relent and let us get more than 15 meters into the woods (like they're nice, pristine woods. They're pretty crappy, actually!).

Body parts actually played fairly nicely together. Calf may hurt tomorrow, but felt fine running. Maybe it was just numb.

I was feeling quite tired at the end of this. Tried to push hard regardless. Kissy would be proud. ;-)
C • Of course 1

Cross training (recumbent exercise bike) 42:00 [2]
With Nadim sick, Max still nose-runny, and I still with a sore throat (but no more achiness), I figured I should do something a bit easy. Today the top of my left calf started hurting, and I figured it could be from the Versa Climber. Then it kind of morphed up to the lower back of the knee. It hurts walking, and this new (minor? I hope ... ) injury disturbs me. I hope it doesn't last long. Between that & the @#%$ toe, I'm just a mess.
I'm trying to decide if I should run the QOC sprints on Sunday. Guess I'll wait & see.
Read the new Runner's World.
Weights 4:00 [2]
Arm work on Nautilus equipment. I was going to stretch but just as I got off the bike a woman sat down on the only mat to stretch. So I did some weights instead.

Thursday Feb 8

Note
Everyone's a bit sick. Nadim & Max stayed home today; Nadim has a nasty cough and Max has a runny nose & congestion. I have a sore throat & some body aches -- good enough to go to work, but didn't want to work out. Hope I feel better tomorrow.

Cross training (elliptical (EFX)) 40:00 [2]
I'd decided I'd use the elliptical today, and when I got to the gym I saw a nice new one that looked pretty cool. It was only once I'd been on it for a minute or so that I noticed it said EFX. One more day and I wouldn't have had to ask Valerie what it was.
Forgot to bring a magazine. Read Reader's Digest.

Cross training (versa climber) 8:00 [3]
Jsut a little climbing fun.

Tuesday Feb 6

Stretching 5:00 [1]
While waiting for class to start.
Pilates 45:00 [3]
We had a substitute instructor today. My first impression was I didn't like her as much. But she turned out to be quite good, just in a different way. Sure felt the burn. Yowzah.
A bit disappointing that the class was so short though. (My abs & hips were happy.)

Monday Feb 5

Cross training (recumbent exercise bike) 37:00 [2]
At lunch at work. Toe is definitely hurting, more in running shoes where there's more bending.
I'm not happy about the toe. Exercise biking doesn't really hurt it though.
Cross training (versa climber) 8:00 [3]
Climbing climbing not getting anywhere. Felt this mostly in my hips.
Note
My US O' Team era is over. :-( That's what age & a crappy year (well, I had a nice excuse) will do to you.
I had a good 23-year run.
C • Congratulations! 5
Note
My left ankle is a bit sore, presumably from the minor twist on the frozen rutted trail on Saturday. Not too concerned about it (especially compared to the toe), but I am noticing it.
Why do motivation, free time, and health never seem to intersect any more?
