| Hmm, whose log entry should I copy, Valerie's or Kris's? Either would work nicely.
So, quick recap: the three of us went to see the Gee's Bend quilts in Baltimore, joined by Valerie's mom. That was cool; I think it would have been an outing my mom would have enjoyed (and this is the time I miss her a lot, wanting to tellher about what I did ... and not being able to). We all had lunch at a nice little dive nearby, then the three of us headed down to Greenbelt (stopping at Starbucks for Kris's fix ... I couldn't believe she could drink coffee in that heat but she managed somehow) to set up the summer short series. I know it was hot but it really didn't feel bad in the woods. Now I was only walking (see note below), but even so, you'd think 100 degrees would feel awful. The map wasn't the best so I had to do a bit of checking around for one of the controls before I felt confident about placing it. I tried to set most of the controls pretty close to trails since it was a memory o' in the heat in Greenbelt. I picked the dinner location (V & K bailed ... as did Tim Gilbert, who had to drive back to Richmond -- hard to believe he & Mike Brooks came all the way up to DC for some sweaty o' training!). We used to eat there every Tuesday after our running club track workout; but it's gone more upscale, with tablecloths & ordering at the table & much higher prices. But otherwise it was nice.

| So my right ankle has been bothering me lately. I remember commenting on it in my log a few weeks ago but only in the last week or so it's gotten worse. It's actually not my ankle but right above the ankle bone. I was thinking Friday that perhaps it is a stress fracture, so I googled that and it did seem like that could be what I have. Then I talked to Dave Onkst and he thought it's more likely tendonitis; he says the place I have it is a "classic" tendonitis site. I googled it this morning and the place they mention is between the ankle bone & the Achilles; my aching isn't quite there, but I think Dave may be right nonetheless. Tendonitis seems more likely. At any rate, I'd already decided on Friday that I'd try taking 2 weeks off from running and see how that goes. Plus icing & vitamin I. | ||

| (rest day) | ||
| My plan for today was to get up early and get a run in, as thunderstorms were predicted for later in the day (and I wouldn't be able to workout at lunch due to work on the coed gym). But when I woke up, I felt too tired and it was very easy to just hit the snooze button and skip the run. I considered nordic tracking either after work or after dinner, but ultimately decided against that, too. Figured a rest day would be okay. My lower left back hurt during the sprints last night and it's still a bit tight today, plus some ongoing niggling hurts convinced me to just take it easy.
So Kissy I took your advice. ;-)
Wednesday Jul 4 | ||
| Orienteering race 8:11 [5]** 1.2 km (6:49 / km) | ||
| shoes: VJ Integrator | ||
| Mini sprint. I went after Eddie (who was quickly out of sight, despite the open fields). I was pretty sloppy, not reading ahead (which hurt me on #4 when I didn't see that I had to go left or right to get around the fence) & in one case misreading a trail so I wasn't where I thought I was. And I felt tired -- started out too fast and crashed. But it was pretty fun. | ||
| Orienteering race 29:28 [4]*** 3.43 km (8:35 / km) | ||
| shoes: VJ Integrator | ||
| Sprint at Fort Meade HS. I went after Valerie; we took different routes to #1 and I caught her right before we went into the woods to the control. But then she was right with me at #3 after I misinterpreted where the control would be (no control description and it was hard to tell exactly where the control was) and got on the wrong side of the fence & had to climb over.
I had trouble with #14, stopping a bit short and then drifting a bit low. Luckily Tim came by and led me to it. ;-) The whole time we were running, the sky was rumbling. The rain didn't come for a few more hours (and then it poured, making everyone who was planning on going to see the fireworks change their minds ... we weren't planning on that but the heavy rain did delay our departure home). Lots of fun, the running & the dinner & the hanging out.

| (rest day) | ||
| I had a hard time deciding what to do today: early-morning speedwork at the track, afternoon speedwork in the woods (anticipating an early release), or nothing. Finally I decided, partly based on my planned training for the rest of the week, to take a day off.*
As it turned out, we only got two hours off, not the hoped-for (and not-unprecedented) three hours, which would have made it tight to get to the woods, run, and get back in time for my massage at 4. And getting up early wasn't as enticing since we were up late (for me & Max, anyway) last night watching fireworks at our neighborhood park. And one other factor I considered was that I could use the time off work reloading software onto my computer. Still working on that. *This also gives Kissy a chance to catch up in workouts.

Monday Jul 2 | ||
| Cross training (recumbent exercise bike) 42:00 [2] | ||
| I wondered why there were so many women in the gym, many more than usual. Not right after New Year's, or any other obvious time. Then I remembered that today is the first day of the other gym's closure for 5 weeks of renovation or something. At least I was able to get on the machine I wanted. But someone had Fox News on and that was not conducive to good training. ;-) I tried to tune it out by focusing on my Runner's World. | ||
| Weights 8:00 [2] | ||
| Mostly 5lb weights for my arms/shoulders/wrists. Then did one machine for my legs. Then it was time to go. | ||
