Tuesday Oct 30

Run (treadmill) 24:00 [3] 2.2 mi (10:55 / mi)
shoes: Brooks

Sunday Oct 28

Run long (mtn trails) 1:55:00 [3] ** 11.15 km (10:19 / km) +630m 8:03 / km
ahr:143 max:164 shoes: Nike Air Assail Trail
From the base of the Belknap Carriage Road, ran up the Red trail to the top of Piper (+320m) , then continued south along the Piper ridge along the Green, then Yellow, trails. Dropped down to the lower north section of the ridge. Turned around where it started the final steep descent towards Camp Bell. Came back over the top of Piper (+200m), then took the Orange trail to the saddle with Belknap, down the White Trail to the Carriage Road and ran back down to the car.

Was looking for the landmarks for the AR control that Jon & Ben were going to man, but things weren't matching up with my recollection of Steve's directions...

Very breezy, winds out of the NW, so they were at my back going out and in my face coming back. Was carrying some extra dry stuff in my camelbak, just in case I got my self injured and got immobilized...
Not many clouds, views were terrific in all directions. Foliage is past peak, but there was still a lot of variety out there.

Friday Oct 26

Run (trails) 46:30 [3] ** 7.5 km (6:12 / km) +160m 5:36 / km
ahr:153 max:164 shoes: Falcon spikes 2007
Evening trail run at Gunstock. Wearing O studs rather than trail shoes to minimize the possibility of slipping on wet leaves.

Was going to check out the small spur trail at the south end that I think cuts up to the downhill slopes, or possibly back north, but it was too dark when I got out there.

AOWN - as I was heading back, heard a rustling off to one side. Judging by the size and lack of speed, I think it was a porcupine. Couldn't see to well and I wasn't inclined to head over and pat it to confirm my suspicions.

Tuesday Oct 23

Run intervals (trails) 28:15 [4] 4.23 km (6:41 / km) +65m 6:12 / km
shoes: Brooks
5 x 100 paces sprints at Ahern on the SE bike trail loop.

Had on my Brooks - great on roads and dry trails, but pretty lousy on leaf covered trails - corners were a little bit dicey, especially those on a reverse bank.

Sunday Oct 21

Orienteering race 1:49:20 [4] *** 9 km (12:09 / km) +303m 10:24 / km
spiked:14/19c shoes: Falcon spikes 2007
Blue course at NEOC's Powissett Peak Halloween-O. Lot's of what I remember as traditional Massachusetts terrain and vegetation.

Visibility was variable, and the underbrush was rather thick in many spots. Wore shorts and gaiters - would have been nice to have my knees covered...

1 good blowout - #4 (5+ minutes) and some more minor bobbles (5, 10, 18).

Blue - Splits

Saturday Oct 20

Run race (pavement) 26:03 [4] 5 km (5:13 / km) vdot: 36.5
shoes: Brooks
Project Extra 5 k race. Felt uninspired and never really got into a good pace or felt relaxed.

Got smoked by #2 son (24:30), but beat #4 son, 32 or so.

Really should do more road races. And be more consistent in my training - periodic speed work would be helpful.

Tuesday Oct 16

Run (pavement) 23:00 [3] 4.4 km (5:14 / km) +92m 4:44 / km
shoes: Brooks
Evening run through the neighborhood, not particularly inspired, but it was nice out, I made myself go out the door, and I fit it in between work, doing a little bit more on the construction and having to get dressed back up to present some grant awards for the education foundation I belong to. Always nice to give away a few grand for some worthwhile projects!

Sunday Oct 14

Orienteering race 56:47 [4] *** 5.27 km (10:46 / km) +190m 9:08 / km
spiked:13/17c shoes: Falcon spikes 2007
Red Course at Beaver Brook. Felt good in the woods, was pushing the pace pretty much the whole way.

Was very lucky a few times, could easily have had to bail out and lost a lot of time in a few areas.

FRWD GPS distance was 6.165 km with about 190 m climb.
Orienteering 1:03:00 [2] *** 2.57 km (24:29 / km) +45m 22:31 / km
7c shoes: Falcon spikes 2007
White course with sister Elaine, and Allison and Ethan (kids of my baby sister Carolyn) who came with Elaine. Had an absolutely wonderful time. Ethan can keep up a running commentary and Allie was great too. She can be prickly in a 8-year-old-girl-way occasionally.

Distance is from arm-mounted GPS unit. Don't remember advertised distance.

Red - Splits

Thursday Oct 11

Rowing 6:00 [2]
Hadn't tried this before, but had a bit left after the elliptical machine (well with only 20 minutes on it, I'd hope so!), and there was a rowing machine I'd been looking at the whole time, and there was no one else around so if I made a fool of myself, I'd be the only one to know, so I tried it.

Not too bad, if I focused on keeping my back straight (as the screen in front of me reminded me twice each minute) it felt OK, not too much effort on my legs, but adding in some arm work, which has been sorely lacking, given that ski season is coming up.

Really need to make one of those XC poling sliders in the basement to work on poling strength and endurance....

Wednesday Oct 10

Elliptical trnr 20:00 [2]
shoes: Brooks
different hotel - different elliptical machine - different muscles

same old sweat though, so accomplished what I needed to.

Monday Oct 8

Run hills (trails) 26:00 [4] 3 km (8:40 / km)
shoes: Gray Nike XCR
Up and over Cobble Mtn - 9:00 to the top from the car, +123m in 910 m. Should have warmed up a bit more.
Dropped of the tree clippers at the W end of the new trail.

From the multi-intersection, back up the right diagonal (another good hill +31m in 355 m) and approached the W end of the new section from above.

Upper Body (trail maintenance) 30:00 [1]
Cutting brush out of the new high section of trail - GNA has flagged it, but it hasn't been logged, etc. Assuming they are deferring it until next year.

Thought if I could clear it out a bit, suitable for snowshoeing, that it might be a possible route choice if I put a control up higher this winter.

Saturday Oct 6

Run (trails / woods) 1:00:00 [2] 6 km (10:00 / km)
shoes: Gray Nike XCR
Setting controls for the Scout Jamboree O course, pulling them at the end and some looking for wandering scouts before it got dark.

A good day at Gunstock with Pete & Lex. Not a lot of participants, mostly due to very lousy coordination at the scout council level. They put together a flyer with a map of where events were going to be, an neglected to put us on it.

Some selective sign placement by Pete, nudging the DJ to announce we existed and where to find us and good followup by a couple of scoutmasters resulted in about 16 groups going out on the White-Yellow level course.

Thursday Oct 4

Elliptical trnr 24:00 [2]
shoes: Brooks
Different style machine at different hotel than I normally stay at. Movement on this machine is rather different - I could feel the difference after a few minutes.

Note on following day - Definitely worked a different set of muscles than I'm used to. A bit sore and stiff.
