running warm up/down (trails) 8:00 [2]
Guessing at the time. Warm-up for both sprints, to the remote starts.
orienteering race (sprint) 18:00 [5] *
Easy course - which meant I had to run hard. Generally did, but I did slow and go the long way twice to avoid large poison ivy patches.
orienteering race (sprint 2) 25:00 [4] ***
Well, some was advanced, some was very easy. My legs were tired, so it was nice that it was more technical. Sam very nicely let me try her large magnifier, and it took me a few controls to adjust (including one error, partly due to not reading the control description, but also due to not having the hang of the magnifier yet). Probably lost about 4-5 minutes total, maybe less. A little poison ivy avoidance this time too.
As to the magnifiers:
Flip-down: pros- really easy to read the map and can see a large area clearly, also helps when reading control codes on arm
cons- doesn't stay in place, annoying on my head (added to my hair, which is already annoying), and my eyes take a few seconds to adjust back to distance vision, during which I have to stay still or I risk running into things.
Compass magnifier: pros-right there where I need it, don't notice it when I'm not using it, no adjustment of eyes for distance vision/looking at feet
cons- doesn't cover as much area, does not help me read control code numbers on my arm (and I can't read them without some help), glare from sunlight, have to tip it at an angle to avoid glare, will it get smudges??
Still to try: sport goggles/glasses with magnifiers.
No verdict yet.
