Orienteering race (Everleigh) 1:13:52 [3] 11.23 km (6:35 / km) +140m 6:12 / km
slept:6.0 shoes: VJ Integrator High (1)

SARUM Galoppen at Everleigh. 9km brown.

Fairly typical SARUM - TD3 course with a dodgy map and the odd control in completely the wrong case (but would have been worse on blue!)

Early part of the course was across fields so quick. Got caught out in trusting map to get me out of 6 to east - it was mostly right but there was a lot more open than mapped and ended up running down the unmapped open rather than the one I wanted.

12 was a mess - light green veg with a rootstock just south west of a lone bush. But on the ground there were 30+ holly bushes, some massive, and not enough rootstocks. Nothing to relocate from apart from an unmapped ride and then did a tour of all rootstocks I could find (but visibility wasn't great) before landing on the correct, big, rootstock next to holly bush but there was no control - it was on a smaller, unmapped rootstock about 40m north east. Came back out on to track a bit higher than expected so confirms. 5 mins lost.

Should have cut through dark green on 12-13 as it wasn't very dark. Went straight on 16-17 which got worse - ran through two brambly clearings rather than the lone one that was mapped. Area west of 18 didn't look very white so went back north, but cut through green into 19 and 20 ok.

Nice day for a run, but not really up to ranking race standard. Well down on the results too so must have been hit particularly badly at 12.

Orienteering race (Pwll Du) 1:22:06 [3] 9.5 km (8:39 / km) +210m 7:47 / km
slept:2.0 shoes: VJ Integrator High (1)

Welsh League at Pwll Du. 7.9km brown.

Running theme for today - map clarity and runnability both significantly worse than for the JK.

Started 2 mins behind Burley and made both up by control 1 - lucky to get led in as was struggling with the map. Should have gone right round the path to 3 as tussocks on straight were almost impossible with ankle. Couldn't read the detail on map at 4, then led off course at the very end on 5 because of the very inconsistent mapping of the gullies pulling me too far east (turned around and saw somebody punch it).

Stuck in tussocks again on 7-8 let Clive get ahead. Around on 9 but straight on 10 (as per Clive) as it didn't look bad but turned out to be very steep and slow to start with.

11-12 went back up to path and think this was good. Couldn't match map up at all and hoping to find 18 on the way - didn't. Just before panic set in found a mine shaft and eventually located it on the map (had thought it was part of the adjacent crags) and realised where I was. No idea where I was going on 14, stopped, then found control below me.

Heather tough on straight route to 17, was hoping to be led into 18 in the dodgy map area but it seems everybody missed it despite looking like they knew where they were going. Saw control in corner of eye as was running down, but not where was expecting it - lucky!

Fairly easy to finish but still managed to get stuck in neck deep tussock gap on way to 21 and can assure you "seasonal" marsh towards end was both very tussocky and very wet even after the driest summer ever.

Quite a nice day out and course was good. Would have been even better with the new map. Not much can be done about tussocks and think they probably cost me 5 mins or so in trying to keep the ankle in one piece - but still pretty happy to be close to many others despite this.

Running intervals (Westbury Harriers) 58:41 [5] 7.18 km (8:10 / km)
slept:5.0 shoes: Saucony Powergrid Triumph 10 r

Westbury Harriers. Quite a few orienteers about Coombe Dingle tonight - Kit came over and chatted to me so everyone then thought I was a student.

1600m, 1200m, 800m, 400m, 200m - with about 2 mins rest between. GPS recorded 1700 for first effort and 850 for second as taking wide lines.

Times were 6:25, 4:44, 3:00, 1:19, 36s - so first two about 3:40/k and then faster as got shorter. Were running in 3 groups and went with the fastest who were all trying to make it look as though they weren't trying so quite chatty for long efforts but pushing much harder for short ones.

Ankle was fine, and once going, leg muscles weren't feeling so tight.

Saw a van drive into stationary cyclist on Southmead Road heading in - luckily cyclist was ok but the bike was a mess.

Running (Westbury Harriers) 46:28 [3] 9.22 km (5:02 / km) +95m 4:48 / km
slept:4.5 (injured) shoes: Saucony Powergrid Triumph 10 r

Westbury Harriers.

Running down with group 3 as not sure how it would feel - ankle was fine but legs feeling bad after a week of no stretching.

No trouble up the hills (apart from legs), and there was somebody else quick up them for me to run with. Down the hill less good, and had to run quite a bit differently to how I often do, but managed to get a reasonable pace on going down Falcondale Road.
