Day 2 at DVOA
Big error took less time than yesterday's, but made up for that with being overall just fatter and slower - no energy.
Need to remember that this is so much more enjoyable when you are trimmer and in better shape - like this past spring.
Ok to 1 - caught up to Pete Bundschuh (2 minutes).
2 - drifted right/lower around the green stuff, found a good line through the woods, saw a control in the distance, but not mine, on a ring ditch? Headed left from where I thought I was, saw a platform with a control on it, but wrong code?? Saw 2 depressions near the platform, realized I was a bit short still, then found the right one.
3- Bashing through the green, trying to stay on line an go for the upper options whenever possible, but drifted downhill more than I realized. Crossed the indistinct trail thinking it was the bigger trail right along the red line. Kept going through more thick stuff, wondering when it was going to open up. Finally hit (a) second trail, but things weren't matching up. Was still thick green on both sides of the trail. Ran back and forth trying to get something to make sense - thought I was way high. Charcoal platform right on the trail - maybe I'm way low?? Took the trail up and finally got it to make sense, Across the broad reentrant above the large boulder (not that large by New England standards) then got caught up in a few folks wandering around in the area. Saw Pete coming down the hill to a control - went to it #4 - at least I know where I am now. Up the hill to 3, Carl Childs and Glen Tryson booking down hill, so I've lost a lot of time to them.
Make my way back to 4, then 5, then 6, slow trail jog/walk to 7. Not much of a plan to 8. Consider dropping way down to the trail, but it's a nasty downhill. Angle up, trying to go around the edge of the green but get sucked into it a bit. Pop out heading up and head for the top of the knoll, over the top and down. Am a bit to the right, but after a bit of nervous looking, see the crowd above me to the right and get it.
Down to the trail, past the water stop, decide to angle up over the spur rather than taking the trail all the way around. Slow but make it OK
10 - Pete Bundschuh back in front of me again/still. See a control by a boulder uphill of me, but realize it must be close to the top of the knoll, can't be mine.
11 - fortunately was the trail /scuffed leaves as I past over it, trail run down, then up then follow the ditch up.
12 - OK
13 - slow going down the hill, ok across the dam, but dying up the hill. hit it dead on
14 - a long side hill slog, no gas left in the tank.
