orienteering race (long) 1:05:00 [4]

A great long course. I am out of practice with route choice having run so many short courses lately. Decided to go through to number 2, but then it was so trashy that I bailed to the trail. It made the attack much easier though, so I think it was worth the lost time on route.

At the start of the long leg, 5, I hadn't made a plan and I took a long time standing there - maybe even a minute - looking at left, right and straight. Glad I did, as right had not been my first instinct, but then I realized that there really was very little climb, and the attack was so easy from the trail bend. It was gorgeous running!

Not sure where I lost time on number 6 - I didn't have a specific error. Must just have been slacking off the pace a bit.

Perhaps most proud for nailing number seven. Vague, flattish stuff is not usually my forte.

Pushed as hard as my legs would go at the end. Definitely glad I hadn't run red!

orienteering race (middle) 34:00 [3]

Didn't have any actual errors, except that I couldn't see through my magnifying glasses after number 3 or 4. I finally took them off for good on the way to 7 and just simplified as best I could. I could see the marshes and the larger contour features. If I stopped, stood still, held the map at arms length and squinted, I could read a little more. Not really possible to see the detail in the circle, so I was quicker on the controls on larger features (swamps) and slower on the point features. But it was nice to feel my compass and simplification work was in good shape!

Not sure what to do about rain in the future. Perhaps I'll have to look into the one contact possibility.

orienteering race (sprint) 17:11 [4]

Not used to the warm, humid weather. Sitting in the car all morning probably didn't help either. I was mostly okay, but my brain was not completely on. Started heading from 8-14, then 'corrected' and started heading from 8-13, finally got myself on route to 9. Then did the same again: started navigating from 10-11, knew I was going to go past 12 on the way, but then headed for 12. Splits also show an 'error' on 2. I think I had a tiny hesitation in the circle, but really I think my legs were just slow on that one!
