Orienteering - Night race (Harvester Leg 1) 1:11:15 [4] 10.65 km (6:41 / km) +255m 5:58 / km
slept:4.0 weight:70.6kg shoes: VJ Integrator High (1)

Harvester at Winterfold. Leg 1 course 8GB - 8.4km on straight line.

Went straight on 1. Took a long time, found earth bank, turned left, found control - only it was the other gaffle's - hadn't noticed said earth bank on map as thought it was contour. Maybe lost 1 min. Easy 2 and 3.

All the other gaffle turned left and had a shorter route so it left a big group of us all doing the same course. They all went too low on 4 but I didn't so may have led the pack for a little bit.

Stopped a bit short on 5 - brambles horrible, steep drop, couldn't match contours and, most urgently, a sharp pain in my neck - thumb sized beetle biting me. Others overtook during this stoppage - followed to 6 but had no idea where we were going.

7 (control 189), seems went in a bit early but the distance and bend made it feel right - saw lights further along that gave control away. Lights led way into 8 too. Went straight on 9, should've gone round.

Nobody to follow for 10-13 but got them cleanly (but didn't find path by 11, and confused by big unmapped path into control by 13 - Ian D overtook). Both took road on 15 but executed poorly - overtook BOK B. Scrappy on 17 - too far east, relocate from junction, no idea where I was on 18-19 but it got me there.

Missed the path to 20 - saw it but decided it wasn't it, so ended up on lower one. North route on 21, descent grotty, BOK A in the distance steadily getting bigger, BOK B behind and overtook at the top of the hill.

Worst bit of the forest followed 21 - didn't like dipping into valley and remembered the far side as horrid last year, went around and maybe lost some time but did get to see a deer. Lost more time forcing my way through the fence - a single streamer on the (unmapped) kissing gate 50 yards south wasn't really obvious enough.

23-24 overtook Paul for 6th place - 2 mins behind 2nd. Probably my best orienteering since the last night o.

Orienteering race (BKO Rushall Woods) 29:04 [3] 3.49 km (8:20 / km) +50m 7:46 / km
slept:0.25 weight:70.6kg shoes: VJ Integrator High (1)

Nothing special terrain with a fair amount of bracken, low bramble, brashings and fallen trees.

Not really expecting to finish given how much I was struggling with heat earlier in morning. Drank a lot before starting to try and mitigate.

Didn't get into map well at start. First uphill in the open got me feeling light headed so then aimed to go as far as the start of the second map before quitting. This fell away as deteriorated on way to 4 (mapped as green when pretty much the whitest forest I've ever seen) and the later climbs wiped me out and gave up at 6.

Walked back very slowly via 9 and 11 and didn't find it very inspiring. Glad of some drink and the shade of my car. Just about managed to drive home after but suspect I should have waited longer to recover.

Note

Spent yesterday afternoon recceing the first part of my leg of Cotswold Way relay up on Painswick Beacon. Looked around some bits I've never been around - very interesting. Good news is that it's to be remapped after Coopers Hill next year. Look forward to it

Orienteering - Urban race (NGOC Street O) 41:57 [4] 8.53 km (4:55 / km) +60m 4:45 / km
slept:4.0 weight:70.6kg shoes: Saucony Powergrid Triumph 10 r

NGOC Street O at Abbeydale. 6.3km Long course.

Very hot. Topped up with a lot of salt throughout the afternoon and glad I did.

Think I took some pretty good route choices but tired very quickly - combination of heat and the last few days training. Kept going and was a good course and area for it. If the others are as good, well worth more from Bristol (just Mark and David Hunt tonight) coming up.

Only mistake was on 9 where I didn't read descriptions to see control was inside fence. Got Mark on a few splits where his route wasn't best. Struggling to plan as far ahead as I wanted due to effort required for running.

4 mins down on Mark, 2-3 on Andy Monro. Not too bad a result.

Wonder whether tonight's results will be up before Nailsea's?

Orienteering - Urban race (Nailsea South) 40:00 [4] 7.88 km (5:05 / km) +45m 4:56 / km
slept:4.0 shoes: Saucony Powergrid Triumph 10 r

BOK urban in Nailsea. 5.9km long course.

Very hesitant early on before and after 1. Mistake on 4 - parallel error and overshot - 50s. Not got the running pace on 5, 8, 20, 22.

Planned right route 8-9 but took wrong turn and gave myself more climb than I needed. Slow in the quarry as struggling to read map. Started to catch Doug towards the end.

Reasonable performance for me.

Finished off with food in the pub next to control 16.

Running - off road 1:03:34 [3] 11.08 km (5:44 / km) +50m 5:37 / km
slept:3.0 weight:71.3kg shoes: Saucony Powergrid Triumph 10 r

From Littleton - usual loop up river to Oldbury then back along rough green lanes. Cut "short" and avoided last wood.

Seems pace was very consistent but quite slow through one field early on because of cattle. Legs feeling very tight but getting into it a bit mid way through.

Found the rough track pretty hard - horse hooves churned it up a lot and ruts/holes hidden by long grass - very slow. Got a bit lost in the last field with thigh deep grass - stuck behind Jackie/Ifor so again very slow.

Didn't notice any hills so maybe Sunday worked. May feel it a bit tomorrow - might not be quite so fast at Nailsea as I was last week!
