| Trail warm up/down 5:00 [2] | ||
| Jogging to the start with Spike. | ||
| Orienteering race 25:40 [4]*** | ||
| Umstead, Red W course. I wanted to focus on navigating and keeping my concentration. But right from the start my head wasn't there, and I missed the first control by about 2 minutes, just losing track of which ditch/reentrant I was in or crossing. Thought I'd then settle down but I missed 2 as well (a stupid error, as I look at what I did). Then we had a nice long road run, and that went fine.
Leaving 3 I wondered if I should take the trail to 4 or stay low. I thought "low" but getting up to the road lead me higher and I came out near the trail. So I took it. A short ways in I tripped and did one of those flailing balance checks, but recovered. Only a few steps later, I tripped again and this time I went down fast & hard--right onto my face! Not only was that a shock, it really hurt. I yelped in pain for many seconds before I pulled myself up and started brushing my face off. Joanne Sankus came up to me & I asked her if my face was bloody. No, just dirty, she said. I said I would be fine, she said something about walking it off, and I said yeah, and besides, the next control is right next to the finish if I have to quit. I walked a bit, thinking about my crummy ranking points, and worrying about picking up controls (as I was scheduled to do). Then I started jogging but that quickly hurt. I knew I'd also hit my knee but until then I didn't really think about it. Looked down, and through the huge hole I saw a huge egg on my kneecap and a lot of blood. That didn't bode well, and at that point it seemed clear to me I'd have to quit. Walked to the spectator control and headed to the finish. When I got there I suddenly felt better; my knee bent easily and didn't hurt. My hand hovered above the finish punch as I decided. Finally I made the right decision and punched it, signaling the end of my race. Within five minutes my knee was so stiff I couldn't bend it. Valerie had a good first aid kit so I cleaned it up and bandaged it. My only worry is whether I might need a few stitches. That's something to ponder tomorrow. The long drive home wasn't too fun, but it was tolerable. The knee hurts but my face hurts too! I had wondered if I broke my nose but I think probably not. Ah, the joys of orienteering. On the bright side: it was sunny & I had lots of time to chat with people; Nadim had a good run & moved up to 2nd in M45; Max had a great time with the other kids; Nadim took my place in the control pick-up group. Not a horrible day.

| Orienteering 15:30 [2]*** | ||
| Umstead St. Park. Putting out the last water control. Got up early, drove out to the trailhead for the park, jogged down the road, found the water, walked it in a hundred or two meters to the control, jogged back to the car. Back to the hotel by 8:15, where both Nadim & Max were still asleep. | ||

| Orienteering 10:49 [3]*** | ||
| Aborted start of the WRE. I was a pre-starter, non-competitvely for obvious reasons, and the real maps weren't at the start yet. No problem, I'd printed a set myself before leaving home. So I headed out, a bit sloppily. On the way to 2 I looked at the control descriptions and #2 wasn't what I'd set. And the feature it described wasn't on my map! I figured it had to be nearby where I'd originally set it so I tried running around and looking for it. Ha, that didn't work. Finally I figured this was a bad plan & I needed to get the correct map. Ran back through the start & parking lot (seeing Vlad on the way; he was concerned that there was an issue I'd found) & to the finish to end my run so I could go again. Meanwhile Vlad got me the correct map. This time includes all of this, up to the time I got back to the start. Nice little warm-up. | ||
| Orienteering race 51:07 [3]*** 4.3 km (11:53 / km) | ||
| Umstead, Women's WRE course. Okay, I'd set it and I'd put out a bunch of controls, but there were some I'd never been to, as Jan had put them out. So it wasn't as "easy" as it appeared. But I was also very tired from Friday's effort, and the hills, especially, took a toll. I walked up almost all of them once I crossed the road.
But I was also sloppy and made several mistakes. I was not concentrating well enough, for various reasons, and I needed to do better in this terrain. It was fun anyway, just to run my own course & see what the other women did. The weather couldn't have been better, and overall the event went smoothly and was a success. And Nadim was 3rd on M45 so a good day for us.

| Orienteering (control set) 3:23:00 [2]*** | ||
| Umstead St. Park, NC; Reedy Creek area. Control placement for Saturday's courses. I was so pleased that Jan Lien helped put out the controls, as I don't think I would have been able to do them all myself. He had put out 16 controls & stands (no e-punches, as we brought them with us) on Thursday, and on Friday he put out more complete sets plus some e-punch boxes on some of the controls he'd already placed. I did the rest. I'm not sure how many controls total I did; I'd have to add it up and I don't feel like doing that. More than half (there were 67 total).
The time I logged seems low because I was out just about the whole day (well, got to the park around 8:30 after stopping at Vlad's hotel to get the final map & the controls & stands) doing this. I also had to stop in the early afternoon to go to the hotel to pick up Nadim & Max and take them to the Sprint. I realized by late morning that the sprint wasn't going to happen for me and I was fine with that. Not my forte, especially after several hours in the woods. I usually stopped my watch when I was actually placing the control or otherwise not running/walking. Because the park is a bit overprotective and has very limited parking options, I had to lug the gear from the main parking lot (and one remote location for five of the red controls). Since Jan was going to be there later to help, I was instructed to leave the gear at the Start & then he could help himself. So I spent some time (during which I got eaten by annoying gnat-like bugs) sorting out two groups of controls to put out, 14 controls each. I miscounted control stands so I had to do one of the controls later. I'd been told that the club would deliver the water to somewhere on the road near the water stops (Vlad sent me a file of where those points on the road would be but I never looked at it...). I came across the water deliverers, and their park ranger escort (!) just as I was about to put out a yellow control that was a water stop. They saw me put out the control, in a field next to the dirt road they were driving on, and yet they hid the water jugs off in the woods. Luckily I'd kind of seen where they had been, otherwise I don't know if I'd have spotted it. The club guy showed me on the map where--vaguely--they'd left the water for the Brown control, but when I got up to that area, a parking lot near a camp, I couldn't find the water anywhere! I was getting quite frustrated. Part of that was the heat (ooh, 65 degrees!!), and part was being hungry. Finally, since it was the end of my first group of controls, I had an energy bar, foolishly having left my gatorade at the car, and went off to do loop two. After that was my long break to get Nadim & Max. Came back to find that Jan had left me just 14 controls, mostly with just e-punches needed. I was really pleased!! Yet, this group took me the longest. Partly that was because the controls were further apart & in the hilliest area, partly because I had to lug 12 gallons of water onto the course (most of which were never opened, of course!), partly because I had to run back to where the water for the Brown was. Because when I found the big stash of 10 gallons for two stops, I figured out the system: a large red ribbon was tied around a tree above the water stash. So I confidently went back to find the Brown stash & it was clear as day. Nowhere near I had been looking though. I didn't want to make multiple trips so I lugged each water stop's water in its entirety. The Red/Green stop had 6 gallons of water; the WRE stop had 4. Yowzah, that wasn't fun. Finished up by around 4:30, with just the second Red water stop (too far to run, & a pesky drive around) left to do. Went back to the Sprint area to gather my men & chat with the competitors. Beautiful day. Wednesday's forecast was completely wrong.

| Orienteering 45:56 [2] | ||
| Umstead State Park, NC. Putting out the e-punches for the model event. I was very happy to hear that *Vlad* had put out the controls & stands; all I had to do was add the e-punch boxes. This made it much faster as I didn't have to search around for a streamer. It went fairly well, though early on I overran a control badly. Felt nice to run on an unfamiliar o-map, after a long drive.
Rain held off, thankfully; felt a few sprinkles as I was running back to the car but the real rain hit around 9 pm. And was done by morning.

| Trail 46:05 [3] | ||
| The Potomac Heritage Trail from work, at lunchtime. Wore my GoreTex shoes again, a good choice as the north-facing trail was still snowy. Soft and a bit slippery, especially on the uphills, but not mushy. There were a few places, most notably on a big uphill, that were very muddy and slippery. That slowed me down a bit.
I was concerned that I didn't have the right clothes for the conditions (my running clothes are in Max's room and it's not always easy to get what I'm looking for in the dark without disturbing him ... no, it's not possible for me to plan ahead and get my clothes before he goes to bed!). Had a light-weight long-sleeve top and shorts. After some initial chills, I was fine. Of course. My toe mostly hurts from bending on uphills, so I was apprehensive on them. It really doesn't hurt in a classic way, just vaguely aches, unless I forget and curl my toes (OUCH!) or, like I did the other day at Max's gym class, I sit with my toes underneath me. Stupid toes.
Tuesday Feb 27 | ||
| Stretching 18:00 [1] | ||
| While waiting for Pilates class to start. 15 min after class was supposed to start, the teacher's escort came to tell us she hadn't shown up yet ... and thus probably wouldn't. We disbanded. I was tempted to just change back into my work clothes & go back to my desk, but instead ... | ||
| Cross training (recumbent exercise bike) 32:00 [2] | ||
| ... I decided to put my shoes on and do something, at least. Wasn't prepared with a magazine but there was an old Women's Health on the rack. Spun happily for 30+ minutes, nice & gentle.
Toe hurts worse. I'm concerned about the weekend (& the hours of control setting). Should be "interesting."
Monday Feb 26 | ||
| Cross training (stair climber) 25:00 [3] | ||
| For a change of pace, I used the stairclimber. Forgot to bring a magazine, but I had the Women's Health mag in my bag, so I read that. | ||
| Cross training (recumbent exercise bike) 22:00 [2] | ||
| Didn't feel like stretching or weights, but wanted to do a little bit more something. | ||
