Monday Jun 30

Orienteering 24:00 [2] ***
ahr:121 max:159 shoes: Inov-8 MudClaws
Picking up the rest of the controls from Sunday's event. Moderate temps and some humidity.

Wasn't pushing it too much - have felt pretty off the past few days. Not much energy and motivation levels pretty low.

Mosquitos seemed pretty lethargic also. Wasn't moving fast, but they still weren't keeping up.

Orienteering 1:30 ***

Putting out the last few contrls just prior to, and picking up about 2/3 of them afterwards.

As I was driving over, the heavens opened and I got drenched putting out the directional signs. Was getting set to go hand the last few controls, when I realized that I'd left the orange box of map casees in the garage. With things as wet as they were, my maps wouldn't survive the time it would take me to hang the last few controls, plus would certainly need them for the event. Back home and back to Ahern, during which time the rains tapered off.

Jogged slowly around the loop hanging the controls on or close to the trail. got back to the car and saw that the gate was still closed - and the first folsk, the Ruutoiplds were pulling in. Greeted them and rapidly started formulating a plan B, as the Bundschuhs and Taburs arrived.

Ended up doing registration out of the back of my car, then sending folks the 500 m down the trail to the beach-front cabin, where Pete took a clock and a clipboard for a self-service start/finish setup.

Low to moderate turn-out, but good response to the courses. With Aanika and Tiivo runnning Yellow and White, all the courses were used, so no effort wasted on that account. Had a few adventure racers show up - they did OK - might have been better if I'd had an Orange level course set, but the sprints were short enough and most controls close enough together that they got through it OK. They seemed psyched at the end and excited that they'd gotten all the controls.

Hanging controls for Sunday. Still noting a few map refinements in my mind to be added to the base map prior to printing.

Pre-running one of this weekend's sprints courses and part of the second one. Still a couple of map corrections to make, had mis-hung one of the streamers.

Should be runnable in under 18 minutes - 2.2 km.

Was very wet - off and on thunderstorms for most of the past 24 hours. Marshes pretty full, leaves and branches very wet also, so got soaked in short order. Felt good to be out in the woods pushing it.

Took it easy around the first third of the second sprint, stopped a few times to figure out what was screwed up with the map.

Cut it short to do...

Run intervals (trail) 2:40 [5] 0.6 km (4:27 / km) +40m 3:20 / km
ahr:144 max:170 shoes: Inov-8 MudClaws
4x 160 m intervals up the trail from the upper parking up to the power lines. Would have done more, but there were 2 women with 4 dogs they didn't seem interested in keeping under control. "They're friendly, just loud..."
Yeah , when you're trying to do hill intervals, it really messes you up to have dogs darting around underfoot barking and stuff.

Sunday Jun 22

Upper Body (construction) 1:00:00 [3]
About 3.5 hours of work at in-laws, tearing off the old decking, as my father in-law was cutting and placing the new stuff. Using a 4x4 from below to pop the nails up, so I could get them with a pry bar. Trying to salvage as much as I can to re-use as a ground level surface under my deck - covering the sand and muck..
Shoulders and back got trashed.

Hiking 2:40:00 [2] ** 9.4 km (17:01 / km) +575m 13:02 / km
ahr:109 max:149 shoes: Merrill Hikers
Red Hill in Moultonborough with Jon. Up over Eagle cliff. A nice day, clear and a slight breeze, upper 60s.

Saw a lot of motorcycles on the way back. Went the back roads to avoid the largest crowds.

Walking (Lawn Mowing) 35:00 [1]
shoes: Gray Nike XCR
Pushing the reel mower around the front yard. Since It hasn't been too long since I mowed with the powered mower, it worked fairly well. If I let it go to long and the grass gets high, the reel mower just pushes it down, not cutting it.

Got a thumbs up from a neighbor walking by for having the quietest mower in the neighborhood. Guess one of the knuckleheads down the street got an early start this morning.

Orienteering 1:40:00 [2] *** 7.1 km (14:05 / km) +150m 12:44 / km
ahr:109 max:159 shoes: Inov-8 MudClaws
Flagging control locations for sprints on 6/29. Need to do some work on the map in a few spots - simplify some sections, adjust some green, etc.

Think I'm sending folks through the more runnable sections of the map.

Saturday Jun 14

Canoeing 1:10:00 [2]
On Winnisquam - put in at the end of the street near the outlet of the Winnpesaukee River into the lake. Headed N along the shoreline into the breeze, around a couple of very small islands. Some guys fishing, saw them pull in some good sized fish. Back S, then up the river, past the not yet opened boat launch, under the Water St bridges, to the right of the island and under the Main St bridge to just under the dam. Moderate current, was working hard, but not all out, to get under the last bridge. Has been a real struggle in the past to work against the current and get up that far.

More leisurely float back down. Chinburg's done a lot of cleanup at the building site, saving some of the larger timbers. Went around the other side of the island, a bit more of a channel here.

Was feeling it in my arms and back when I was done.
Walking (Lawn mowing) 45:00 [1]
The push reel mower just doesn't work well on the long stuff, so reverted to the motorized version for today. Dry and dusty, and loud.
Mtn Bike 43:30 [3] 6.3 km (6:54 / km) +100m 6:24 / km
ahr:143 max:159
Bike trails at Ahern. From easy double track, to moderate single track, to get off and walk so you don't kill yourself stuff. Someone's done a lot of work raking to make the trails visible. Need to check the O map to make sure it reflects what are now more than intermittent trails.

Followed by a dip in the lake -

Friday Jun 13

Run (trails) 36:00 [3]
ahr:157 max:168 shoes: Brooks
Bike trails at Ahern - Frwd unit acting up, so I didn't get a good read on the distance or climb.

Heart rate seemed to be at tempo pace, but didn't seem like I was moving at a reasonable speed - just inefficient. Not too warm - mid-70s, with just a little breeze.

Went for a swim afterwards, parked outside the gate, although it still wasn't locked when I left at 7:15. Got eaten alive by the mosquitos walking down and back - took the straight path (with lots of grass) rather then the slightly longer dirt road. A lot of pollen in the water, but it was nice and cool.

AOWN: Interacted with 2 ticks and a couple gazillion mosquitos. Memories of an early morning at Ahern for an event a few years back when there were swarms of dragonflies all throughout the clearing by the beach, enjoying the hell out of the mosquitos. As I remember, the boys were mightily impressed.

Tuesday Jun 10

Run (Trail) 18:00 [3] 2.4 km (7:30 / km) +80m 6:26 / km
ahr:154 max:167 shoes: Brooks
Some heat training at Ahern, followed by a dip in the lake.

Mid-80s, down from the mid to upper 90s over the past few days. Breezy.

Was feeling very sluggish, decided to go take a dip, then figured might as well do a short run to make it all worthwhile. Worked out just as I planned.

Ahern loop along the lake, up on the bike trail, crossed over to the very twisty bike trail, over to the powerlines to the main loop and back down to the beach.
