| Hiking 1:00:00 [1] | ||
| We spent most of the day at the Montgomery County Agricultural Fair. We were there over six hours, much longer than Nadim & I expected. We covered almost all of the fair (of course, it's much smaller than the MN State Fair, the last one we went to and my main reference point). Max really enjoyed the rides, the farm machinery, and the food. (We really didn't overdo it on the fair food.) He liked the farm animals but wasn't too excited by them. Oh, and the fire truck; he loved the fire truck (and he got another firefighter hat, as he did at last year's MN state fair).
We even wandered through the building with the baked goods & sewing stuff, including some quilts. I could totally do that. (Not the baked goods, but the quilting.) Not too hot, nice breeze, threatening rain clouds (but no rain) later. We ran into Max's soccer coach & her family at the Boy Scout rope bridge.

| Hiking 30:00 [1] | ||
| A very different SSS today: a handful of us (Nadim, Kathleen, Jan, & the kids - minus Alex) met Marc, a guy who is running a program of non-native invasive plant removal in Maryland. He'd been in touch with Greg L & Dave L and realized that orienteers would be a great asset in the quest to find & eliminate the non-natives, as we're out in the woods a lot. So we went to Little Paint Branch Park in Beltsville, and essentially went for a nature hike led by Marc, who was constantly pointing out plants & engaging the kids. We started out on a paved trail, then headed into the woods. Marc pointed out an eradicated patch from last year, and noted that natives were growing up in the spot where they'd killed the non-natives. In the woods, he found our quest, the wavyleaf basketgrass. It's distinctive, though low to the ground (I'm not sure I'm going to notice it while running). Max pulled out the first one, then Marc made sure all of us pulled out one ourselves. Then we went to another area, spread out, and pulled weeds for a while. Marc was repeatedly telling us to hurry up, it was going to get dark (it was 5:30!!). On our way back to the parking lot, we saw a couple big plots of Japanese stiltgrass, so we stopped to pull out a bunch of that. Marc & another woman who was with us (never identified, but she said she'd been out since 8 a.m. pulling non-natives) stayed behind after we all were worn out. Kathleen had already gone with the kids to some exercise equipment that they'd eyed on the way in.
Overall, this was a really good outing. The weeds are easy to spot, the cause is noble (whether you believe its goal -- total eradication -- is possible or not), and I got a sense of accomplishment after pulling out every plant. Marc would like to have another session with more QOCers (especially mappers & course-setters) and suggested the Sunday of Labor Day weekend. I don't know how many people will be available that day (Fair Hill rogaine, Labor Day weekend, day after our final '08 SSS . . .), but I'll send out an email and see. It's worthwhile to do. After the woods outing, Kathleen, Jan, Nadim, Big Max, Nicole, & Little Max & I went to IHOP for dinner. That was fun, as always, but the kids do tend to get rambunctious.

| Cross training (recumbent exercise bike) 45:00 [2] | ||
| Very easy ride at lunchtime. I went easy because I was tentatively planning on doing some woods running after work. I ultimately decided not to (and I guess I can come up with excuses but probably the truth is that I just didn't feel like it).
Finished both Running Times and Womens Health.

| Cross training (recumbent exercise bike) 40:00 [2] | ||
| Slept in today, until 6 :-), then got up & showered & dressed in workout clothes. I got to the gym at work around 7:20 & hopped on a recumbent. Continued reading Running Times. Lots of stuff about the Olympics, which plays right into my anticipation. I'm still excited about the Olympics, which apparently is a passé emotion. | ||

| On the way home from class today, I stopped at Fort Marcy (another park that is accessible by car only when traveling north on the GW Parkway). I mapped most of this park several years ago, hoping we could someday use it for some o' training events, but got some negative vibes about that from a ranger I ran into there once. Today I found that much of the once-beautiful, open woods are now jungly. I think part of that is due to downed trees from storms, which allowed lots of new growth in the woods. There have always been some thick areas around the earthworks. Of course, when I was mapping it was not summer, and that may have something to do with it, too.
Again, not a lot of energy for this run. But the park is so small I ran over all of it, some parts more than once. And then I was done. Hot, low 90s, though the humidity wasn't too bad. Ankle a bit achy.

| Yesterday Max said he wanted to go to the "racing track" today after school. He mentioned it again when I picked him up, so we stopped by the high school track -- which we drive past every day -- on the way home. He wanted to run around the track, just once. He didn't want me to run with him. He started out well, but after less than 100 meters he stopped, saying all around the track was a long way, and he might run out of energy. He kept going, walking and running as he felt like it. Then he was more interested in running the stadium steps (he did that three times). He told me *I* needed to run around the track, very fast (!!). So I figured, what the heck, I'd do a 400. It felt hard. I wasn't wearing my running shoes (I had on my walking shoes, which are old running shoes, so not too bad) but I still had my running clothes on. I haven't done any track stuff in over a year. Felt like it, too! After a few minutes rest, Max told me I needed to go around again ("Why aren't you running?" "Recovery," I told him). So I went again. This time it felt a bit easier, actually, but was a few seconds faster. I didn't actually take my splits, just looked at my watch. So the times are probably slightly off.
Splits: 1:50, 1:48. Not so good. But a fun outing at the track with Max! He told us later he didn't like the running: "Not so much." Maybe that will change.

| Cross training (recumbent exercise bike) 42:00 [2] | ||
| In the morning, before class. Got to the gym around 6:40 -- much busier this time of day than at lunchtime (and there are guys . . .). But no problem getting on a bike. I started reading Running Times, one I planned to leave in the rack -- Max, for some unknown reason, has been receiving it for a couple months, always in a bag with an "invitation to subscribe" -- as I have my own copy and this one doesn't have a mailing label.
Didn't want to work up much of a sweat as I'd already showered and didn't want to have to again. Mission accomplished.
| Weights (Dumbbells) 5:00 [1] | ||
| The 12.5 and 10 lb dumbbells were missing (I later saw them in the hallway with some dude who was not, at the time, using them). Rather than go up to 15 lbs, I went down to 8 lb. Yay! It seemed so easy. So I did more reps than usual.
Then I washed up, changed, stopped at the Dunkin' Donuts in the cafeteria for a bagel & large hot tea, walked to my car & made someone's day by vacating a close-in space, drove to the post office to mail off documents for the mortgage company, and drove to Alexandria for my class. Still enough time to read some of the paper, enjoy my tea, and read some AP. Classes: they're like vacation!

| I didn't get all the chiggers off on Saturday. Very itchy. | ||

| Trail 36:22 [2] | ||
| I'm in a class in Alexandria most of this week. If I were running roads these days, I would happily run the Mt Vernon trail that goes right behind the classroom building and near the river; I've run it before after classes. But I'm not doing that these days. So I stopped at Theodore Roosevelt Island on the way home for a nice little trail run. Last time I'd been there was for the urban adventure training event I did with Kissy & vmeyer. I think it was hotter today, but it wasn't too bad on the island, which is wooded & shady.
I knew that Linthicum runs here regularly from work, so I wasn't too surprised to see him heading toward me as we were both running on the boardwalk. Twice in three days: that doesn't happen much anymore. We stopped to chat briefly. We agreed we probably wouldn't be out there on the trails at the same time tomorrow, as the forecast is for 96. He will probably run earlier; I think I'll go in to work early and go to the gym before heading to my class. (A day off is the only other alternative, and that's not a good idea!) My energy & enthusiasm waxed & waned. I think the snack break in the afternoon (an EEI standard practice) affected my blood sugar, and not in a good way. I've felt worse. Ankle was aching a bit this weekend. It's still better than it was two or three weeks ago, so I'm still optimistic.
