Running - off road (Sugar Loaf) 2:41:55 [3] 14.48 km (11:11 / km) +795m 8:46 / km
slept:5.0 shoes: inov8 Mudclaw300 Red/Blue

Return to Sugar Loaf, with Mark S, to check over some map amendments and a few other bits regarding safety and fairness. Skilfully didn't actually visit many/any control sites (at least not intentionally) - but they're all fine anyway.

Finished off by linking up with Ben and going for a run up to the top - dodging maniac horses on the way! Although looking quite white wasn't that much snow - but the Black Mountains looked really nice and inviting.

Definitely feeling tired today - or tired from part way through onwards. Pleased when we started going downhill!

Note

Attendance at some recent Level C orienteering races:

last week's BOK trot - 284
last week's WCH WML - 150
HOC West Midlands League today - 174
WSX Galoppen today - 198
Devon league today - 107
TVOC today - 379

TVOC did well as don't believe any clashes with other races in SC/SE (clever trick of make it the Chiltern Challenge, get other clubs to plan around, and then downgrade :-) ). For a C, and given the weather, BOK numbers were quite good.

For the rest, is it really sustainable to go to C for so low numbers? NGOC Ds get 120-150 now, BOK Ds anything up to 250 on a Sunday - and those are on lower rate access charges. Makes Welsh league entries look relatively healthy in comparison!

I know that the costs of putting on different races do vary, so it doesn't mean they've all made losses - but Knockalls Galoppen barely broke even with 220 (2 yrs ago)

Are there now too many "big" races competing with each other or is it just crap/inaccessible venues putting people off, or just lack of awareness that the race was on at all? Have the expectations of orienteers changed - such that they now expect a choice of Level Cs each week and won't travel unless there are ranking points on offer? Can/should we change anything?

Running race (Newport Parkrun) 19:37 [5] 5.0 km (3:55 / km)
slept:5.0 shoes: Adidas Kanadia tr7

Couldn't be bothered driving anywhere further so stuck to Newport parkrun in the rain.

Wore trail shoes as expecting to be more muddy but would have been faster in trainers.

Pretty much same time as two weeks ago - despite slower shoe choice, it feeling freezing and being completely knackered so happy with that.

Thought there were only 4 people in front of me but finished in 6th place so will have to look at results.

Grudgingly taking an easy weekend after very hard mid week, and busy next week too. Want to keep up with running twice on Saturdays so feel a little guilty - but sure I need a bit of rest.

Note

if I'd stuck with original plan of going to FoD I'd have almost certainly won! Still a lot to be said for cutting down the driving - and the easier course and more fast people about did make Newport the best option for getting a quality run in.

Running race (Work handicap 5k) 19:20 [5] 5.0 km (3:52 / km) +10m 3:50 / km
slept:5.0 shoes: Mizuno Wave Rider 18

Quite a low turnout tonight - 3:30 gap in front, 1:20 behind. Legs really tired from last night but running conditions were excellent.

Pushed quite hard and no slippery corners. Lost my 80s head start after 2 laps - but Darryl is very quick!

Managed to keep going to get 5th sub 20 5k of the year, 2nd of the month, and 3rd best time ever. Very pleased given its off the back of such a hard session yesterday.

Running hills (Lliswerry) 1:18:56 [5] 14.34 km (5:30 / km) +370m 4:53 / km
slept:6.0 shoes: Mizuno Wave Rider 18

Felt quite ill last night sent went to bed well before 11 and asleep almost straight away!

Evil session tonight - Beechwood asymmetrical efforts - 2 sets:
1 - 400m, 40m climb
2 - 950m, 60m climb (but last 250m flat-tish)
3 - 700m, 60m climb

Proper hills, but did not find I was able to stay consistent. Times
1 - 1:56, 2 - 4:36, 3 - 3:10
1 - 2:03, 2 - 4:49, 3 - 3:17

Good training anyhow.

Ran out and back with a young guy called Brian whose parkrun times have been sitting around 25-26 mins but just got down into low 24s in last fortnight - went out at 22:30ish pace quite happily. Chased him down on the way back and timed him at 4 min/ks at one point(!) so stuck with him to push him to keep going at reasonable pace. Fairly confident he could knock a minute or two off fairly quickly now once it starts drying out again.

Running (Lliswerry) 50:21 [3] 10.45 km (4:49 / km) +250m 4:18 / km
slept:5.0 shoes: Mizuno Wave Rider 18

Lliswerry along Ridgeway, down to Pye Corner station and back up via Melfort Road and Stow Hill.

Taking it easier this week than some of the previous ones. Steady pace on Ridgeway fighting a strong wind, and steady-fast up Bassaleg Road whilst the wind was behind.

Quite a tough run back home (against the wind again) - but regained the KOM I lost a few weeks ago so worth it!
