Monday Apr 30

Run (Pavement) 30:00 [3] 5.3 km (5:40 / km) +90m 5:13 / km
ahr:155 shoes: Brooks
Felt uninspired for the first half, until I got warmed up, then felt a lot better. Probably would have gone longer, but left Beth home with 2 grandkids, one was sleeping and the other was fussing. Could have gone downhill, so didn't want to stay out too long.

Knees a bit creaky, major difference running pavement versus in the woods.

Sunday Apr 29

Orienteering race 1:27:24 [4] **** 7.6 km (11:30 / km) +310m 9:33 / km

A few bobbles and a couple of bigger errors.

A beautiful day in the woods though.

West Point Day 1 - Long Mountain East.
Very nice terrain - good visibility. A bit too many blueberry bushes underfoot in a few sections...

Course setter made good use of the terrain - climb was tolerable.

Measured the distance 3 times - I got it as 6.65 Km rather than the advertised 6.27
Orienteering race 18:30 [5] ***** 2.2 km (8:25 / km) +60m 7:24 / km

droning on the treadmill at the hotel. room was hot and humid

Monday Apr 23

Run 29:00 [2] 3.3 km (8:47 / km) +75m 7:53 / km
shoes: Nike Air Assail Trail
Checking out the newly cut ski trails at Gunstock. A lot of slash still to be cleared. Going to be some interesting options for ski-o next season.

The original Cobble loop trail by the stream took a bit of a beating during the heavy rain. The stream cut a bit more from where it started undercutting last year - will probably need some fill for the groomer to make it by next winter.

Much of the trail was at the peak for mud season fineness - not matter where you stepped, or how lightly, your shoes were going to get covered. I'm really suprised I didn't lose a shoe in the muck.

Sunday Apr 22

Kayaking 50:00 [2]
Winnisquam - Put in at Ahern and headed up to the north end of the lake. There was still ice just before the islands, so played around in the edges of it for a bit. It was about 2" thick, highly honey-combed. The wave action along the edges was breaking it up pretty good, Didn't see any polar bears.

Did see a few loons, some from fairly up close. The air temp was pretty warm, 60s or 70s, but the water was still pretty chilly. Spent a few minutes tihinking about "if I tip over, will I be able to make it to shore before hypothermia does me in, or would that be it." Since I didn't go over, I guess this will remain a purely theoretical discussion for now.
Orienteering race 1:13:15 [4] *** 7.2 km (10:10 / km) +141m 9:16 / km
spiked:9/14c shoes: VJ Spikes 1
Local meet - College Woods. Course by Faye Doria, nicely done, especially considering the foot bridge below the dam was discovered to be gone only a couple of days prior to the event.
A few minor bobbles, generally good navigation, but not much speed.

Enjoyed the day and the temps in the low 70s.

Saturday Apr 21

Kayaking 25:00 [2]
At Opeche. The wind picked up from when I left the house to when I got to the lake. Not quite white caps, but some pretty good chop.

INaugural outing for the new 12' kayak - definitely easier to get on and off the roof of the car than the 16' double kayak or the 16' canoe.

Although the air temp was in thelow 70s, the water was at most 35F - took a while for my ankles to warm up from when I put in. Pretty strong current around the bridge - all the lakes are high from all the rain the past few weeks and the high temps contributing to the snow melt.

Wednesday Apr 18

ahr:144 max:158 shoes: Brooks

XC Ski (Back Country) 1:07:00 [2] 5.9 km (11:21 / km) +180m 9:51 / km
Inaugural outing for my backcountry skiis, which I thought I wouldn't get to use until next winter.

Went up to the top trails on the N side of Cobble. Was initally worried about too much speed coming down hill, but the very warm conditions and the heavy crust kept things well cunder control. Had to double pole to get down hill.

Putzed around on some of the new sections for a bit, a lot of slash and not enough snow to cover it completely, so ended up going around the remainder of the Cobble loop. A couple of folks had been out prior to me, 2 on snowshoes and someone on skiis, so I wasn't breaking track for most of it. An enjoyable time.
