| About 8-10" of new fluffy white - super stuff. Most of the trails were groomed, to some degree. There were some squirrelly spots with extrabumps courtesy fo the groomer - should come out tonight when they go over it again, before tomorrow's promised 6-8" of additional stuff.
First time with flourinated wax - had been using my waxes from back in the dark ages, which are now referrerd to as hydrocarbon. Seemed to make quite a bit of difference - skis felt very quick.

| Gunstock - freshly groomed hard pack. Temps just below freezing, so it was just soft enough to hold an edge.
One spectacular wipe out at about 35 kph (speed per GPS arm unit went from 35 to 0 very quickly) - surface was a bit chunky and uneven, caught an inside edge and went sprawling right onto my chest, knocking the wind out of me. Was a group of novices coming down the hill behind me - was concerned about getting run over or one of them crashing into me. Was able to pick myself up, and get going before them got down to where I was - I think the wipeout spooked some of them, so they were taking it very slow... Other than that, a very pleasant day on the trails. Quite a few folks out.

| XC Ski (skating) 35:00 [2] 4.5 km (7:47 / km) +80m 7:09 / km | ||
| Evening ski in the snow. Stayed on new race trail complex. Weak headlamp (2 LEDs) but enough to see where I was going. | ||

| Pretty good conditions - did the high trails on Cobble Mtn. There were a few sections where the groomer had pulled up some dirt, but not to bad.
The downhills were great! Need to get educated on the new Swix waxes - got smoked by some of the GNA kids. I keep telling myself it's the wax, as opposed to I'm old and not in the shape I could be...
| Upper Body (Shoveling) 20:00 [1] | ||
| 90+ minutes shoveling snow off the flat roof sections.
2 feet on the new addition, about 1 foot on the old upper part. Was a lot of slush on the old section - don't think that's as well insulated.

| Went skiing aftrer shoveling off the roof - probably had the order backwards.
My arms were shot, but it was great anyways.

| Early evening ski at Gunstock with Tim. Nice, big fluffy snowflakes coming down at the beginning, but shifted to smaller, wetter flakes, then more of a drizzle.
Tim's first time on skis this year - made more difficult by headlamp and uneven surface. My headlamp kept turing itself off - need to check out the underlying reason. Batteries are fine, but it will just shut off, generally at the worst time - heading downhill fast with a sharp curve at the bottom, then pitch black...

| Arms warmed up nicely - still not a lot of power, but getting there. Was going to be a shorter outing, but each time I got back close to the center, thought how nice it would be to just another short loop. WIth the new trails, there are a lot of just another short loop options.
A few more thin spots developing, but the forecast is for another 1-3" of whiteness overnight. Wish I didn't have to go to RI early in the morning in it, but that's the way it goes. Will be just a day trip, so maybe I can get out on Tuesday for a short session.
| XC Ski (Backcountry) 1:08:00 [2] 6 km (11:20 / km) +170m 9:56 / km | ||
| Slowed the pace down with a nice backcountry ski, mostly on ungroomed trails and bushwhacking.
Figured out why they haven't groomed a couple of the trails - a tree down and several sections that are still open with open wetness. Not really flowing much, must be spring fed and staying just above freezing, so the snow melted. Would have thought the temps in the teens almost every night the past week should have taken care of that, but no such luck. Broke trail on the hiking path that takes off up the ridge towards the Pistol downhill trails. KIinda narrow and a few steep sections. Easier to handle going up than they would be going down though. Hmmm, narrow trails, sharp turns, rocks, stumps and deadfall hidden under the snow - perfect to really mess up skis, poles and body - gotta try it some day. Came out on Sidearm - the left most downhill trail looking up the hill. It had been groomed half-heartedly, but with no snow making on it, the cover was a bit thin. Worked my way down - the metal edges on the skis helped a lot - "normal" XC skis would have been more of a challenge.

| Snow getting a bit thin in a few spots, but overall rather nice still.
Arm strength is basically nonexistent. Working on technique - shorter strides with a quicker tempo is better for getting up hills, but the tempo seems to lengthen out and the strides get linger and I bog down as my arms collapse. Need to spend some time observing the GNA kids to see how they do it - recollections of doing that way back in Germany with Ron Pontius training near Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Was getting my butt kicked by 10 year olds back then, no reason things would change.
| Snowshoe (5200) 52:00 [2] 3.2 km (16:15 / km) +175m 12:46 / km | ||
| Alpine Ridge area of Gunstock. Started down by the ski jumps, and up the XC skli trails. Someone had run a sno-cat through there, but it wasn't groomed like the rest of the xc trails. Plenty nice for snowshoing though. Someone had been telemarking on the one nice section of old downhill trail that they've kept mowed.
Sno-cat hit most of the wider trails on the ridge earlier in the week, and someone had been out on snowshoes prior to the dusting we got yesterday. Broke track down one section. Glad I had ski poles with me to help maintain my balance. Was feeling rather wiped from the earlier skiing session - a face plant while wearing snowshoes would have been ratehr demoralizing. Some nice views - could see across the big lake to the Ossipee Mountains to the NE and Mt Major and the eastern Belknaps to the SE.

| First skating outing of the year, at Gunstock, by headlamp.
Nordic Center opened today, before the downhill area, which opens this weekend. Igor, the GNA coach, mus have been out for most of yesterday rolling trail. Checked out most of the new trail sections, in pretty decent shape. HIt rock/dirt only twice, and can tell a couple of places where they're going to have problems with icing from below due to poor drainage. GNA kids were jsuts wrappig up as I got there, so I had the trails to myself. Forgot how nice it can be to ski by headlamp, nice reflection of the snow, occasional flash if my hands get too much in front of me. Did a couple of face plants when I caught the inner edge of my ski and went down - nice when it's at night and there's no one around to witness the clumsiness... Could feel some muscles that have taken all summer off. Also coughing quite a bit from the cold I've been fighting for two weeks now.

| XC Ski (classic) 15:00 [2] | ||
| close to a foot of snow!!
After going out to shovel and snowblow a couple of times, decided I deserved a few minutes on skiis, even though it was after dark. Pulled out the back country skiis I picked up at the end of last season and set a short loop in the back yard. and went around on that several dozen times. Gunstock's web site says the XC center is open as of tomorrow - and the downhill slopes don't open until this weekend!! Not sure if that has ever happened before...

| Still getting over the cold I've had since Thanksgiving.
Jon and I decided we were going for a hike. Temps were in the low 20s, and there was a pretty stiff breeze. Decided to try Red HIll, up over Eagle Cliff. Parked by the east side of Squam Lake, and almost got bowled over getting out of the car. Headed up with the wind at our backs. A dusting of snow on top of a lot of oak leaves, and then ice flowing down over some rocks. Slipped a few times, and my face started freezing. Wind was howling as we got closer to the top of Eagle Cliff - nice views, but didn't spend a lot of time admiring it. Decided to cut things short and went down the Teedie trail and back to the car. Took 20 minutes with the heater on full blast to thaw out.
