Orienteering race (NWO Cherhill Down) 52:42 [4] 7.38 km (7:08 / km) +260m 6:04 / km
shoes: inov8 Roclite295 (1)

Felt the effects of running yesterday and taking the direct route to the start (75m climb in 200m...) so had no energy for this - most notable on 3-4-5.

Dudley started 2 or 3 mins ahead of me so I was encouraged to catch site of him at 7, not passing him until just under 13. "Ran" much stronger from 7 onwards.

Didn't enjoy the sheer slope descent into the final control, especially with the wet grass offering no grip. Found the run in to the finish quite a struggle - the climb on the last 50m was quite noticeable...

Note

Looking at my GPS logs, this month I've done exactly the same distance of orienteering and same distance of "running" as I did in October last year, yet this year I've done it in three hours less time. Hopefully that means I'm getting faster...

Overall, I've now recorded as many hours on my GPS this year as I did in all of last year 85km more distance. If I'm faster than I was, it may explain why my attackpoint training hours keep going down!

Running race (Ashton Court Parkrun) 23:07 [5] 5.0 km (4:37 / km) +100m 4:12 / km
shoes: Saucony ProGrid Triumph 7

Good to see lots of orienteers out today - at least 2 Tims, Mark Burley, Paul and Caroline, me, Duncan, 2 Manns and some lady in an EUOC top.

Didn't feel too good before the run so expected little. Kept with Tim L for most of the climb and we seemed to have caught Mark up quite a bit by the half way point. Apart from slowing down briefly on the steep bit by where the gravel track flattens on the golf course, I seemed to be doing the climb at 10kph or higher, so quite pleased.

They left me on the downhill though - a consequence of the Stoke Bishop race from May is that I cannot just let myself go like I used to - just couldn't get myself above 16kph on the sweeping tarmac track. Was faster after it flattened out but 500m of sprint effort to finish off left me metaphorically dead at the end.

Fastest 5k pace since July, and the course I did then was much flatter and I'm pretty sure was only 4.8km long. So, today was probably my actual 5km PB - ought to manage 21.30ish on a flat one.

Duncan and Tim seem to have given Mark the idea of getting us rubbish M21s to Jukola next year. We'll see if anything more comes of it...

Note

I suppose I should thank SOC for putting my start time for the November Classic nowhere near any other runner going from Bristol. Seems that everyone either starts an hour before me or 45 minutes after. Very convenient for lift sharing...

Running (BOK Training Run) 59:25 [4] 10.73 km (5:32 / km) +50m 5:25 / km
shoes: Saucony ProGrid Triumph 7

Quite an enjoyable run around the maze that is Thornbury - GPS comes into its own just to show where we went!

Wasn't going to make it an easy run for Charles tonight but the downside is that I was pushing myself quite hard. He didn't get away from me and for the bit of extended running - 1.4km - I was leaving him behind for the last 200 yards.

If I end up being the fastest running on a Tuesday night, something's wrong. But then, next week I'll probably be struggling to keep up on the tarmac as I had been for the previous three weeks...
