orienteering 40:03 [3] 2.78 mi (14:24 / mi) +15m 14:10 / mi
ahr:146 max:174

Official time 39 something. So much easier to be under 10 min per km when there are no hills! Super fun today. In a pack of 4 women, we didn't talk, but it was still more personable than competitive. Long easy run for the last few split us by running speed. Went essentially straight, straight and straight in terms of route choice. I led a fair amount, but definitely gained confidence being with others. The one time I was unsure it definitely got me to keep going without hesitation. (It was a long leg to a trail ... but it seemed to take forever! ) But it felt great to lead a lot and to be identifying features easily and accurately. It all made sense to me. Wish we had a few more days!

Hiking warm up/down 15:00 [1]

Wk/jog to the start. Not feeling spiffy, but it was fine when racing.

running warm up/down 13:26 [1] 0.96 mi (14:00 / mi) +14m 13:24 / mi
ahr:105 max:128

Jogging and walking. Was a bit longer, just didn't start the watch. Feeling ok, except for my lower back on the left side.

orienteering race 31:33 [3] 2.0 mi (15:46 / mi)
ahr:139 max:162

Finally it all made sense today! I was very careful to maintain map contact, and use my compass. Felt good to be asked for help twice and be able to tell them the exact spot (both were young teenagers). Stayed calm and steady, with a few hesitant moments, but just to confirm. Back was only painful on the run in (and after). 19th (not sure if that is final), behind by 7:54. Felt much better than the first 2, and even smoother than yesterday.

Smoother today, and things were making more sense. One error of 1 or 2 minutes, when I couldn't see the feature (rock) that was part of my planned attack point. But everything else checked out, and I was exactly where I had thought I was! A few hesitant moments, but it was moments rather than whole legs. Was seeing the contours well, even the form lines, and conpass was solid. So fun!

orienteering race 56:19 [3] 3.59 mi (15:41 / mi) +55m 14:58 / mi
ahr:136 max:170

Mistake on the first. Really not reading the vegetation well at all. Stood for ages on a very distinct knoll which I was convinced was yellow. It wasn't. Had a chat with a British woman about how different it was than anything we were used to. She knew it was white not yellow,, though,, so she was a step ahead of me. I was so not-confident that I was looking at places on the map far from the route. In fact I was only a little off, and very near the control. So a combination of lack of confidence and stubborn thinking (yellow). Felt like a training session mentally, which is actually probably exactly what I needed. Decided to ignore veg and marshes and focus on contours. Things went better after that. Other large mistake was jumping ahead in my mind after refolding my map on a trail. Got horribly confused for a bit, and lost a fair amount of time until I realized. Duh. Decided to "restart" in my mind, and was much better for the rest of the course. Not good time wise though. Still, it is great terrain and I am enjoying the challenge!

Event: ORingen 2022

10 AM

orienteering race 50:53 [3] 2.98 mi (17:04 / mi) +33m 16:31 / mi
ahr:143 max:171

Remembered to start and stop the Garmin, so the time is fairly accurate. Very hesitant, and not reading the vegetation ws. Compass work shaky. Some legs were better than others. Lost more than 10 minutes, including general sloppiness on the late ones. Never felt like I was running hard. But oh the 1:7500 scale is wonderful!
