| Orienteering race 1:14:40 [4] *** 5.9 km (12:39 / km) | ||
| shoes: Jalas | ||
| Red course at Balls Bluff. A new area added on to the north was absolutely wonderful -- about as open as any woods get around here. But, as Don D warned me, the map *is* a work in progress. Like the fight along the field that isn't shown (and appeared imprenetable) ... but really, it was okay. The area is hilly (the new part, not so bad), but interesting with lots of trails & thus route choice. I enjoyed it mentally but physically I didn't have much to run on today. Right from the start my legs felt tired & when I was going uphill I had no motivation to even try to run so I walked. Missed #3 a bit when I didn't see the middle rootstock on the map - covered by the control circle - and bigger mistake on 9 because I went high around the reentrants but dropped one spur early and ended up having to do what I was trying to avoid in the first place. :-(
I wore my *new* Forerunner 405 (a Mother's Day gift from my very generous hubby :-). It took me some time to figure out how to work it. And even more time to figure out how to get all the data downloaded. I've now managed that but I still have some stuff to figure out re. how to be able to synch it up with an o' map, etc. (Haven't found a place to export a .gpx file, for example.) But I'll get there (probably with lots of help from DH.) Some light rain while running, not bad at all; good running temps. Later the rain got heavier & the temps dropped. We've really been getting a monsoon here lately. (In fact, my father-in-law said the weather didn't depress him because it reminds him of his youth in Bangladesh.)

| Road run warm up/down 6:00 [3] | ||
| Mostly warm-up, mostly with Mark, the other person who's run all 18 of these office races. We caught up on each other's injuries; he said he thought he'd be competitive in his age group, & I said I thought I wouldn't.
Light rain, so getting used to being wet.

| OMS 18th Annual 5k. Twice around the compound. The uphills on this course are a lot more obvious; the flats are evidently just very gently trending downhill -- there's almost nowhere where it's obvious you're going down. And two loops: never my favorite type of course. But it wasn't bad. Much better than last year's hot, sunny weather: mid-60s & light rain. Felt actually pretty good. So I can't attribute my slowest time to the weather!
I had low expectations because of the strep & the tendinitis, and I didn't really want to go out too hard. But I started too far back, because the others from my office were there, and so I (and most of the guys, two of whom beat me) had to weave through the crowd ... most people are really bad at seeding themselves (not that I did a good job of it today) ... sometimes hopping up on the sidewalk to get around some slowpokes. Luckily that part only lasted for a quarter mile or so. Then up around past the daycare ... where there were no little voices cheering us on. The first year of the race I had no idea who was doing all that cheering (I was so focused :-) until I saw the photos later. Passing the start/finish after the first loop, there were a few folks from my office cheering, but nothing like normal (when much of the office would come out to cheer -- helps that our office is quite close to the race start). At mile 2 I noticed my split was faster than mile 1 (8:12 mile 1; 8:08 mile 2), but the topography is a bit easier too; still, I was encouraged and decided to push it a little. The ankle didn't hurt, my throat wasn't bothering me, and the rain felt good. When I finished the tag-pullers told me I was first in my age group. That turned out to be true. Wow, not a strong age group. It's a pathetic time for a road 5k--I know that--but, hey, that's how it goes. I'm happy the overall winner is 5 years younger than I am (of course, every time she runs the race she wins overall so it hardly matters ... she's still quite fast). Most people took their free lunch into the building to eat. If you've seen any Agency movies or documentaries, this is the main entrance, with the stars on the wall & the logo in the floor ... and here are all these wet, bedragled runners sitting on the floor eating barbecued pork sandwiches. It was pretty amusing. While we were inside the awards ceremony began without any notice. Many of the winners were absent (including me, until a co-worker ran in to get me). Given the weather, can't blame them. No Cartos-Designers challenge this year. We think it's because the organizing designer couldn't get entered before the field filled. The cartos rocked, anyway--I wasn't the first one, which is awesome. Fun. Here's the course.

| Went to work today but decided against doing anything in the gym. Not really feeling full of energy yet. Throat is still very sore. I'm enjoying soft foods. :-)
Tomorrow is our office's annual 5k race, which of course I must run. So, I have strep throat, a bad ankle, and there's 90% chance of rain. It's gonna be great.

| I walked to Max's daycare, carrying the handle to his bike trailer so I could convert it to a stroller, as well as a new velcro catch game for us to play. He was pretty enthused about that, and, surprisingly, climbed into his stroller and rode to the playground (vice walking/pushing it himself, as is typical). We played the game for a short while -- we both need some practice -- then he wanted to play on the playground. After about 20 minutes of that we walked home. Warm day (80s). Still home from work, throat still plenty sore but the amoxocillin has eliminated my fever. Don't feel great but better. | ||
