Running - off road race (Piercefield Park) 39:41 [5] 8.24 km (4:49 / km) +235m 4:13 / km
slept:4.0 (sick) shoes: inov8 Mudclaw300 Blk/Gn2

Worked from home today, and mostly feeling good so went to the race - quite a few FoDAC had dropped out so looked like I'd be needed for the team, even if I'd be struggling...

Overall, pretty wet and horrible conditions - both in terms of in the air and the ground. By some margin the worst conditions I've raced in here as the WVW was slippy as hell, sodden, muddy, and those were the grippy bits - tree roots has no grip at all and would slide straight away. Getting very cold waiting for the start too, and noticed the cold rain against me for some of the run.

Not expecting a strong race so didn't start right at the front. Actually got a reasonable start despite lots of people weaving around - and once they stabilised their direction I was passing. On my own for the flat section in front of the mansion with a group not far ahead and assumed, with my ankle and struggles on rocky/rooty ground - wouldn't catch up. Unfortunately not - overtook 1 quite quickly but not enough speed differential to pass the others until near the top. Pace wasn't that slow though, but was worried about getting caught on the really rough bits - which I had to stop and walk. Tried to gain a place by taking the steep route up the scramble, but didn't pay off as there really wasn't any grip at all. Did close the gap right down to be on the shoulder of the last, and with it being wider was able to pass both very quickly :-)

Had been coughing quite a lot through this section, and making hard work of running. Once at the top was against the wind and heading down so could start feeling unsettled stomach. Held the places I gained, and got going again after the gate crossing disrupted flow. There was a fast person right behind me for a section - who I'd just passed whilst they stopped to tie up shoe laces. Clear space in front of me for the water splash - which wasn't even knee deep. Just held on for the steeper slipperier descent down to WVW but surrendered on the rickety gate as I knew the rocks just after would be a walk for me.

Turns out I didn't need to worry about the place - even if I am bad at running on really rough surfaces, I outclassed this guy (and the two further in front) over this section. Ankle on the right side of luck many times. Got a last overtook immediately after the photographer (600 yards to go), and knew that I wouldn't be challenged up the hill. Not quite close enough to catch the next people along, and the breathing/coughing was a bit more pronounced when trying harder.

Managed 20th place and only 40s behind Dan Sandford. Given I'm nowhere near 100% well, am happy with that. Also quite pleased my average mins/k were ever so slightly faster (1s/k) than the previous 2 night runs here - both in much better conditions.

Plan for rest tomorrow (but actually go into work) and then XC on Saturday - might be feeling a bit better by then.
