XC Ski (skating) 39:30 [3] 8.5 km (4:39 / km) +156m 4:15 / km
ahr:148 max:164 shoes: Yellow Fischer Skating
Evening ski at Gunstock, finished under moonlight. Was actually pretty bright out in the open, but pretty dark deeper in the woods.

Lost a bit of snow in the last 2 days, hope we get some more on Thursday/Friday. Snow was glazed over in many places and starting to set up, but I could still get an edge.

In the rush to get out the door, grabbed a mis-matched pair of poles, 165 and 160. Enough of a difference that I could feel it, but still managed to get around.
Note
Knees were a bit sore after yesterday's run - need to go back and check when my last run was. Probably over a month ago. Why run when you can ski??

Almost didn't go out this evening, legs and knees sore, it's getting dark soon, need to get the student loan application for Ben in by tomorrow, it was warm today and we probably lost a lot of snow so there'll be rocks sticking up, etc.

Glad I went - it was beautiful out there, moon becoming more noticable as the sun faded off, well, into the sunset. Had the trails to myself.

As I got back to the car, there wa a guy in a van stopped there - said he'd been walking in the area and was driving home, saw my car and was concerned that someone might be hurt out on the trails. Nice to think there's still folks out there willing to be concerned about someone they don't know.

Monday Feb 26

Run hills (pavement) 44:00 [3] 7.2 km (6:07 / km) +170m 5:28 / km
ahr:160 max:170 shoes: Nike Air Assail Trail
Decided to go for a run rather than ski, as it was starting to get dark, and would be darker by the time I got to Gunstock, I would expect a fer more rocks to be peeping through after a relatively warm day and my skis are in bad enough shape as it is.

Up Woodland Ave, over to Morrill St, Stark St, Sleeper Hill and back.

Only almost got run off the road once - guess a bit more reflective gear is in order.

Sunday Feb 25

XC Ski (Skating) 1:06:00 [2] *** 8.5 km (7:46 / km) +200m 6:57 / km
ahr:144 spiked:15/15c shoes: White/Red/Black Fischer Skatin
Control Pickup after the ski-O - simple when they're all on the trails...and I set them out...and I made the map.

Warmed up into the mid-30s, sunny, softened up the hard icy patches.

Saturday Feb 24

XC Ski tempo (skating) 55:20 [4] *** 9.7 km (5:42 / km) +240m 5:05 / km
ahr:146 max:165 spiked:11/11c shoes: Yellow Fischer Skating
Skiing the long course to confirm trails in OK shape and it flows the way I want it to. Took a bit of time at each control to stomp down the snow around the control locations - just off the edge of the trails.
XC Ski tempo (skating) 35:24 [4] *** 6.5 km (5:27 / km) +140m 4:55 / km
ahr:142 max:160 spiked:8/8c shoes: Yellow Fischer Skating
caught my breath for a few minutes, then did the short course.

Pretty cold and a stiff breeze in the open area across from the XC center. Could feel the sweat icing up on my forehead as is dripped down from under my hat - felt like an ice cream headache.
XC Ski (skating) 49:35 [3] *** 7.4 km (6:42 / km) +160m 6:03 / km
ahr:144 max:164 spiked:7/7c shoes: White/Red/Black Fischer Skatin
Setting the distant controls in late afternoon.

Strange sense of deja vu - like I'd been at each of these places in the not too distant past...

Monday Feb 19

XC Ski (skating) 1:05:00 [3] 13 km (5:00 / km)
ahr:150 max:164 shoes: Yellow Fischer Skating

Sunday Feb 18

XC Ski race (Classic) 43:27 [4] 7.75 km (5:36 / km)
ahr:144 max:170 shoes: Fischer Classic Wax
1st (record) attempt at the Windblown trim course.
Decided to go classic to see if it made a difference on the snowshoe trails. Kick was good, was dragging a bit in places, maybe overwaxed. Not as aggressive as I should have been on the uphills.
XC Ski warm up/down (classic) 20:00 [2]
shoes: Fischer Classic Wax
Putzing around prior to test my wax, cooling off afterwards
XC Ski race (skating) 40:42 [4] *** 7.75 km (5:15 / km)
ahr:148 max:163 shoes: Yellow Fischer Skating
2d attempt - skating this time.
Took a few diffferent routes, based on what I'd seen the first go-round. Didn't have to do too much on the snowshoe trails, so it wasn't too bad. Much faster on the downhills without kick wax dragging.
XC Ski warm up/down (skating) 20:00 [2] 3.5 km (5:43 / km)
shoes: Yellow Fischer Skating
Having fun afterwards, saw Tom Jahn a couple of times.

Amazing how many folks go to Windblown as compared to Gunstock. Trails were crowded in a few spots. Don't think I terrified anyone too badly when I was racing, didn't find any blood on my skis or poles!

Saturday Feb 17

XC Ski tempo (classic) 1:24:00 [4] 15 km (5:36 / km) +365m 5:00 / km
ahr:157 max:173 shoes: Fischer Classic Wax
Classic at Gunstock - trails in good shape.

Felt great, good grip on the hills. A few leaves in the tracks which made for a few lurches.
XC Ski (Skating) 55:00 [3] 7.8 km (7:03 / km) +160m 6:24 / km
ahr:138 max:161 shoes: Yellow Fischer Skating
Mid-afternoon back at Gunstock with Ben. His first time on skis this year, did very well.

Sunday Feb 11

XC Ski (Classic) 1:15:00 [3] 15 km (5:00 / km) +375m 4:27 / km
ahr:150 max:172 shoes: Fischer Classic Wax
Classic skiing at Gunstock.
While I was out yesterday, saw a few of the GNA juniors training classic, and realized there was some pretty decent classic tracks set.

I think they had a BKL race this morning, on the short loop on the N side of Cobble, fair conditions. Went up the big hill around the E side of Cobble to the south trails. Birch is in god shape, along with 7A. Went out and back on that, then down the big S curve hill, turned around and went back up and then back out on Birch/7A again. There was a young couple snowshoeing down the S curve and they looked at me funny when I stopped, flipped my skiis around and headed right back up again. I should have looked at them funny - snowshoes for 4" of hardpack?? Hey, they're out, they paid for a trail ticket, they're following the rules, good for them.

Forgot how much more of a workout classic can be. Nice blue klister conditions, with a little extra blue on top for those sections where it's still a bit powdery. Some sections had vegetation coming up and a few rocks here and there.

Hoping we get hammered later this week, supposed to be a storm tracking this way.

Saturday Feb 10

XC Ski (skating) 1:10:00 [3] 12.8 km (5:28 / km) +270m 4:57 / km
ahr:153 max:170 shoes: Yellow Fischer Skating
Gunstock - still skiing on the 6" we got a couple of weeks ago.
The Nordic Assoc brought in some additional snow from the downhill parking lot and spread it on parts of the trail network to supplement the losuy natural cover - there was a HS race earlier this week. THey haven't groomed those trails since then. Those sections were hard packed and tough to skate on, hard to get an edge.
The southern part was pretty good, although there's been more and more rocks poking up through.

Glad I decided to not go forward with a ski-O at Gunstock this weekend, there's just not enough trails open to provide any route choice. Keeping an eye on the weather forecast - possibly a short notice event next weekend.

Tuesday Feb 6

XC Ski (skationg) 1:00:00 [3] 10.6 km (5:40 / km) +233m 5:06 / km
ahr:146 max:166 shoes: White/Red/Black Fischer Skatin
Mid-day romp over at Gunstock.
Working a modified schedule this week - 2d grandchild born yesterday morning, a girl!

WIth Beth's schedule for the Legislature up in the air, and Matt having to work, decided I should be available to watch Ryan while his Mom is still in the hospital. His other grandmother is up for a few days, but Ryan likes me better...

I guess with 2 grandkids I should start thinking about feeling old. Nah, I'll put that off for awhile.

Moderately lousy to OK conditions.

Sunday Feb 4

XC Ski (skating) 1:37:00 [3] 14.5 km (6:41 / km) +320m 6:01 / km
ahr:153 max:169 shoes: White/Red/Black Fischer Skatin
Gunstock - some trail fairly well groomed, others only rolled, leaving some pretty deep ripples.

Hey it's snow and I'm skiing - enjoy it!

Saturday Feb 3

XC Ski (skating) 49:00 [3] 9 km (5:27 / km) +158m 5:00 / km
shoes: Yellow Fischer Skating
6" of unexpected snow.
trails rolled, but where they've been using the backhoe on the new sections it's got lots of dirt chunks and ruts.
The south section's OK, but they haven't touched the section along the brook, so it's out and back rather than a loop
