Tuesday May 29

Run intervals (trails) 8:30 [5]
shoes: Nike Air Assail Trail
Ahern
7 x 100-pace sprints along the bike trail loop by the power lines.

Tried to keep up the turnover rate. Was fading at the end on the last couple, expecially when I'd hit the uphill sections.

Lots of wild flowers out - bird-on-the-wing and some star flowers, also the small white clusters (can never remember what they're called).
Run warm up/down (trails) 25:00 [2]
shoes: Nike Air Assail Trail
Around the Ahern circle trail and to and from the side bike loop.

A few mosquitoes out, enough motivation to keep moving at a reasonable pace.

Monday May 28

Hiking 4:00:00 [2] ** 13.1 km (18:19 / km) +750m 14:15 / km
shoes: Merrill Hikers
Up Chocorua with Jon. Bolles trail to Beeline, links with brook trail, then Liberty to the sunmmit. Down via Liberty trail. Great weather, enough breeze to keep the bugs at bay. It turned into a stiff wind up on the summit, but it felt great.

Sunday May 27

Kayaking 1:20:00 [2]
On Merrimack River in Concord. Put in at the Everett Arena ramp and headed up stream. Working against the current - seemed to be less near the shore. Checked out several oxbows, found where Mill Brook comes into the river.

Saw lots of wildlife - a very large beaver came dashing down the shore and belly flopped in just ahead of me. A heron was hanging out just below the beaver dam on Mill Brook. Saw a couple of eagles working the river. Watched a woodchuck swim across a section of the oxbow. A few box turtles also...

Area has some possibilities for a canoe-O - need to chelk out the topo maps/ aerial photos and see how many other smaller lakes I missed.
Orienteering (vetting) 2:20:00 [2] *** 10 km (14:00 / km)
shoes: Falcon spikes 2007
Vetting control locations for this fall's Boulder Dash. A beautiful day - enough breeze to keep the black flies and mosquitos at bay, except in the thickest parts.

Also checked out proposed White and Yellow courses - it's going to be a tough area. A lot of cleared areas, which means brambles, and other nasty stuff underfoot. They've also recently taken a brushhog through under the power lines, so there was lots of short sharp stumps to trip and impale oneself on. Hard to gauge what it will look like in early fall.

Saturday May 26

Kayaking 1:00:00 [3]
Wicwas Lake off Meredith Ctr Road. Stiff breeze, so no bugs today. Quite a bit of chop, and caught lots of spray as I headed out - got soaked. Temps in the high 80s, so it felt pretty good.

Spent some time exploring the marsh off the NW corner - got quite a ways in. I think this was fed by a brook from the other lake (??) further W on Rt 104. Water veryhigh, so I was able to get into areas i normally wouldn't have been able to reach.

Went in early afternoon - we hosted an open house for Chris Dodd in the morning - up campaigning for the weekend. I really liked what he had to say, and how he said it, but I think the media has written him off. Certainly hasn't raised the big bucks of some of the other candidates.

Friday May 25

Kayaking 25:00 [1]
Saltmarsh Pond in GIlford.
Just before dusk, no breeze at all and the black flies were out in full force.
Of course I had no bug spray with me, so I cut it shorter than I would have otherwise.

Tuesday May 15

Run (treadmill) 24:00 [2] 2.2 mi (10:55 / mi)
max:155 shoes: Brooks
broke a sweat at least

Saturday May 5

Note
No organized training today, but my ass is dragging. Decided it was time to clear out a lot of the construction debris that's been accumulating in the backyard since last fall - ripped out wall board, bags of old insulation, carpet and pad, some of the old floor boards that even I couldn't put to use, etc.

Jon and I filled up the trash trailer and the back of the pickup and headed off to the dump. Heading up Meredith Center Road and there's cones down the center line, and guys directing traffic.

When I got asked for an ID at the entrance, it dawned on me - it's spring cleanup day, aka free dump day!!!

So instead of having to pay $75 -100 to dump all the demo material, it was free. Plus, there were guys from Public Works helping folks unload stuff - so Jon and I got a break. Just had to wait in line much longer than normal, but well worth it.

Followed that up with another trip to Home Depot - the rest of the lights for the new master bath, some more wall board, and lots of trim.

Felt like a total body workout, judging by where I was sore.

Friday May 4

Run (trails) 32:30 [2] ** 4.4 km (7:23 / km) +90m 6:42 / km
shoes: Nike Air Assail Trail
Bike trails at Ahern.

Looking for the area that burned a few weeks back, but can't find it, must be closer to the industrial park buildings.

Tuesday May 1

Run (trails) 45:00 [2] ** 5 km (9:00 / km) +150m 7:50 / km
ahr:144 max:160 shoes: Nike Air Assail Trail
Checking out the trails at Gunstock. Lots of muddy footing, and lots of slash from the logging. Not much progress on cutting the final swathe across the upper part of Cobble Mtn.
Run hills 4:00 [4] 0.8 km (5:00 / km) +100m 3:05 / km
shoes: Nike Air Assail Trail
Interspersed the run with some hill sprints, as the mood hit me.
6 x 40-45 sec approx.
