Running - off road race (Night Race - Beechnhurst) 41:17 [4] 8.13 km (5:05 / km) +170m 4:36 / km
slept:4.0 shoes: inov8 Mudclaw300 Red/Blue

Beechenhurst night race. New route this year - shorter and flatter, but very slippery mud! Climb up to Crabtree Hill was tough.

Steady run, as usual losing places where down - but regained them all on last hill. Really muddy section from the hill into the finish.

Not a bad run. Good to see Lucas come out.

Orienteering - Urban (SWOC Newport) 59:03 [3] 11.74 km (5:02 / km) +105m 4:49 / km
slept:4.0 shoes: Mizuno Wave Rider 18

SWOC street o in Newport. Feeling unwell all afternoon but didn't affect running.

Route S-22-13-11-29-61-44-33-53-45-34-24-14-31-28-27-21-37-F. Only 460 points

Lost a lot of time trying to read which feature I was supposed to be looking for, often misreading, and struggling to find them. Given all lamp posts in Newport have six characters definitely would have preferred multiple choice too.

Several consecutive losses in finding the hydrant (or whatever) a 34, 14, 31 and 28 killed my options of getting to the southern end of the map, so with 8 or 9 mins to go put the map away at 37 and just ran straight back (just over a mile). At 10 pts/min penalty would have been worth going for 52/43/35 but didn't want to feel rushed.

Well beaten by Marcus.

Running (Lliswerry) 59:03 [3] 11.73 km (5:02 / km) +190m 4:39 / km
slept:4.5 shoes: Mizuno Wave Rider 18

Lliswerry to the Greyhound. Purposely easy pace tonight - and it felt easy. With some quick people heading back to picked pace up once at the bottom of the hill and along Caerleon Road.

Running - off road (Sugar Loaf) 2:41:55 [3] 14.48 km (11:11 / km) +795m 8:46 / km
slept:5.0 shoes: inov8 Mudclaw300 Red/Blue

Return to Sugar Loaf, with Mark S, to check over some map amendments and a few other bits regarding safety and fairness. Skilfully didn't actually visit many/any control sites (at least not intentionally) - but they're all fine anyway.

Finished off by linking up with Ben and going for a run up to the top - dodging maniac horses on the way! Although looking quite white wasn't that much snow - but the Black Mountains looked really nice and inviting.

Definitely feeling tired today - or tired from part way through onwards. Pleased when we started going downhill!

Note

Attendance at some recent Level C orienteering races:

last week's BOK trot - 284
last week's WCH WML - 150
HOC West Midlands League today - 174
WSX Galoppen today - 198
Devon league today - 107
TVOC today - 379

TVOC did well as don't believe any clashes with other races in SC/SE (clever trick of make it the Chiltern Challenge, get other clubs to plan around, and then downgrade :-) ). For a C, and given the weather, BOK numbers were quite good.

For the rest, is it really sustainable to go to C for so low numbers? NGOC Ds get 120-150 now, BOK Ds anything up to 250 on a Sunday - and those are on lower rate access charges. Makes Welsh league entries look relatively healthy in comparison!

I know that the costs of putting on different races do vary, so it doesn't mean they've all made losses - but Knockalls Galoppen barely broke even with 220 (2 yrs ago)

Are there now too many "big" races competing with each other or is it just crap/inaccessible venues putting people off, or just lack of awareness that the race was on at all? Have the expectations of orienteers changed - such that they now expect a choice of Level Cs each week and won't travel unless there are ranking points on offer? Can/should we change anything?

Running race (Newport Parkrun) 19:37 [5] 5.0 km (3:55 / km)
slept:5.0 shoes: Adidas Kanadia tr7

Couldn't be bothered driving anywhere further so stuck to Newport parkrun in the rain.

Wore trail shoes as expecting to be more muddy but would have been faster in trainers.

Pretty much same time as two weeks ago - despite slower shoe choice, it feeling freezing and being completely knackered so happy with that.

Thought there were only 4 people in front of me but finished in 6th place so will have to look at results.

Grudgingly taking an easy weekend after very hard mid week, and busy next week too. Want to keep up with running twice on Saturdays so feel a little guilty - but sure I need a bit of rest.

Note

if I'd stuck with original plan of going to FoD I'd have almost certainly won! Still a lot to be said for cutting down the driving - and the easier course and more fast people about did make Newport the best option for getting a quality run in.
