| Pulling controls and water stops out of the woods. Estimate on distance and climb to follow later, didn't have on my GPS arm thingy today.
Was on my feet most of the day - feeling pretty wiped out.

| AOWN Report for today-
Roadkill count on the road from Laconia to Bow - Racoon - 2 Skunk - 1, but smelled bad enough for a dozen or more Moose - 1. Yup, a moose. Lying off on the left hand side of the interstate, a semi pulled off on the right. Looked like a dented fender on the truck. Moose was huge - looked to be about 3 1/2 - 4 feet high lying on its side. In the woods at Nottingcook Black bear - 1. Driving down a dirt road in my car to pull one of the remote water stops, crest a rise and see a big black furry butt scurrying down the trail in front of me. Seemed to be coming from the marshy area down to the left, then darted up into the woods on the right. As the water stop and the controls I were pulling were only a couple hundred meters away, listened real hard before I headed into the forest...

| Pre-running the Green Y course - were short folks willing to go out early.
Almost pegged it - went ot the wrong boulder on the way to 1 - I thin it was the Green X control 1 - fortunately right on the way. screwed up #4, Maybe a minute's worth. Had 48:30 for the course - GPS distance covered 4.9K, versus the OCAD length of 4.35K. Fastest time for the course on theday, but then I had been to each control location previously, some several times....

| Hanging controls and vetting at Nottingcook Forest in Bow for tomorrow's Boulder Dash, along with schlepping water up into a couple of the remote water stops.
AOWN - just about stepped on a good sized garter snake (18") in one of the open areas. I imagine it had been sunning itself when I came along and disturbed a perfectly good snooze...

| Hiking 30:00 [1] | ||
| shoes: Gray Nike XCR | ||
| Checking out hte enhanced XC trails at Gunstock, with Ryan on my shoulders for most of the time.
AOWN - saw a doe and a fawn a bit ahead of us. They ran off down the trail, instead of heading right into the woods. I think Ryan was watching them, at least he was real quiet while they were in view Trails are really shaping up - most of the new sections that have been cut are now smoothed out and covered with a nice soft layer of mulch. Need to do some fine tuning on the new trail map and find out what GNA is going to name the new trails. Can't wait for snow, although it isn't feeling much like winter - 77F at 7pm.

| At Ahern. Donw the main road, then stayed right to the 2d beach. Up the hill towards the back of the prison. Saw what looks like a new trail for High School XC races - followed it out in the fields across from the Robbie Mills complex, then back into the woods.
Loks of folks out this evening, many with dogs, most of whom were fairly well behaved.

| Gunstock ski trails
I'm impressed with the improvements on the new trails. GNA posted some photos of the large backhoe being used on the trails. Smoothed out the bumps, trenched and backfilled with boulders for water drainage, and generally fixed things up proper. There are also large piles of mulch, apparently to be spread out on the trail, should help with erosion and make the trails better for running on the off season, rather than covered with mud... Now if someone would just get out and mow the older established sections that aren't heavily used by the hikers or horse riders.
Tuesday Sep 11 | ||

Lower back bugging me a bit, not severe, but uncomfortable.

| Stoped by the bikeshop today to get a wheel trued up for #4 son's bike that developed a serious out-of-whack condition. Turns out it is past the point of an easy fix by adjusting the spokes, so $55 for a new rim and getting the tube & tire moved over.
While I was there, wandered over by the new mtn bikes and decided maybe it was time to replace my mtn bike which wandered off a few years back. $330 later, I now have a Trek 4300, 2008 model. Not top of the line by any means, but much nicer than anything I've had in the past.
| Mtn Bike 47:00 [2] 9.3 km (5:03 / km) +156m 4:40 / km | ||
| ahr:140 max:160 | ||
| Inaugural ride at Ahern. Some time on the loop trail to figure out the gears. Messed up going up the steep part - almost popped a wheelie and wentover backwards using the granny gear as I started back up. NIce to know I can climb some pretty extreme slope up - not that I intend to make a habit of that.
Tried some of the single track that I run on a lot. Lot's of fun, but the potential for some major bodily injury. Just barely avoided going over the handlebars a couple of times. Didn't help that it was close to dusk - more light would definitely help me see what's coming up.
Monday Sep 3 | ||
| Orienteering 3:15:00 [2] *** 14.9 km (13:05 / km) +410m 11:30 / km | ||
| ahr:150 max:163 shoes: Falcon spikes 2007 | ||
| Vetting Boulder Dash controls/courses. A wonderful mix of New England forest types and a few sections of not so wonderful thick stuff....
Ran the Day 1 Green Y - 5 k - took about 80 minutes, with a couple of times when I did some more careful checkign of possible questionable sections.
Sunday Sep 2 | ||
| Run hills (trails) 1:00:00 [3] ** 7.85 km (7:39 / km) +275m 6:30 / km | ||
| ahr:153 max:167 shoes: Nike Air Assail Trail | ||
| Gunstock - checked out the new XC trails - someone's been out there with some heavy equipment and really fixed up a lot of it. Most of the slash has been pushed to the edges or has disappeared, and the earth has been smoothed out considerably. No additional cutting on the last piece that will connect with the upper Cobble trails - but there's still time before snow flies.
THen ran over to Mt Rowe and ran around on some of those trails - need ot get the base map done so I can start filling it in. There's quite a few trails criss-crossing the E side of the ridge and some varied terrain and vegetation. Many of the old ski trails are still visible.
| Walking (lawn mowing) 30:00 [1] | ||
| Pushing the reel mower back and forth for a while. Doesn't do as well as the gas powered one - seems to just push over the taller stems rather than catching them between the blade and the cutting edge and seharing them off. But hey, over all the grass is shorter than it was when I started... | ||
