Saturday May 31

Orienteering race 1:47:46 [3] **** 8.5 km (12:41 / km) +150m 11:39 / km
ahr:148 max:168 spiked:10/13c shoes: Falcon spikes 2007
Blue course at Sargent Camp, set by JJ. GPS distance traveled 10.6 km.
Wet woods, had been raining prior and had a few showers (or possible just wind knocking water off the leaves) off and on throughout.
#1 was mishung by about 85m, lost about 5 min there. Wore my contacts so I would be able to see, was concerned about water on my glasses. Need to get the prescription checked, my near vision eye is over-corrected, so it was fuzzy. Also, magnifier mounted on my thumb comass was of little value with the water on it. Woudl probably have been better off wearing glasses.
Wandered too far left of the line from 2-3, hit #9 on the way, resulting in about 30 m unneeded climb.
Completely blew #10, not paying attention to my compass crossing 200m+ bland area, wandered too far north, went around the north end of a marsh I thought I was going south of, but was able to make enough stuff fit, to include an attackpoint, that I was pretty flustered when the control and the boulder it was supposed to be on, weren't were I thought they should be.
After I recovered from that, fell and smacked my left knee pretty good going into # 12.

Elliptical trnr 24:00 [2]
shoes: Brooks
At the hotel - too much time on the road. Feel like I'm turning into a weekend warrior - nothing during the week and trying to cram it all into the weekends, along with grandkid time.

Monday May 26

Run long (Trail) 4:30:00 [3] ** 21 km (12:51 / km) +950m 10:29 / km
ahr:137 max:167 shoes: Inov-8 MudClaws
Trail run/walk. From the Bickford road trail head, up the fire road to the top, back and forth a couple time to find/confirm the dotted trail, then cut up to the Round Pond link. Looking for the next dotted trail to the top of Suncook Mtn but couldn't locate it. Finally bushwacked from the high point on the link trail up to the top and found the intermittent trail near the summit. Not much of a trail - figured out the best approach is to spot the old flagging pieces that looked to be a couple years old at least. Had to do some casting about when I lost the trail to find the next piece of flagging. Dropped down the SE side of the mtn to the cascade - a neat spot. Worked my way up it and followed a few sections of intermittent trail until it linked up with the Red Tr. From the SE corner of Round Pond, up to Mt Mack. Debated just cutting over to Klem, but got foolish and decided to hit Mt Anna, West Quarry Mtn, Rand Mtn, Mt Klem, back to te NE side of Round Pond. Was going to take the green trail down to the Grant Rd trailhead and run roads back tot he car, but realized I'd dropped my hat somewhere along the fire road and wanted to get it. So back along the Round Pond Link towards Belknap, cut across on the dotted trail and back down the fire road.

Was concerned that I might be running out of water, so was taking it easy on the last third. Was bonking pretty hard coing up Rand and Klem. Called Beth and gave her a progress report when I became apparent that I wasn't going to be back when I thought.

Sunday May 25

Canoeing 1:45:00 [2] 6.75 km (15:33 / km)
ahr:86 max:123
On Winnisquam, put in at Ahern, then south along the eastern shore. A lot of nice / large places along Shore Drive. Went about 3/4 of the way to the river inlet then cut over to the other side of the lake. Wind started picking up about then, so the return trip up the western shore and crossing back to Ahern was a bit more challenging.

Sunday May 18

Orienteering long 1:45:00 [2] *** 9 km (11:40 / km)
shoes: Falcon spikes 2007
Running the first part of the initial design of next year's Billygoat. Really liked a few control locations and legs, and some need serious reconsideration.
Had hoped for overcast and cool, but got warm (mid-60s) and sunny. Pretty constant breeze, so I wasn't overheating too much.

Had wanted to run though the entire course, but developed a blister on the outside of my right heel that was really bothering me, so cut off just before the halfway point and checked out the last few controls on the way back in.

Visibility was pretty good, except where it wasn't. Found quite a few patches of young pine growth - which will be a problem in the areas where the contours are subtle. Not much fun floundering around in this sort of stuff searching for a bingo control.

Kayaking 1:15:00
Had the kayak on top of the car and decided to check out the Soucook River in Loudon on the way home. Boat launch is just beside the Rt 106 bridge. Decided to head upstream. Checked out a couple of dead end oxbows.

Saw numerous turtles sunning themselves on logs. A lot of fish jumping, some appeared to be good sized. Wish I had my fishing pole along. Current was pretty slow for the first part. After about 30 minutes, started hitting some shallower sections with faster current.

Other wildlife seen - a few muskrats, two ducks who kept flying off upriver as I got too close to them, 2 deer carcasses floating in the water, snagged on something.

A calm peaceful day on the water. Working harder for much of the upstream sections, particularly as it got shallower and faster. 45 minutes up, 30 minutes back.

Saturday May 17

Kayaking 45:00 [1]
ahr:80 max:115
At Saltmarsh Pond in Gilford - feeding the bugs in the spots where there wasn't enought breeze to keep them moving past me.

Lots of good old boys out fishing, some with kids. One group had about a half-dozen good sized trout. Saw one turtle swimming just under the surface, when it spotted me it headed to the bottom and disappeared into the muck.

Tuesday May 13

Run tempo (trails) 31:00 [4] 4.5 km (6:53 / km) +80m 6:20 / km
ahr:150 max:163 shoes: Inov-8 MudClaws
Trail run at Ahern - about 1/3 on wider tracks and 2/3 on single track bike trails winding through the trees. Very pleasant light breeze, upper 60s. Was going to take it a bit easy, but found myself picking up the pace and decided to go with it.

AOWN - 1 woodchuck who I saw only because it was scurrying back to its hole, and 1 wood tick that I picked off my leg on the drive back home.

Sunday May 11

Hiking long 3:20:00 [1] ** 11.1 km (18:01 / km) +430m 15:06 / km
ahr:90 max:126 shoes: Merrill Hikers
Belknap range near Round Pond for Mark's 2d class scout requirement, with Tim, Elaine, Roger & Carolyn and Mark, Allison and Ethan.
Parked at Bickford Road trailhead, up the yellow trail, then the Round pnd ski trail. Mark, Roger, Tim & I did the Mt Klem - Mt Mack loop, then linked back up with the rest by the Pond and headed down.

Saturday May 10

Mtn Bike (pavement) 25:00 [3]
with two kids in the trailer behind me. Got in quite a workout - thank god for the extra gears.

Tuesday May 6

Run tempo (trails) 33:00 [4]
ahr:148 max:162 shoes: Inov-8 MudClaws
Run at Gunstock with Jon - trails muddy in a few places.
Saw a few patches of snow on the XC trails still - one was 10 m long and covered the trail side to side.
Intended this to be a slower run, but Jon was pushing the pace without seeming to know it. Not bad for a kid who hasn;t been running much.

Sunday May 4

Orienteering race (Classic Distance) 1:06:40 [4] **** 5.8 km (11:30 / km) +225m 9:38 / km
spiked:8/11c shoes: Inov-8 MudClaws
Another early start. Less wet (not really raining/drizzling), but still a lot of fog and moisture on the bushes.

Classic Green X - Splits

Early start - cool and damp. Great running weather. Never got lock on the GPS, so don't have the benefit of the track to see where I really screwed up.
Orienteering race (Sprint) 18:59 [5] **** 2.5 km (7:36 / km) +60m 6:47 / km
ahr:164 max:173 spiked:16/16c shoes: Inov-8 MudClaws
very fun sprint at Camp Natural Bridge
