Note
(sick)
Sick. I feel like I have strep throat again. :-(

Saturday Jun 21

Orienteering 27:14 *** 3.4 km (8:01 / km)
ahr:163 max:185
Summer Short Series: Sprint on U of Md campus map. Corinne Porter was the host. This was lots of fun, with a bunch of direction changes & route choices around buildings, etc. The map could use more detail (e.g., the brick walls that weren't on the map) and the contours were not really obvious (same color as the sidewalks), but those are minor quibbles. I started out jogging because 1) I'm now terribly out of shape and 2) I didn't know how my ankle would feel. But by the time I was leaving 4 Dasa had just about caught up to me (I assume she started 2 min after, as I think that is the start intefval Corinne was using). That made me pick up the pace. I never shook Dasa, and probably helped her out a few times. But it was good to get pushed a bit ... even though my body wasn't really ready for it. HR got much higher than I expected.
My ankle felt okay throughout the run. It's now a bit achy/sore, so I'll have to see how I feel tomorrow.

After the run I hung my feet in the reflecting pool, which felt great. Max & Alex had been playing around the water the whole time. Nadim watched them and took pictures.
A bunch of us then went to Corinne's for hot dogs & hamburgers out on her deck. A perfect evening for chilling outside & chatting. Very nice!

Friday Jun 20

Stretching 10:00 [1]
Mostly seated yoga poses but a few other things too since I had plenty of time.
Pilates 45:00 [2]
I've missed a few weeks lately, and this was the second and last make-up session before the summer break. So I wanted to be sure to make it. I felt unbalanced. And a bit weak.
Note
Acupuncture again today. Started on my stomach; pretty standard stuff done. Then I turned over. They put two towels over me to keep me from getting cold, and then positioned two heat lamps over my hands/arms & feet, where I had needles. I also had a needle in the top of my skull, which surprised me so much when he put it there I made a quiet exclamation. "For energy," he told me. (Didn't seem to work...)

So I'm laying there with a bunch of needles in my foot & both legs (feet is a painful place, in general, FYI), plus my hands & crooks of my elbows. They close the door and leave me to rest. It was at least 20 minutes, maybe longer, before they came back, and I was getting hotter & hotter & hotter. Not so bad that I was going to call out and get someone to come rescue me, but quite unpleasant all the same. When they finally came in and moved the heat lamps, it felt so much better. They realized how hot I was when one started massaging my arm & it was sweaty.

Ankle seems to be responding slowly to the treatment; it's felt better the past few days. With Nadim being out of town next week, scheduling is tricky and I was trying to figure out how I'd manage a Tuesday appointment. (Friday is okay because Max's daycare is closed, I took the whole day off, and signed Max up for a 3-hour "summer camp" at his gym. Originally I thought, Whee! Some free time for me! But it's all going to go to needle therapy instead.) But I was told it's up to me, if my ankle is improving, I could drop to once a week. No brainer. So no appointment until next Friday. We'll see how the ankle is doing.

Thursday Jun 19

Cross training (recumbent exercise bike) 37:00 [2]
In the coed gym (which means no chatting about thong incidents ...). I started reading the newest Mother Jones. Always uplifting.
Weights (Nautilus) 20:00 [2]
Legs & arms ... and I tried a new (to me) Nautilus machine called "the core." It took me some time to figure it out (luckily it had step-by-step instructions right on it). Basicallly, you twist your middle left & right. It's okay.

Wednesday Jun 18

Cross training (recumbent exercise bike) 47:00 [2]
CNN Headline News on tv, Mother Jones to read. Eyes going buggy -- I've been spending the last several work days (since Friday) deleting 1-minute tick marks from my map (no, there's no more efficient way to do it that any of us can think of); it's been very tedious and annoying and on top of that, really bothering my eyes. They've been getting worse & worse, which bugs the #$%!@#* out of me, but today I finally resorted to using the magnifying glasses I've had on my desk for months (1.0 magnification). Well, I have to admit, that was better. I'm tired of fuzzy stuff though. I blame it all on this map.

By 9 a.m.I finally finished "step 1" of creating the 1-minute ticks on the map and lept into "step 2" (which consists of more deleting...). This step is taking longer, and I don't have the breaks while the software is working (less than a minute for it to go through the script I wrote, but I'm not patient enough to sit through that, so yesterday I'd start the script, switch to my internet machine, read some AP [or CNN.com or MSNBC.com], then switch back & continue on). Mind-numbingly boring. Got in such a daze doing this that I suddenly looked at the clock & realized I'd stayed 17 minutes late. Just a little donation to the cause.

Ankle hurts.
Weights (Dumbbells) 5:00 [2]
Back to free weights for my arms, wrists, & shoulders. Had time to do more; didn't feel like it.

While I was doing this, there was a story on the news (which I missed since I was too far away to see/hear it) apparently about some woman who is suing Victoria's Secret because she bought a thong that she believes is defective or poorly designed or something -- she somehow got hit in the cornea by her thong (how that can be VS's fault, I have no idea). So when I was in the dressing room later, four of us were laughing about this story. Sounds like user error to me...

Note
(rest day)
Both acupuncture and massage today. Guess which one I enjoyed more.

The acupuncture session -- for which I took 2 hours of SL this morning -- lasted over an hour and a half. I thought only the first session would last that long and then they'd just treat my ankle and be done with it. Not so. Same routine as last time: disrobe, put on paper dress, lie face down. They then massaged and cupped my back & simultaneously did the same to my ankle, then came the needles. Finally it was time to turn over (hoped it would be over at that point...) and there was more of the same on the legs, plus electric stimulation on my ankle. That was a bit unpleasant at times.
Well, at least now I know how long to expect it to go.
Massage was a lot more predictable.
No time to work out with this weird schedule. Nadim & I both negatively affected our weights by having another hunk each of Mrs. Field's cookie cake (Father's Day gift :-). Max preferred Oreos.

Monday Jun 16

Cross training (recumbent exercise bike) 42:00 [2]
I finished up Running Times & flipped through some women's mag that was on the rack. So forgettable, I have no recollection what it was.
The tv was on when I came in, tuned to CNN or something else reputable, but then someone came in and switched it to The Price is Right. I thought, c'mon, are you for real? But apparently it mattered to her, and it didn't to me, so I kept quiet.
Weights (Dumbbells) 2:00 [2]
Got a late start to the gym & had almost no time.
Note
6 happy years, celebrated with dinner out ... with Max ... which meant, not much adult conversation! We went to a fondue place, which was pretty interesting. The restaurant had moved from Rockville to Gaithersburg, which we weren't aware of, so we were late in getting there, and fondue is a drawn-out affair, so we were late leaving there, too. Max was pretty well-behaved given the circumstances.
My favorite part of the dinner was (surprise ;-) the chocolate fondue for dessert. I hardly ever have dessert at restaurants, but for special occasions, I have to!
