| On Mt Rowe. In conjunction with some serious trail maintenance.

| Extensive clearing on the seldom used trails on Mt Rowe. Cut lots of saplings from the sides of a couple of sections, and removed a lot of sumac from some sections that were fairly open previously. Some of the sumac was up to 4" in diameter - glad I brought a saw to deal with it. Pushed most of the stuff off into the woods - was pretty much beat at the end of it.
Followed by about 30 minutes of blueberry harvesting - they're everywhere up there. |

| From Alpine Ridge parking lot up across Mt Rowe ridge, to summit of Gunstock and back down. Hurrying to get back for a noon meeting.
Moderately warm, but breeze up on top made it OK. Saw quite a few folks out there, surprising for a Friday - guess other folks are on vacation too.
Blueberries were out in full force - 3 people sitting in the middle of patches picking. DIdn't see any bears, but I bet they're loving it.

| Decided to head back up on Mt Rowe and harvest some blueberries. Had 2 1/2 yr old grandson Ryan along for company. Parked so I could get on the trail over halfway up the Mt Rowe ridge, but there were still some pretty steep pitches to get up, compounded by having a giggling kid on my shoulders. Giggling was in response to his latest trick - pull of his hat and toss it to the side of the trail. On cue, Gramps would stop pick it up and put it back up on his head. Start over again. When Gramps got smarter and didn't put the hat back on Ryan's head, Ryan grabbed Gramps hat and tossed it. A lot of giggling going on.
He did walk the less steep sections. Was actually a great help with berrypicking also. Figured out very quickly that blue ones are good and the green ones get left on the bushes. Took quite a while for him to get bored with that, but there was plenty of other stuff to do while keeping Gramps in sight.
Guess I wore him out, he fell asleep in the car seat on the short ride home.. |

| Broke camp a day early from Dry River, as the forecast for Thursday was for torrential rain and it's a bitch breaking camp in the rain. Had been planning on donig some fishing, but everyone else decided to do the hike up to Arethusa Falls at Paul's urging, so I tagged along.
Many impressive waterfalls along the way up Bemis Brook, and Arethusa Falls at 200 feet was awesome with the high water.

| Up to the second crossing on the trail, then lot's of bouncing around on the rocks as I fished first up the river to the middle of the S curve, then down to the secret hole.

| First full day of fishing. Up the trail to the bridge, then fished down to just above the S curves. With the water so high, wasn't able to get across to continue downstream, so headed back up to the trail and headed down to about the second crossing. Raining intermittently most of the day, but it was fairly warm, so no repeats of past years when I remember shivering on the river, and having a hard time getting worms onto the hook because of cold fingers.
Ran into Bup and James, said they'd found a moose skeleton just above the bridge, so went to take a look at it. An impressive sight, even with the bones scattered around a bit. Whatever critters had been at it had done a good job of tearing it apart- the back bone was pretty much together, the skull was off a ways and the legs were off in different directions. Didn't see the antlers, wuld have liked to have brought one of those back.

 | Run intervals (trails) 7:40 [5] 1.8 km (4:16 / km) | |
| ahr:150 max:166 shoes: Inov-8 MudClaws |
| Intervals on the narrow bike trails - 75-80 paces, about 50 - 55 seconds each with about 2 minute recovery between.
Trying to keep the leg turnover rate up, which was harder on the downhills than the uphills. |
 | Run warm up/down 26:00 [1] 2.4 km (10:50 / km) +40m 10:00 / km | |
| shoes: Inov-8 MudClaws |
| Warmup and cool-down and recovery between intervals.
Bugs not too bad. Think there were a few FDFs out, but not overly persistent.
Mosquitoes found me on the walk back up from the beach to the car. |

 | Kayaking 2:10:00 6.5 mi (20:00 / mi) | |

| Kayaking on the Merrimack in East Concord. Put in just upstream from the I-93 crossing, off W. Portsmouth St. Upstream almost to Sewalls Falls, workign pretty hard on the last piece, where there was some pretty fast water and a bit of almost rapids.
Trip back downstream was into the wind with some pretty good chop. Got splashed a bit. Surprising number of folks out on the river for a Sunday morning, some fishing, some kayaking / canoeing. A pretty large group looked like they camped out on the island just below Sewalls Falls.
AOWN - numerous ducks, a couple of herons

 | Run tempo 40:00 [3] 6.1 km (6:33 / km) +130m 5:56 / km | |

| Trail run at Gunstock. No work yet on cutting new trails. Too bad, I'd like to get them mapped and create a profile before ski season starts up again.
AOWN - several red efts and a big honking porcupine. |
Wednesday Jul 9 |
 | Run (treadmill) 24:00 [2] | |
| shoes: Brooks |
| Got on the treadmill at the hotel - work out some frustration over work. Lots of challenges and turmoil, minimal guidance, etc. |
Tuesday Jul 8 |
 | Walking 20:00 [1] | |
| |
| Pushing the reel mower back and forth for a while in the back yard.
Between finishing roofing the porch at my son's place, which I spent 12 hours on on Saturday, and finishing up the gutter installation on the back of my place, did find time to go out and do anything more energetic.
Would feel sluggish, but I'm too damned tired. |
Monday Jul 7 |
 | Canoeing 25:00 [2] | |
| |
| On Winnisquam with my nephew and 2 year old grandson. Ryan's first time out in a canoe and he did quite well. Sat pretty still on the cushion I put in the middle and held onto the thwart just on front of him. Didn't seem to be too nervous.
Was a bit of a breeze, which made the 85 degrees and high humidity tolerable, but the lake was a bit choppy.
Had a few minutes afterwards to cool off and play around at the beach. |
Sunday Jul 6 |
 | Walking 1:00:00 [1] | |
| |
| Walking around with Ryan and Jen at Squam Lakes Science center. Had Jon along to help with crowd control. Beht was going to come, butwas feeling under the weather.
Had a good time. Made it to the up close and personal session on the beaver, which both of them seemed to think was pretty neat. Came back an hour later for the peregrine falcon, but they were getting tired and it wasn't quite as neat, so we moved on quickly. |
Friday Jul 4 |
 | Kayaking 1:10:00 | |
| |
| Hawkins Pond in the western corner of Center Harbor, north of Meredith and south of Holderness.
Nice little place, had it almost to myself - one guy out fishing and a couple of loons having a good time freaking me out with their eerie calls.
