Hadn't been to Ahern for a while - was able to find my way around a number of different trails without getting bewildered.
Hard freeze with a lot of moisture in the ground has resulted in a lot of ice flowers blooming - patches of long ice crystals (3-6") that sprout out of the ground, generally with a thin crust of what ever was laying on the ground on top.
In many cases they looked like a stone by headlamp, so when I stepped on one and my foot kept going down beyond what my eyes said was a solid surface was a bit disconcerting. But they did generally make a satisfying crunching sound so it was a positive thing overall.
