Note
(rest day)

Shins been hurting all day today - were fine yesterday. Consoling myself with the gain in ranking points - only 100 points or so from the top 1000! Have gone up 200 points (and 200 places) in the last 9 months so there is still hope that I will get there

Orienteering race (BADO Pamber Forest) 1:06:40 [4] 9.2 km (7:15 / km) +60m 7:01 / km
shoes: Addidas Swoops

Blue course. Generally ok but a few mistakes made through wrong paths, wrong route choices, very hidden controls etc.

Overshot 4 as couldn't see it, or the tiny feature from a distance of a couple of yards. Long route choice to 5 to avoid brashings. Straight line to 6, battling through head high bracken only to find a nice path along the fence...

Lost a good few minutes trying to find 8, whilst within the circle. Found it just as a group of at least 10 appeared and then ran with them until 17. 17 I think was unfair - a small depression marked on the edge of a patch of "broken ground" - there was no definition of where one ended and the next began.

Went to 18 on autopilot so found myself heading down the wrong path. Corrected with difficulty as my rubbish swoops couldn't provide sufficient grip for me to gross a big earth bank. Rest ok.

Not too disappointed with today's run - 6 min or so of mistakes. First time of trying out a thumb compass and having map in left hand: will take some getting used to.

Running - off road race (Worcester Parkrun) 21:51 [4] 5.0 km (4:22 / km) +30m 4:15 / km
shoes: inov8 Roclite295 (1)

Stopped off for worcester parkrun on way to see parents. Didn't try too hard as wanted to save some energy for the WNL. Everyone started off fast but I was comfortably overtaking them on the first lap.

Towards end of first lap a small 12 year old girl overtook me so my aim then was to match her pace for the remainder and go for the sprint finish - started 500 yards from the finish.

Knocked half a minute off my previous PB and could quite easily have gone faster if I had wanted. GPS says 4.9km as they now better mark the route (was 4.85km before). They are still adamant that it is 5km though and as it's a race I'm not going to do extra loops to make up the distance...

Noted when stretching beforehand that my right ankle still feels a little unhappy from the "safe" stream crossing point at the November Classic. Didn't give up on me this time but had been threatening to earlier in the week.

Orienteering - Night race (WNL Frith Wood) 55:42 [3] 4.0 km (13:56 / km) +185m 11:19 / km
shoes: inov8 Roclite295 (1)

Didn't expect to be doing well on Frith Wood. It's fair to say it met my expectations.

S-48-49-52-56-58-65-57-53-68-66-43-41-F - 230 points

Brashings among the worst I've encountered when orienteering. The first four controls were un-runnable, same for 65.

Lost time on 49, not helped by control description and contours being wrong. 52 in wrong place but not a problem as on the path. Big time loss on 56 - not happy with the map here when the vegetation is completely different to as mapped. Much as though I shouldn't be harsh on mapper Brian Hughes, I don't think "Vegetation mapped with broad brush. Use to aid route choice rather than for fine navigation" is good enough for night-o.

2 minutes or so lost on 58 - entirely my fault I suspect. Got 65 and 57 fine but think the platform is mapped in the wrong place relative to the path. Was pleased to find 68 and 66 without any problems and this bit was probably the most runnable bit of forest I went through.

Not the best route tonight, but as I knew I'd do badly whatever it wasn't worth going to the south end of the map. Think 10th place was as good as I'd have got anyway.

Running (BOK Training Run) 1:05:08 [4] 11.31 km (5:46 / km) +100m 5:31 / km
shoes: Saucony ProGrid Triumph 7

Struggling tonight - every time we came to an uphill I was down to pretty much walking pace. Coupled with the standard struggling to keep up for the first half it meant I had to cut out the odd corner just to stay in touch with the others.

Pace on the flat much better in the second half (as always seems to be the case) but I really had to push it on Monk's Park Road to keep up with Charles, Ifor and Rob.

Few plusses - nice to be off road again, and despite it feeling terrible the pace was a bit quicker than these Tuesday nights normally are.

Negatives - was the victim of a very vicious and unprovoked attack by a bramble; the most bloody my legs have been since Stoke Bishop.

Now to rest until Saturday night so that I have some energy to compensate for the fact that I can't find any of the paths on the Frith Wood map...
