| Event: QOC - Wheaton | ||
| Orienteering race 1:18:30 [4] *** 7.6 km (10:20 / km) | ||
| shoes: VJ Integrator | ||
| Red course at Wheaton Regional Park. Lots of green/thorns in Wheaton, along with a few areas of very nice woods. We started out in the less-nice parts and ended in the better areas. Lots of doglegs. I had no energy and had trouble pushing myself, especially early. Just no zip. I felt fat & out of shape (which I am...). Mostly fun anyway. | ||

| Brother Paul is in town (and by that I mean my brother, not some Franciscan priest or something). We didn't manage to get a run in, but we went to bagels & Home Depot; did some work around the house (Paul caught up on his email); and then when Max woke up from his nap, we drove downtown to fight the crowds & see the cherry blossoms. Lucked into a parking spot as someone was coming out, though it was a longish walk to the Tidal Basin. We went through the Franklin Roosevelt Memorial, which Max liked because of all the waterfalls & hunks of rocks to climb up on and jump down from. He wasn't too interested in the blossoms. We walked about a third of the way around the Tidal Basin before heading back to the car. Max's hands got cold (it was chilly) so he put them in his jacket pockets. We told him not to run, which is his inclination, and for a while he didn't. But then, inevitably, he ran, he tripped, and he fell on his face. He howled. Poor Maxie!! He got a small gash on his forehead & a couple on his upper lip and we had to put the dreaded bandaid on his forehead, which made him cry almost as much. Hard for us to see our boy in pain. | ||

Friday Mar 28 | ||
| Pilates 45:00 [2] | ||
| This was the make-up class for last session. Only about half of the regular group was in attendence (but also a couple women who weren't in the class; not sure how they managed that but who cares). I worked it honestly, making my abs & legs hurt. Yay. | ||
Thursday Mar 27 | ||
| Cross training (recumbent exercise bike) 47:00 [2] | ||
| Just some easy biking, as a recovery day after yesterday. I started reading the current issue of Women's Health. I don't remember much more about this workout. | ||
Wednesday Mar 26 | ||
| Cross training (rowing machine) 15:00 [2] | ||
| My plan for today was post-work speedwork in the woods, but I wanted to really get a good day in and wear myself out. So I went to the gym over lunchtime as usual. Started on the ERG. Today I went really easy. It's not hard at all when the thing is set at a very low number & I don't try to pull hard. Kind of fun, in fact. Watched CNN (again had to change the t.v. from Fox...) | ||
| Cross training (stairmaster) 10:00 [2] | ||
| Next, on to the Stairmaster. Just some easy stuff there, while still watching CNN. | ||
| Weights (Natilus) 15:00 [2] | ||
| Mostly did the machines (arms & legs), but then ended up with the 12.5 lb barbells to work the muscles I hadn't already worked.
Before I started I had to tell some rogue male who had wandered into the gym & was about to do some weight work that it was still women's hours. He expressed surprise, stating that he thought the single-sex hours were for the locker room only. C'mon, think that through! And then read the notes about it. At least he was polite & apologetic and left right away (and patiently waited in the hallway until 12:30).
| Woods run intervals 54:09 | ||
| shoes: VJ Integrator | ||
| It's been too long since I've run, too long since I've been in the woods, and definitely too long since I've done something resembling speedwork. Today I decided to combine all three. A beautiful day, warmer than forecast (around 70! Felt hot!), and I felt good too (though a tiny bit tired from my lunchtime workout ... but it's sometimes good training to workout while tired, I think, as it is kind of like the second day of an A meet). I drove out to Blockhouse for my workout. I had seen my Blockhouse map in my bag the other day and that put the idea in my head. It's got a lot of open woods, though also some big hills. I didn't really want to do a lot of hill work so I stayed on the ridges mostly. Wore just an elastic ankle brace and the ankle was okay.
My favorite workout: ladder in the woods. 1-2-3-4-5-4-3-2-1 min at about race pace with a half-time recovery. Good stuff.
| Note | ||
| First workday in the last 4 that I didn't work comp time. Can you imagine, management wants me to work overtime on a reference map! It's hot stuff. :-) I better get some kind of fine recognition.
My very kind production manager, Christina (who also quilts and also has a 3-year-old boy), brought me a big high-quality dark chocolate bar yesterday. Yummmm! I swear, I'm only eating a little each day. Meanwhile, my boss hasn't even bothered to wander down the hall to see the draft copy of my map I printed out (and gave, another copy, to the customer). Morale in the office is very low. Mine, at least, is pretty good. As long as people keep bringing me chocolate.

Tuesday Mar 25 | ||
| Cross training (recumbent exercise bike) 42:00 [2] | ||
| I really didn't feel like going to the gym and doing anything, so I consider it a victory that I got over my malaise and did something. But it was easy and relatively short. I just about finished off Mother Jones.
Didn't want to do any weights since I did them yesterday.
Monday Mar 24 | ||
| Cross training (rowing machine) 12:00 [3] | ||
| I decided that last week's foray into rowing (not a first, but it's been a while) didn't hurt my foot, so I should do some more. This is hard; no wonder Hillary is so buff & strong.
I turned on the tv above the ERG; it was tuned to Fox News & I had to scroll through dozens of channels to find CNN. (Lots of foreign-language channels to choose from and dismiss.)
| Cross training (recumbent exercise bike) 35:00 [2] | ||
| And then onto the bike for some easy spinning.
Continued reading Mother Jones.
| Weights 5:00 [3] | ||
| The usual stuff. | ||
