Tuesday Sep 30

Run intervals (pavement) 28:30 4.5 km (6:20 / km)
ahr:149 max:168 shoes: Brooks
Early AM workout - first pre-dawn outing in quite a while.

Warmed up down the hill and in front of the HS, then headed up Gilford Ave. 6 x 60-70 paces sprints on various uphill sections.

Sunday Sep 28

Run (trails) 45:00 [3] 9 km (5:00 / km) +120m 4:41 / km
ahr:154 max:165 shoes: Asics Orange Trail 08
Gunstock trails -kinda muddy, been raining since Friday with offshoots from Kyle. Sun was almost out when I started, but it got cloudy pretty quick and began to rain as I was on my way back in. Had contemplated going up the Orange trail over Gunstock and coming down the Mt ROwe ridge, but didn't get started until 5:15. Decided to go to the southern trails, loop around and come back on the opposite side of Cobble. Didn't want to be caught up top in the dark.

Considering the Hudson Highlander next weekend. NOt really in shape for an extended run like that. and there's a lot of stuff I still need to get done around here.

Tuesday Sep 23

Run (trails) 26:30 [3] 3.7 km (7:10 / km) +60m 6:37 / km
ahr:152 max:167 shoes: Asics Orange Trail 08
Moderate run on the twisty bike trails at Ahern. Not feeling too peppy, almost took a header once as it was getting darker.

Road down to the beach is all fixed and in good shape.

Saturday Sep 20

Orienteering race 2:05:00 [3] 8 km (15:38 / km)
ahr:146 max:164 shoes: Inov-8 MudClaws
Red Course at Joe English, courses by Bill & Charlotte Gray. First time running here for me, I think. A lot of trail running, but they took good advantage of the chunks of woods available.

#4 was missing, spent about 15-20 minutes thrashing around looking for it before giving up and heading on.

Some areas of the map are a bit shaky, but only a few bobbles. Mismarked one control, but figures it out losing only 2-3 minutes.

Beautiful day - felt pretty good overall, until towards then end when I got a blister on my left heel - seems to besomethng with the mudclaws that rubs - can only do about 5-6km before a blister develops.

Tuesday Sep 16

Run tempo (trails) 49:30 [4] 7.54 km (6:34 / km) +165m 5:55 / km
ahr:154 max:167 shoes: Inov-8 MudClaws
Trail run at Gunstock. Was contemplating an easy run, possibly coming back over the top of Cobble. Was feeling pretty good and picked up the pace and kept pushing. Out along trail 9 (the upper trail) and left to the logging landing, then down along the stream trail to the meadow, back along the logging road, then continued counter clockwise the rest of the way around the Cobble loop.
GNA has pipe laid up over the height of land along the trail, although they haven't crossed the trail yet.
Some evidence of addtional logging on the south part, seem to be mostly widening the trail. No work yet on the additional trails around the west side of Cobble.

Saturday Sep 13

Run / hike long 3:15:00 [3] ** 13.6 km (14:20 / km) +650m 11:34 / km
ahr:130 max:161 shoes: Asics Orange Trail 08
Up Mt Major via the crosscut trail. Tough finding some of the trail heads, but cast back and forth from the Rock Cave trail and found it. Kind of peters out once it hits the open area by the summit - would be very hard to find from that direction.
Over to S Straightback via the Beaver Pond trail and the dotted red link. Stopped near the summit to pick a pint or so of blueberries - still amazed at how late in the year it is and there are still plenty on the bushes.
From there headed east towards Anna. Took the between the swamps dotted red trail over to the summit of W Quarry, then headed to E Quarry and N Straightback. Some significant logging in the area. Took the cutover to the Major / Straightback link, back to the top of Major, then down teh Boulder Loop (orange trail).

Wednesday Sep 10

Walking 30:00 [1]
Around the neighborhood to try to clear my head.
Helped some, but a lot going on that I still need to mentally process and work through.

Sunday Sep 7

Orienteering race 1:44:36 [3] 6.4 km (16:21 / km) +225m 13:54 / km
shoes: Inov-8 MudClaws
Sunday Red course. Feeling tired after a late night in the woods and not much sleep what with very heavy rain against the tent until 2-3 am.
Sligth bobble on 1, the good (although slow) until 6, where Kristin Hall pulled me off to the right on a short leg - lost about a minute. Different route than Kris to the beaver dam, got there to see her wading through "it's only knee deep" to the dam. Inattentive across to #7, wandered rigth/uphill, almost to #9 before relocating. Too far right to #8 also, ending up on the wrong side of the (full) marsh. Pegged #9, then too far right for #10. Blew #11, must have crossed the UNO trail at some point without seeing it.

Red Day 2 - Splits

Saturday Sep 6

Orienteering race 2:17:19 [3] **** 8.5 km (16:09 / km) +250m 14:05 / km
ahr:143 max:162 spiked:12/16c shoes: Falcon spikes 2007
UNO Camping Weekend Blue Course
Overcast and very wet woods from the predecessor to Hanna having come through earlier in the day.

Some good parts, some not so good. Was running much of the first third, then decided I needed to back off a bit if I was going to make it all the way through. A few good brain cramps.
Orienteering race (Night-O) 2:00:20 [3] ***** 5.5 km (21:53 / km)
spiked:7/10c shoes: VJ Spikes 1
JJ Wicked Hard Night-O.

Started raining as we were finishing up dinner. Picked up a bit before the Vampire-O started, and it was well and truly wet when 13 of us started. Before we crossed the main road a fast group had already split away, but I was content to slog along with the slower group of PG, Charlie, Phil Bricker and a few others.

Was fully engaged on the way to 1, content to follow the group and get a sense for how ugly this was going to be. Better on the way to 2, on my own for little bit of the leg. Followed CHarlie into the swamp on the way to 4, then got to the control ahead of him. along the trail on the first half to 4 with Charlie, then cut up and over the hill. Wasn't comfortable with where we hit the next trail, which threw Charlie. Ended up he was right, but I recovered coming into the control from along the ridge rather than stright up the hill. Punched shortly after PG and Andrew Childs, who headed off to 6. Charlie annonuced his intention to cut down to #11. Wasn't sure I wanted to do the whole thing, but wasn't ready to head in just yet. Headed over to 8, working my way between the marshes, then got completely turned around in the boulder field. Thought I saw a headlamp at one point, which might have been the 3 fast runners coming through. Nothing was making sense, considering calling it a night and starting a long uncertain slog south to the road, when wasable to relocated off 3 good sized boulders in a triangle about 100 m NNW of the control. Had been raining very hard, so much so that it was almost a white out. Very comforting feeling to see that blaze of reflected light. Pegged 9, off abit to 10, but saw it off to the side and uphill. Took the more direct route to 11, zig zagging between the marshes and getting tied up in some nasty thick wet stuff. Pegged 11 from the corner of the stone wall, then saw Randy Kemp and Andrew who had come around the safe route taking the trail, with PG a couple hundred meters behind them.
Very happy to get in.

Blue - Splits

Tuesday Sep 2

Run warm up/down 39:00 [2] 5.4 km (7:13 / km) +100m 6:37 / km
ahr:138 max:160 shoes: Asics Orange Trail 08
Warm up run along the Gunstock trails - checking out where there's been activity. Some tree trimming etc, in preparation for laying snow making pipe from the reservoir over the N side of the hill to the stadium area.

Saw a few Mtn bikers.

Warm and muggy - a few FDFs, but nothing too bad.

Cooling down afterward, cut across on the longer shortcut from 8 to 9. Been some work on that - looks like they redid the bridge, and cut down the hemlock that's been leaning across the trail for a couple of years. Laid some gravel down in a couple of the lower soft spots.

Run intervals (trail) 3:00 [4] 0.56 km (5:21 / km) +40m 3:57 / km
ahr:155 max:168 shoes: Asics Orange Trail 08
4 x 140m (?) uphill intervals. From the upper entrance to the wood loop up around the corner. About 75 paces each.

Times: 43, 47, 48, 50. with about 2:30 walking return between.

Need to concentrate more on my breathing. A bit congested, but was mostly gasping, rather than forceful exhalations and inhalations.

Monday Sep 1

Hiking 1:30:00 [1] 4.0 mi (22:30 / mi) +150m 12:31 / km
shoes: Gray Nike XCR
Another fishing day with father-in-law Jim and son TIm. A perfect day not a cloud in the sky, moderate temps, low humidity and although the wind was very strong along Crawford Notch, it was not too bad up in the Dry River valley.

Fishing was OK - sporadic activity. Ended up with 4 keepers, but the biggest was only 7 1/2" versus the 8 1/2" from last weekend.
